Menards is a home improvement store chain that is centered in the Midwest. They compete with both the Home Depot and Lowe's and in many ways do it better. Their stores are huge, their selection is vast, and I have usually found store staff to be friendly and helpful. And I'm usually in town when they have their 15% off paper bag sale. Back here in Northern California, I wish I could go here instead of Home Depot (or Dumpo as Handyman Rick calls it). But I will drive all the way out to Antioch to go to Lowe's. A few years ago and back in the golden days of free airline baggage checks (unfortunately in this area, the closest Southwest Airport is Omaha), I came to the Spencer Menards to look at lighting fixtures and other home improvement items. I found the selection much to my liking and bought a "few" things that required me borrowing an extra suitcase from my folks. And I would do it again! Maybe that's why Gayle tries her best to steer me away from here when we come to town every summer for our Bogenrieff glass fix. read more

My husband and I ordered and paid cash for a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher and microwave These were to be delivered on a specified day. As the delivery day approached, we heard nothing from them. I called them and was told that they didn't have it down for a delivery but the was order complete. They scheduled a new delivery date and asked if I wanted it in the early morning or afternoon. I chose early morning. When the delivery date arrived, I called them and they said the truck left 45 minutes ago, and it should be there soon. They showed up at 4:30 pm! Without the refrigerator. I called them about my missing refrigerator, and I was told it had not shown up yet. Two days after, I get a call from Menards and they told me my refrigerator had been sitting there on the display floor they put it out there days before my partial order was delivered. When I told them I don't want it now that they put my refrigerator on display, she changed her story and told me ooh no, it was just sitting in the back, out of the box! Very bad customer service! It started from the very beginning when we walked in the door and had the guy write up our order and he didn't even do that right. Very disappointed, and I will definitely be taking all of my shopping needs elsewhere!!!! read more

EDIT: I'm updating my review as it isn't fair to leave my 2 star review based on one bad experience from a few years ago. Menards is Menards, it's the only big box home store in our area. It's the only place to find many such things and in that respect it's rather convenient. It's always busy, and your mileage will vary from employee to employee, but most are friendly and helpful. Surprisingly, my favorite thing to buy there is TGIF potato skin chips! ORIGINAL REVIEW: Menards is pretty much the only game in town for your Home Depot / Lowes home improvement type collection of goods. And in that regard, they have a good selection of items. I am glad we have them in Northwest Iowa if the alternative is nothing at all.... But they sure do not make it a pleasant shopping experience the majority of the time, which is unfortunate. I went there twice over this Labor Day weekend, as I needed a few items for some home electrical repairs. Only one employee I encountered was helpful, a woman who works in the lighting section. Aside from her, I said "Hello" as I crossed paths with two other employees - both of them completely ignored me and kept on walking even though they looked right at me and made eye contact (though they quickly averted their gaze and kept on walking.) At the check out lane, the customer ahead of me decided he had something in his basket that he didn't want to buy. So, he simply threw it in the goods at the sides of the check out isle. It fell down in between boxes of garbage bags and a stack of paper plates. He looked at it and shrugged, obviously not caring that the item was hidden down there. After he bought his goods and left, I moved up to the cashier and told the young woman what I saw just so someone would know that the item was down in there. But you know what? She acted like she didn't give a damn either. After all this, I felt like I was invisible and that no one inside this building gives a damn about anything anymore. Now, granted, it is a holiday weekend and the store was busy. Maybe the employees were disgruntled that they had to work a holiday weekend, I don't know. But I've heard other people make comments over the last couple years about how they hate going into Menards... And I'm starting to really see why. Honestly, if I didn't need those particular items right away, I would have had a far more pleasant shopping experience just ordering them online and having them shipped to my home. Shopping there actually makes me wish they had better competition around here, rather than make me feel like rooting for them. Frankly, that's just sad. read more

Most of the time when we seek out help we get; friendly, knowledgeable and courteous employees, there have been a few exceptions. Since most of my experiences are of the national big box stores like this, I think I like Menard's better. Seems friendlier, but some of their return policies take getting use to especially when an employee provides something wrong and we get a gift card instead of cash we originally paid. read more

I think it is a huge mistake to move all the lumber outside just so you can sell groceries inside. In addition to moving the lumber/contractors desk to the back of the store. This store is awful since they remodeled. I now drive to Sioux City (an extra 50 miles) to avoid this store... i read more

Super lousy in store service, and even worse (zero stars) online service. Menards.com customer service hides behind their online "contact us" feature. You cannot get in touch with anyone at all for help. They won't admit their mistake in botching an online order. Their system will default to shipping to your billing address if you have a different shipping address from your billing address. Absolutely expect your product to ship to your billing address. I've had this happen twice, and they will not own the fact that their online system defaults to the billing address for everything. (And they make you pay to then have your product shipped to the address they should have shipped it to in the first place). Menards is weak when it comes to product quality, and their prices are higher than their competitors for the same products. My recommendation: DON'T shop at Menards, go to Home Depot, Lowe's or Fleet Farm. read more

Menards is a fantastic store with most everything you need. The thing that kills it for me is the poor customer service. It almost seems like the workers avoid you, so that they dont have to answer something they dont know! Great store that rivals Lowes and Home Depot except in customer service! Wow! This place is like Lowe's and Home Depot had a kid and it took steroids. We didn't have anything like this in Texas. Bring your roller skates as the store is massive. We've heard this is a small one. Would love to see what Sioux Falls has. read more

Our last three visits to the Menards store in Spencer have been the worst customer service experience I have ever had. First visit we could not find any one to assist us in getting an area rug out of the bin. We asked for help and the lady said she would find someone and we waited for about 15 minutes and no one showed up. So we went and shopped other things. We went back after we found a person to help and he said nothing and got the rug out of the bin and put it on the floor and said we needed a cart to take it to the front. He did not find a cart.....we did. Finally today we went back to pick up a special order that we received an email that it was in the Spencer store. So we drove to Spencer only to find out they could not locate it. Maybe there should be some better customer service training for the employees that work there. For another 20 miles we can go to Sioux City instead and have a choice of THREE stores instead of Menards!! read more

I special ordered my fence and all the supplies. I got a call it was all in and went to pick it up and they had given some of my items to someone else that came to get fencing before I got there that day. So I had to wait for them to order in more. Then yesterday when checking out the cashier turned on her light and rang her bell twice because no one was coming to help carry out. A blonde haired lady came over and in front of customers said if you ring that more than once I'm going to take it away. I don't care if that's the rule or not don't make her feel bad in front of a line full of customers. I felt so bad for her. read more

They may have all you need,but you better think twice if you get the big card.We sent the amount due in full on time and they claimed it was late and before you know it they are harassing us on the phone for their money...Not spending another dime there til they get that HSBC off our back. They said it was two days late, and they charged a 35.00 late fee. So, lets say it was two days late, is 35.00 even fair? Well with interest, it is now up to over 300.00...again...for nothing.
