Normandy Oaks Park is nature sanctuary inside the urban Royal Oak…read more Inside the park, there is wide paved path loop (around 1 mile) great for walking, running, biking, and skating. Along the path were plenty of wildflowers, which made for the perfect nature walk. However, I prefer to walk in the evenings since there aren't many shaded areas along the path. Lots of green infrastructure is embedded into this park like bioswales, an underground drainage system, and a retention pond to help manage stormwater. These naturally attract lots of wildlife. During my walks, I've seen turtles, frogs, ducks, and deer. To top it all off, Normandy Oaks Park has plenty of areas for play like a fenced in splash pad, soccer fields, and climbing play structure. The splash pad is open from 9 am - 9 pm Memorial Day to Labor Day. A bonus for parents: There are plenty of picnic tables and pavilion with a drinking fountain and restrooms near by. I can't wait to come back soon!

The turf around the picnic shelter & splash pad is OK, the soccer fields started out good but are now disaster due to lack of maintenance. The rest of the mowed grass areas are very poor. The rest of the park they basically just stopped mowing the golf course. I was expecting a large elaborate playlot but didn't get one. One of the smallest playlots in the city. At the bottom of the sled hill is a tree which in good sledding conditions would be close enough for kids to hit. It should be removed.

The playground could use some updating. Signs everywhere prohibiting large groups or picnics which is strange for a park. The girls were verbally attacked by an elderly man for having the puppy with them. I've never been a dog owner and the girls missed a sign when they entered the park so they were shocked when the man ran up to them screaming, "What is wrong with you? Why would you bring a dog in here? Are you stupid? Can you not read the sign?!" The girls and the puppy were shocked, scared and confused; they told the man they hadn't seen a sign and were leaving but he kept screaming at them that he was going to call the police and have them ticketed and arrested for breaking the law. I'm absolutely disgusted this would happen, for two girls to be verbally attacked and insulted over an honest mistake is sickening. Back in my day a simple "excuse me young ladies but there is a sign out front stating dogs are not permitted" would have sufficed.

If you want a pretty outdoor area to enjoy during your lunch, this is perfect! There are plenty of tables, and a small, short, path to walk along the river. I will note that I didn't notice any public restrooms in the area. If you are looking to hike trails, and feel like you escaped from the city into nature, this is not the place. It does have a couple spots with a beautiful view, but paths/sidewalks mostly lead you around the local neighborhood and business area. The graffiti tunnel is disappointing. Honestly, I feel like the city is missing out on a great opportunity to utilize the tunnel, it could help encourage community engagement with local artists, or maybe an art contest. Give the city the chance to re-design it in a yearly competition. It could even be specifically targeted for graffiti artists, if preferred. As of now though, it's just a bunch of ugly scribbles and insults written on the walls of the tunnel. I will say overall that the park was well kept and clean. You can find an available bike repair station, if you need it while passing through, and there is a really nice drop off for kayaks and canoes. The parking lot is small, but the park is tiny, so it works. There is a second small lot, just West of the park, that you can park in when using the drop off point. Overall, it's a pretty, small, city park. Great for a quick sit, but not for an adventure.
