Our guide knew the area well and welcomed questions about what we saw. We walked the easy White Oaks Loop path, with lots to see and learn about. We learned how to identify a tree by its leaves or bark and whether it is shade-tolerant or intolerant. We observed Eastern Hemlocks, White Oak, Tulip Poplar, Pitch Pine, Black Gum, mushrooms, and even sassafras.

There are walking and hiking trails everywhere and the crown jewel of course is the mansion, the view, and the gardens. There are activities year round including music festivals, tours of the mansion, and you can even rent out the mansion or just rooms. There's truly something for everyone. I wish there was a small store in the education center that offered drinks, coffee, and snacks, but there is the general store at the bottom of the hill that offers sandwiches, take-out meals, and beverages so hit up Kings Gap General Store before heading up to the mansion. We're so fortunate to have this park so close to us and if it's not my favorite state park, it's in the top five at least.

The softball fields are usually in good condition and well maintained, which makes a big difference when you're playing regularly. One thing everyone notices right away is how windy it can get--it's probably one of the windiest places around--but you kind of get used to it. Besides sports, it's a great place for families. There are playgrounds for kids, plenty of open space, and lots of spots that are perfect for picnics or just hanging out. I've also walked my dogs there many times, and one thing I really like is that the park is big enough to keep distance if your dogs aren't super friendly with others. They also have a large dog park with separate areas for small and big dogs, which is really nice. There's water available for the dogs, and I've seen a lot of people bring their pets there to play. The park also has fountains for both people and dogs, as well as porta potties, which makes it convenient if you're staying for a while. Overall, Norlo Park is a great local spot whether you're there for sports, walking your dog, or just spending time outside with family.

There are three separate playgrounds, one of which is built for toddlers and younger kids. Another playground is conveniently located between two pavilions. Both pavilions have grills available to cookout. The third playground is closer to the cloverleaf area (see paragraph below). There are over two miles of paved walking/running trails throughout the park. Most of which is fairly level, for Pennsylvania anyways. There are a several brand spanking new softball fields, four of which are grouped in one area. To me they resemble a four leaf clover. I didn't use the dog area, but from what I could tell, there were two fenced areas. You must keep your dog on a leash outside of these areas for sure. During summer Saturday afternoons there are train rides for kids (and adults). The impressive train goes in a loop on site. The current hours are from one to four, so you have three hour window to work with there. I think I saw soccer field, horseshoe pits, sand volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts as well. A large barn and community building rental can be utilized for weddings, parties, and such. With so much to do nearby it is work looking into.

If you're there during peak times on a Saturday the amount of children/ tweens and parents there can feel a bit overwhelming. So I would advise trying to avoid peak times on a Saturday. Sundays seem a little more calm. There are so many cool features at this playground your child will definitely have fun and wear themselves out! There's also a waterway/ creek that has ducks in it frequently and what appears to be a path/walkway/ walking trail. This park has everything you need for a day or afternoon at the park!

The park offers 10 miles of hiking trails. I walked the Nature Trail and the adjoining Quarry Trail, and found them very peaceful. The trails were shady, with burbling creeks and lush ferns aplenty. I saw several turtles in the pond. I also saw a plant that I believe was ginseng (see photos). I encountered only one other person on my walk. According to the Strawberry Hill Web site, all of the main trails were once used for logging a tree farm that occupied part of the property. In the 1850s, the pond on the property provided water for a saw mill located on the Swamp Creek/Middle Creek juncture. Strawberry Hill offers many public programs, including summer camps, naturalist classes, nature walks, and geocaching events. In February and March, you can learn how to make maple syrup in the maple sugaring classes. They also host events such as the Twisted Turkey Trail Tussle race (10 K, 10 mile, and 1 mile).

It is a 205-foot-long (62 m), Town lattice truss bridge, constructed in 1849. It uses no arches or exterior supports and was considered strong enough to support a bridge up to 200 feet in length. It was less costly to build than traditional arch supported bridges. It crosses Conococheague Creek. In 1973 the bridge was rehabilitated after being carried downstream by flood waters during Hurricane Agnes. Steel bracing was added at a later date to stabilize the bridge. In spite of being altered over the years due to destruction and restoration it remains a good example of this type of covered bridge design and contains approximately two-thirds of its original timbers. The bridge is only open to pedestrian traffic and is located at the end of a curvy road down to the creek. There is a small area for parking nearby. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. [Review 15581 overall - 571 in Pennsylvania - 1085 of 2021.]
