Wonderful small tourist town at the tip of connecting Lower and Upper Michigan. It truly is…read morebeautiful up here, regardless of the season, though it is madhouse of tourists mostly between April and October, with June-September being heavily crowded.
Even if you hate crowds and touristy things, no Michigander should ever say they've never enjoyed the Mackinaw area. It's a shame. If you hate tourist season, come up just after in the fall or in early spring, before the height of the tourism starts up. A lot of the more tourist friendly shops and some of the hotels are closed in the winter, but other places are still open year-round, for the hunters, snowmobile lovers and other winter sports enthusiasts.
This is a friendly, very small town community. Even though I'm sure they probably get sick of tourists, they never act like it. Tourism is the way of life up here and the local community seems to know it. If anything, they seem to go out of their way to give directions to lost souls and nod hello on the street as they walk by.
Year around, there is always plenty to do up here. The village has two nice parks, a marina, playgrounds, plenty of locales for a photo opp, decent restaurants, gift shop the fort museum, Ice Breaker Museum, ferries to the island, hotels in every price range, miniature golf, a goldmine of ice cream, taffy and fudge, bike rentals, an incredibly long beachfront, access to the Great Lakes, the local lighthouse, and mighty close views of the Mighty Mac.
Since the tourism season is officially between Memorial Day and Labor Day, rates on most every hotel and motel up here drops substantially during the off-season. Fall color change is a really good time to come up here. It's less crowded, less expensive and the weather is usually still good, if a bit chilly.
I think an annual trek up here is an obligation to myself. It's almost a home away from home. A lot of Michiganders feel that way, too.
