When we first walked into Rock Paper Scissors, the initial expressions and reaction from Yolanda Lusnia and Bree Pickens immediately made my mom and me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We arrived excited and trusting that my mom would be taken care of, but the first impression left us feeling out of place. During the appointment, I noticed a lack of warmth, communication, and attention to detail that you would expect from a professional salon experience. At the shampoo bowl, Yolanda did not adjust my mom's chair, speak with her, or ask basic comfort questions such as whether the water temperature was comfortable or if she preferred it warmer or cooler. Those small gestures are part of making a client feel cared for, and their absence was noticeable. About 10 minutes into the appointment, Bree did come over and kindly asked if I wanted to sit in the same room as my mom. I appreciated that gesture. However, when Bree walked me back, Yolanda said she was going to ask me the same thing. After the initial interaction, the change in tone felt uncomfortable and confusing. While my mom was at the shampoo bowl, I overheard that there was no way her hair could be blown out without straightening it. I clarified that we had booked a blowout, not a straightening service. After the service was completed, her hair was still very frizzy and did not look like a finished blowout. When I politely expressed my concerns about the result, Yolanda raised her voice and said, "I'm not used to doing this type of hair." That comment was extremely disappointing and made my mom feel singled out because of her natural hair texture. My mom has had successful blowouts at other salons, and the issue was not only the final result. It was the overall experience and the way she felt as a client. I reached out to Katie Enfield privately because I wanted to resolve this respectfully before posting publicly. I have been to several stylists over the years who never mentioned any potential treatments for the thin hair. I made an appointment at Dolce Vita Salon for a color correction and met Kimberly. We talked about my thinning hair, and what my dream hair would look like. She was honest with me about the condition of my hair and what my options were. Kimberly recommended that we first evaluate and treat the scalp, and then suggested the idea of using a "topper" on my head, real hair styled in the way that I want, that would give the appearance of full and healthy hair while my own scalp heals. This seemed like such a reasonable idea, and basic, that I was surprised that nobody had ever mentioned this at other salons. Kimberly showed me examples of toppers to get me comfortable with the idea. She also made me feel like she was a friend who was collaborating with me more than someone who was just hired to work on my hair. We went ahead and ordered the topper. While we waited for it to arrive, Kimberly was in touch the entire time, sending e-mails with photos of hair toppers that would be realistic for my head. At her salon on October 7, it was time for the fitting. This being real hair, Kimberly had first shampooed and styled the topper, and then cut and curled it to fit my face. She showed me how to attach the topper to my head with clips that work with my bio hair, and then she let me try doing it myself. (I am still practicing in front of the mirror and getting more confident). I love the way the topper looks and fits, as does my husband, Alex. I went in wanting to replicate the sun-kissed strawberry blonde with copper undertones that I got here last year. The consultation felt super rushed, but she acted like she totally remembered and had it handled, so I trusted her and didn't think I needed to pull out a reference photo. When she was done, she gave me a sleek blowout that looked great in the salon chair and completely hid the actual color placement. Once I washed it at home and saw it air-dried in normal indoor lighting, it was a totally different story. The color is way darker and redder than my natural base shade, and there's a heavy, solid block of copper right at the top & one side of my head with no blending. Four days later, I messaged her with an inspiration picture to politely figure out a fix. Her response was honestly pretty rude and defensive. She told me she had "0 recollection" of my hair from last year, and instead of offering to brighten it back up to what I actually paid for, she basically said it would cost me another full fee for a brand-new partial color. She did offer a quick root smudge at the sink, but putting a dark gloss over an already muddy, dark base would have just made it look worse. When I reached out to the salon owner to ask for a partial refund so I could go get this fixed somewhere else, she completely washed her hands of it. She said the stylists are just independent contractors and she's basically just their landlord, so the salon takes zero responsibility for their work or client payments. If you are going to charge premium luxury prices, you should provide a proper consultation and some basic professional accountability when a mistake like this happens. I am now stuck with a botched hair color. I definitely won't be back.

I scheduled an appointment with the owner, Colleen, for my mother, who was interested in getting a perm and having her gray covered. While I was away on a trip, my mother--who is living with dementia--unexpectedly colored her own hair using boxed color from Walmart, something she has done for many years. When I returned, I realized what had happened and that she had an appointment scheduled that same day. A couple of hours before the appointment, I did what I felt was the responsible thing: I contacted Colleen to be completely transparent about the situation. My mother's biggest concern was not wanting to damage her hair, and I simply wanted to get the professional opinion of the stylist before moving forward with a perm and additional color. Unfortunately, Colleen's response was extremely aggressive and defensive. She immediately spoke to me as though my mother had already missed her appointment and implied that we weren't going to show. I explained that her appointment wasn't until 1:45 and that it was only noon--that was precisely why I was calling ahead of time to discuss the situation. I also explained that my mother has dementia and that I was simply trying to make sure we handled her hair safely and appropriately. Rather than approaching the situation with understanding or professionalism, I felt as though I was being reprimanded and spoken to aggressively. At one point, I had to tell her directly that I did not appreciate being spoken to in that manner. She eventually said, essentially, "Why don't you come in and I'll let you know," but by that point the interaction had completely changed my perception of the business. I no longer felt comfortable entrusting my mother's hair care to someone who responded this way to a reasonable question from a family member trying to advocate for her. As a business owner, the first interaction with a potential client matters. I believe professionalism, patience, and empathy--especially when a client has disclosed that a loved one is struggling with dementia--should be fundamental to good customer service. I ultimately chose not to keep the appointment. I'm honestly grateful I reached out beforehand because it gave me the opportunity to see how the situation would be handled before putting my mother in that environment. Even before I talk about the color I want to lift up that a) they use tech really well (I'm on Zoom calls from one end of the day to the other so picking up the phone and calling someone is super difficult for me most days). They responded to my inquiry through Yelp immediately, forwarded my request on to their stylists, and I had an appointment set up within a half hour max. Ended up with Stephanie and she was wonderful! While she was putting the color in I noticed she didn't apply any protective gel or vaseline ahead of time to protect my skin from the dye. I just figured, "Well, I'm not going to see anyone today, if I'm walking around with a dye headband, it's fine." Well, she didn't NEED to put anything on my skin to protect it because she's that good at what she does! The color came out great -- very natural and healthy looking, and really shiny. And not one drop of dye anywhere except for on the roots where it belonged. On top of all this, Stephanie was super nice, as was everyone who worked there. After the best head massage/shampoo I've ever had, he gave me an excellent haircut that really moves. Now, I'm not a hair flipper, but I've been doing it all morning!
