We visited The Stepping Stones restaurant during a week's family holiday in Cornwall and what a…read morewonderful experience. The restaurant is cosy and stylish with lots of attention to detail. Not your bog standard cafe with ugly plastic or metal chairs, but beautiful solid wood furniture even the drinking glasses are gorgeous! We ordered a variety of different meals there were four of us the first day. I have special dietary needs and nothing was too much trouble. The food was all home cooked to order and came out piping hot and well presented. Two of us had the roast dinner and even as a vegetarian I could see that my partner's beef was perfectly cooked. We were even offered extra vegetables and roast potatoes that doesn't happen very often!! The beef lasagne that my 12 year old step-daughter had was very well received and she commented on how fresh it was, especially compared to a lasagne she'd had a couple of days before in a cafe up the road which was dried up and flavourless in comparison. My 16 year old step son had a lovely home made beef burger which he was very impressed with. The desserts are also a big winner with a lovely selection of sponge puddings, cakes, pies and tarts all offered with clotted cream, custard or ice cream. We enjoyed our meal immensely, the staff were friendly and attentive and happy to cater for all our needs. A few days later on our last day we went back for another meal before returning to our home town of Plymouth and again we were not disappointed a couple of us chose from the '£7 for 2 courses' lunch menu and were impressed by the choices. My fussy 5 year old son joined us all this time and loved the home made Plum Tart with custard he chose for dessert. Having spent a lot of time in Cornwall over the years and having experienced a lot of pretty mediocre meals I can honestly say The Stepping Stones is excellent value for money and the standard of cooking and the quality of ingredients used is far superior to many other local restaurants. We will definitely be returning for more in the future. In fact we were so impressed we have thought about planning a day trip to Perranporth in the future just so we can visit The Stepping Stones again! To give a balanced review, I have been scratching my head, trying to think of any negatives to add but quite simply cannot think of any. I could say it's a pity the premises is not a little bigger to accommodate more diners but I guess this would make the dining experience less cosy and personal just make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment!

The stuff is friendly, however slow when comes to cleaning the tables (getting the stuff delivered to the table doesn't mean the dishes left but the previous customers will disappear). The reason, I suspect, is that the café is part of a local Christian centre and that all people working there are volunteers, so probably customer service is of secondary importance. Nevertheless, they serve decent, inexpensive food (pancakes, paninis, burgers, jacket potatoes, salads gluten free options available) along with smoothies, shakes, and flavoured coffees each served with gingerbread cookie. With only one ripping-off internet café in town it's good to know that with every meal over £2,75 you can surt internet for free here (otherwise 5p per minute).

Apart from lovely scones with famous Rodda clothed cream and jam, the place offers salads, wraps, sandwiches cupcakes and selection of alcoholic beverages. And if you feel a need to but a souvenir to a member of family and you don't know what to choose, the place also sells selection of ciders brewed locally, packed in nice boxes. I'd give 5 starts, however the bliss was disturbed by a waitress having a private conversation about condoms with another member of the stuff, not to mention her flip flops, dress so short that we almost could see her knickers and bra strips lurking from beneath. I wouldn't mind if it was a beach bar, but from place of this class, I'd expect a bit more of taste.

Fab, fab, fab!…read more Rustic but modern decor, right on the front at St Ives. Even on a rain lashed Friday, it was cosy and welcoming. We couldn't get a table right away but staff ushered us in so we could wait for our table and shelter from the rain. Food options look lovely - the menu board was so tempting and appeared to be very Cornish in flavour by combining options composed of lovely local produce. I came for the proper Cornish cream tea - even gluten free and it comes with authentic Cornish tea (tea made in Cornwall) - yummy! Seriously, a great place. I found it on google after searching for gluten free in St Ives and it was amazing. They cater for 'normal' people, but most of the menu can be catered for in gluten free form - breads, cakes, scones, quiches, pastry products which I was so impressed by. The menu is marked G which shows the GF options available. Makes a change from the one or two options - usually soup or salad... The scone was to die for - two scones actually in a cream tea with clotted cream and jam and a pot of tea - £5.95 but well worth it. The scones were the best GF ones I've come across and my mum, although not a huge scone fan, raved about her non-GF ones all day! I even had an extra scone - purely to use up my left over jam and cream of course as it was so great. The jam was lovely - clearly local and home made and definitely not from a supermarket jar - I could have ate buckets of it with my scone it was so good. If I'm in Cornwall again, I would definitely make the trip to St Ives to check out The Tea Room - there was so much on the menu I would have had, if I wasn't maximising the cream tea opportunity. Staff were friendly and helpful and certainly not judgemental about the GF girl and the three scones... :-)
