I dined here several times (at least six) and tasted a variety of dishes, however I somehow never got around to writing a review of this restaurant. As an overall impression - every dish that I tasted, tastes the same, no matter what they say is in it. It seems that they put the same spices and veggies in every dish. I had several beef, chicken, noodle and soup dishes and none were good, let alone great. Some beef dishes were passable, most of rice dishes (like fried rice) are bland and under seasoned and all noodles taste the same. All that said, I am yet to find an above average asian restaurant in Vienna. The service in this particular restaurant is extremely slow - every single time - and they can't bring out all of the dishes at the same time, so certain items can arrive 15 minutes after the initial ones. read more

Very nice Chinese restaurant that I highly recommend... Simply because it is not your everyday Chinese quick service joint, it is family owned, the father in the kitchen, the mother and daughter busing. Get the English menu and indulge in reading the culinary experience behind the dish. I enjoyed it and made me crave my dish even more. Flavorful delicious dishes. My favorite was the Szechuan duck... The duck is first boiled for 2-3 hours, then smoked over tea leaves then lightly deep fried. Served with dumpling bread, plum based thick sauce and green onions. Service is a bit slow, otherwise five stars but definitely will hit the spot if you are craving Chinese food. read more

Excuse my language, but all the brilliant reviews must be written in a satirical manner, right? It is at least hard to understand that they aren't. But I didn't only see positive feedback on Yelp, before I went myself. Interestingly, I was also convinced by a friend that this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in town - and imagine - it is in our neighbourhood. If only I at least hadn't selected a wedding anniversary day to go and test it! When I saw that the ambience reminds of the one of a half-abandoned railway station restaurant somewhere in the middle of nowhere, at first I thought that can only mean that it is one of those places where the food is so good that you simply don't mind how it is served. Guess what - it is not. There were two waitresses, the good and the bad one. The bad one literally rolled her eyes when I asked a simple question about what exactly is in a certain dish. Even if my question showed that I am not such a connoisseur of Chinese cuisine, fine - I can still be given a polite answer. The other waitress was either the owner or just the good one - I had the impression that she was stepping in every now and then to make up for the rudeness of the younger colleague. The food was partly OK, which means that my "Teigtaschen" were quite tasty. However, I did not have a strong impression that they are extremely home-made. Maybe this was even more so because some sort of Chinese curry that we also had was according to both of us stuffed with glutamate like no tomorrow. The sort of food where you hate yourself for eating it later on when you have already stuffed yourself with it because you were hungry and could't think straight. Maybe we simply selected the wrong day. A (tiny) part of me wants to give this place another chance, for all the great reviews here. Maybe when the strong memory of glutamate fades aways a bit, though I doubt it. REAL Szechuan cuisine. Spicy, flavorful, spicy, fresh, spicy, simple. Did I mention spicy? It's for sure worth the trek out to the 19th district; went with a few friends of mine who are from Singapore. This seems to be one of the only Chinese restaurants they will go to. Great beef and chicken dishes, and also tofu. Highly recommend the house tofu (ohne Fleisch) and also the garlic Pak choi. read more

Without any doubt one of the best chinese restaurant in Vienna. If not the best! Well, if you are looking for a taste of real Chinese cuisine of course! They have a really complete menu, with starters (such as spring rolls and (wonderful) Dim Sum) and main dishes with meat/ fish / sea foods / vegetables/noodles and rice... and delicious sauces. Thumbs up for the Sichuan one... Good luck for choosing! It isn't particularly cheap but the quality of the food is definitely worth it. And they have a cheaper lunch menu with starter + a main dish with a looooot of choice too! Just be warned: like I said, it's real Chinese cuisine, not adapted for tourists and the spicy dishes really are spicy ;) The staff is quiet but friendly and you won't wait long for your plate to arrive. If the weather is nice enough, don't hesitate sitting outside, it will make it all even better! I came here under the recommendations of a colleague of mine, who has been eating here regularly (several times a month!) for years and hasn't been disappointed once. I haven't been either and would definately come back more often if it wasn't that far from my home! read more

Probably the only Chinese restaurant in Vienna that actually serves Chinese food instead of the usual europeanized chop-suey stuff.

Meister Xiao specializes in Sichuan cuisine, and serves the most authentic Chinese food we have found in Vienna (my husband is native Chinese so is in a good position to judge such things....I just judge tastiness). Unlike other "spicy" food we have ordered in Vienna, this really was spicy. We are still on the quest for authentic Hangzhou cuizine -- so far, the best in that category is (oddly enough) in the Wals countryside near Salzburg, sadly a 3+ hour drive from us. But I digress. Back to Meister Xiao, based on online and waitstaff recommendations, we had the Thousand Flavors Chicken appetizer, the classic Ma Po Tufu dish (so that we could compare Meister Xiao's to the dozens of other Chinese restaurants we've tried), a spicy beef and onion dish the name of which escapes me, and a couple on non-spicy dishes for our toddler, including the cucumber garlic salad appetizer. All were delicious. We had a very early dinner and so had the place to ourselves (that way we don't disrupt other diners with our small children). It is located on a cute corner and has outdoor seating. The restaurant itself is also tastefully decorated. We noted with interest that they serve Chinese Hot Pot, basically Chinese fondue where you cook your own ingredients in a choice of either a spicy or non-spicay broth. Great and fun for big groups and for cold winter days (today of which was not...a toasty 92 degrees farenheit). It's moderately priced, and overall, we had a great dining experience and plan to go back. read more
