Welcome to the 40-watt hotel. Where you can check out anytime you like, but you can't find the door…read moreto ever leave. So last weekend I stayed in Wortley Hall hotel the night before a wedding. Unfortunately though the group were in great spirits there were a large number of things that just made this place unbearable. Firstly the decor: The hotel section especially is in dire need of a full redecoration. Peeling wallpaper, smelly communal spaces and tatty carpets were found throughout. In fact the only place which seemed to have been looked after was our room, however despite the competently hung wallpaper there were still a few crucially lacking features, most importantly a safe (which we were told there would be for the wedding rings, meaning keeping them in someone else's room overnight). The bathroom was a bizarre mess, simultaneously clean and dirty. The cheap lino stuck to our feet getting out of the laughably small showers with it's semi-functional door. It is only fair to say that the house-keeping had done a good job and everything was as immaculate as they could make it, so it's not laziness, just dilapidation and incompetence. Secondly the house-staff: While one of the bar staff and the breakfast staff were very nice and pleasant they struggle to make up for the remaining staff. Upon arrival we were just stared at blankly during check-in (not even a hello), during our evening in the bar the staff were slow and rude, one girl especially had a habit of announcing the prices while thrusting her hand over the bar and not making eye contact. "Five Ninety!" *thrust and look away bored*. Thirdly the smell: I can't comprehend exactly what is going on here but throughout the night we encountered a large variety of very unwelcome smells in the hotel. From a faint whiff of bowel movement in the corridors, to a mixture of urine and bleach in the bar, to a rather unfortunate vomit odour in one of the breakfast rooms. I can't tell if this is a product of recent nights of the long encrusted truth of what happens at your average Wortley Hall bash, but it was unpleasant to say the least. Lastly, the fixtures and fittings: This all culminates in the most bizarre feedback I could ever give to a hotel. The overwhelming impression that the entire building was appointed for the dwarves from Lord of the Rings. "What kind of a comment is that!?" I hear you ask. Well what else am I to think when all the mirrors are at a height of 4'6" and all the light bulbs are so dim I think they actually produced darkness? This decision to make all the rooms the Gimli suite may we be deliberate ("It was deliberate!") but that doesn't make it any less a bad idea. Also, I though I did know Dwarves were natural sprinters, I didn't know that they didn't like condiments with their breakfasts. Not a jot of brown sauce, a dollop of ketchup, or heaven forbid a little piccalilli was on offer. Better get some beanjuice while you're up! The most saving of graces here are the grounds. Lovely, well kept and well described. I would only add this, go see them before someone sets up a bouncy castle or a sumo ring in them, which appears to be a daily occurrence around 11:30.

I recently went to a 60th here for my Grandad. We went in during the day to set up our decorations…read morelike balloons and things and everyone was fairly helpful. They weren't exactly bending over backwards to help us but they were there and they let us move chairs around and things like that. My grandmother had paid the low sum to hire out the room (to the left as you walk in) plus a buffet spread and she had booked her own DJ. The party space had tables and chairs enough for 60-70 people, more than we actually needed - it was an intimate affair - and a stage for the DJ to play from plus a "dance floor" with the private bar to the right. There were also private toilets for our party, The main social club is to the right and its a fairly nice drinking place but is not really anything out of the ordinary.

The rooms are slightly large if not a bit out dated but can fit a large number of people in. There is a fully stocked bar and it is really cheap as well for drinks. Also if you book a room for a party you can also order a buffet as well so all your guests have food. It is not much but a good idea. I would say that if you decide to hold a party here, you should book well in advance as places like these go fast!

Stayed at this hotel for business last week. 2 night stay. Gym is dated but I was happy I had a…read moreplace to work out!. Room was rather nice considering it is a business hotel. Look forward to my next business stay here. Breakfast wasn't amazing but had some item selection. I'm a vegetarian so the dinner menu could include some more healthy options as I don't fancy eating pizza or curry on a regular basis. Food was a bit bland. Staff were helpful. Room was clean.

Holiday inn is one of the hotel Chains that I personally trust ... But I found this one a bit below…read morethe expectation. It is a listed building with old and worn out rooms. My daughter's first impression of the place was that she started crying, because she thought it's a haunted house ha ha The hotel has a big parking space, it's even bigger than the hotel itself and while it has secret code to get out of the parking, the have a handful number of signs with disclaimer 'Your car is your responsibility dude' :P The rooms smells 'old and dusty as I said and it triggered my Sinuses right away. However, our room has a pretty new bathroom. and I thought for a second that I'm gonna sleep in the bathtub that night. Our breakfast was included with the room charge so, I think the hotel restaurant was pretty good (breakfast), with a nice buffet with very good service by friendly waiters.

If you've not visited the New Sportsman Bar, Pitt Street Low Vally yet, you have missed a treat…read more Newly refurbished, it's amazing, Fantastic bar, function room, and the best outside area to the rear, which is safe for children as it is fully secure. Lawned beer garden, toddler area, it's an amazing hidden gem. This was the worst pub in the area and now is without a doubt the best in my opinion. Call in and have a look for yourself. Independently run free house with a great selection of beers lagers over 50 gins Feaver Tree tonics, great wine selection, and food coming in the next few weeks or so. Plus the famous Belgian Blue beer by Bradfield Brewery whilst stocks last, I'm told!

This is a very versatile venue with seating which pulls out/pushes back, a cinema screen, hard…read moredance floor, bar and large lobby area. There are also offices incorporated into the building. Would make an ideal wedding venue and I've been to a fair few birthday parties here which have gone without a hitch. Also available for live music which my friends have been to see and recommended highly.
