Grand Tea and Imports

Lower East Side

Grand Tea and Imports is a fantastic place to find special teas from China. They have several…read morepu-erh teas from young to vintage aged; black teas, some of which I cannot get enough of; green teas I usually do not drink, because I over steep them; and Oolong teas which fit nicely between the black and green teas and one I cannot get enough of. There is so much more than tea available in this crowded shop. I only avail myself of the tea, but the family proprietors have always been most helpful, engaging and educational regarding the teas and even the cultural events, such as the Chinese New Year. It's a challenge in a shop that can be very busy at times and crowded in the narrow aisles with product nearby and patrons trying to squeeze by each other without knocking anything over. Somehow, I don't mind all this and it adds charm to the shop. Some of the teas are rare finds and especially with the vintage Pu-erh teas. I still have one Pu-erh tea from 1993! It's drinking so smoothly and no sugar or honey is required. I have been there several times over the past seven years or so and they remember me now. The tea does not come cheaply, but this is quality tea, vintage tea, and unique teas you will not find everywhere, sourced by the family from China through their own acquisitions. Authentic, and you will not forget the experience and taste. 4.3 stars!

You can't go anymore old school CTOWN than this store. Was a cold day but grandma was out in the…read morefront of the store beckoning customers to come in and try some oolong tea. I walked in and was greeted by the over abundance of Chinese products packed on every shelf. I had a flashback in the 80s at a Filene's Basement with a dizzying array of STUFF. Folks here spoke toisanese but understood my Cantonese and I'm sure can speak English. I honed in at the many different big jars of teas and winded up asking one of the owners where the bik lo chun was. I had him weigh two ounces for me to take home and try. $20 later (loose leaf and none of that chopped/grinded up tea crap from Twinings or Bigelow -- i excited and grandma waited outside to comp me a lil bag of oolong for my journey. Service with a smile and a warm heart. We need to support more of these lil mom and pop before they go.

I went in here the other day and was mesmerized by the array of statues and religious paraphernalia…read morethey have here. "C'mon, let's go," said my friend Jon. But I had lost my St. Dymphna medal the previous day. Yes, they had a display card with little aluminum saint medals. They also had a sterling silver St. Dymphna for $9.00, which isn't too bad. (St. Dymphna is the patron saint of the mentally ill.) The aluminum were only a dollar. "Make that one--no, two," I said. What struck me most when we first walked in were the "holy goalie" statues--all sorts of plaster and resin saints standing in arches. Fabulous Finds will be worth getting back to; oh, and my other reflection was that Catholicism is the most pagan religion of them all. Graven images, my foot.

Fabulous Finds is one of my favorite spots for vintage shopping, in all of Pennsylvania! I live in…read moreNY, but make sure to stop by here when I am on a thrifting trip through PA. This isn't a place to come for large items or furniture, but their selection of smaller items is fantastic. Every time I've been in, I've found lots of great items at low prices, compared to what they would go for online or in bigger cities. I especially like mid-century kitchen items, glassware, and decor, which I've always found plenty of. The owner and all of the staff that I've every met are friendly and helpful. Just know that they are cash only, so come prepared to buy lots of treasures!
