This review is for Dr. Carlson and Functional Medicine Care at MediCenter: After seven years of care at the VA (conventional medicine) my conditions continued to worsen to the point that I was close to being an invalid. Then I started seeing Dr. Carlson through VA Choice and in just a little over a year my conditions are in complete reversal and I am on the road to optimal health. I believe Dr. Carlson to be the best doctor on the Kenai peninsula because he is an MD and also a Functional Medicine Practitioner. Functional medicine differs from conventional medicine in that it seeks to find the root cause of the illness/disease rather than just treating symptoms with pharmaceutical drugs. Extraordinary healing requires an exceptional doctor as well as an exceptional patient. The reason being is that functional medicine asks more of the patient than conventional medicine does. In functional medicine the patient and the doctor become a health team and work together to find the actual cause (root cause) of the ailment with the goal to be complete healing and not just symptom suppression. Functional medicine asks more of the patient but the rewards are root cause healing and optimal health. If you are a good patient and truly seek optimal health than choose Functional Medicine. Dr. Carlson is the Asclepius of our area and heals those in need of healing who are willing to put in the work it takes to be healthy. I was an RN and worked in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) so I have experience with conventional medicine as well as functional medicine and I choose functional medicine and optimal health. Integrative Medicine and Pain Management at Kenai Medicenter Dr's Carlson and Trescot saved me from a lifetime of insufferable pain and mental torture. I have been very sick for over a decade, and although recently diagnosed with MS, for years had difficulty finding doctors who would take these odd and often unexplainable symptoms seriously. They did. They did not give up, and despite the lack of ability of specialists to diagnose me for over a decade, they were able to discover ways to determine the best protocols to relieve and reduce symptoms and get me off almost all of the insane amounts of medication that I was on previously. At the Integrative Medicine and Pain Management programs at Kenai Medicenter, the staff are very caring, serious, and community minded. They very much want to help those who cannot find the help they should have already have received. Integrative medicine is not a simple process, a just take an aspirin and call in the morning thing, nor does one size or one prescription fit all...its as much about the process as it is about the results. The approach calls for the doctor to take time to actually listen to the patients, and we are a part of coming up with the best way to get to the bottom of our health issues, including knowledge of how our environment, our food, and lifestyle impact us. These doctors really care about their patients. So, I don't like to admit that they can be late to appointments in that section of Medicenter, but it certainly happens. It is 100% absolutely worth it, knowing that you have a doctor who specializes in YOU and knows what he or she is doing. If whomever reads this has a health problem that has gone unresolved through the traditional western medicine system, if you feel that you are over medicated and nothing else is working, give the Pain Management and Integrative Medicine programs at Kenai Medicenter a shot. It DOES work. Warning: It only works when I fully do what the doctor recommends, though. The treatment plan adjusts over time, but it allows me to have a life with MS instead of MS running me. read more

The medical professionals are great, but the billing department has been a nightmare. When I ask for a cost ahead of time, they tell me they can only give an estimate, which is due immediately, and if they decide they want more they will send me a surprise bill in the mail for the rest. The most notable incident was a visit many years ago, which I paid for in full at the time of service. Years later, they said there had been an error and I owed much more. When I called and asked about it, they said I could pay in full or do a payment plan. Since it was over 7 years old and they couldn't send it to collections (and I already paid the original charge), I did neither. I came in for a more recent visit and my insurance ended up paying for more than they had estimated. So I overpaid my co-pay. Instead of mailing me a refund check for the difference, like an honest company, they sent me a statement crediting it to my ancient balance. This trickery was the latest scheme to collect on an illegitimate bill. It's still better, faster, and cheaper than the E.R. if you need it, but there are other urgent care providers with more transparent billing. read more

I came in as a new patient in May in a lot of pain. Your staff was kind, courteous, attentive and listened to my concerns. The staff set up a plan for helping improve my health and at my check up I had seen vast improvement and felt that Leah truly cared about me. If you need urgent care or female care, you need to get with Leah and Dr. Carlson. I have been blown away with the level of care and how in-depth care they provide. I don't get quality care on the Kenai with any other group but I do get it from The MediCenter. I stand by these doctors and you should also.
