If I could put 0, I would. Mecca is the ABSOLUTE WORST rental company in Bowling Green (and probably in all of NW Ohio), and I have been renting for years. They do not care about their residents. I have rented two properties from them- both had TONS of black mold that was covered up by vinyl or mats. They did not allow me to tour one of the apartments beforehand, and when I reach out with concerns, they give attitude and are rude. I have an ESA, and even after turning in all required paperwork, they somehow LOST IT then tried charging me almost $1,000 for having my ESA. Do not rent from Mecca, you will regret it. They care about money and nothing else. I can honestly say I have never experienced anything positive with them. The photos below are of mold when I moved in. The fact that you guys want a 600 or higher credit check is wild! The fact that you guys want people to make three times the rent is wild because jobs don't pay like that no more and that's when you guys don't understand. You guys don't consider other people's feelings and you don't consider the amount of people struggling to find a place to call home for either those with kids or those who just weren't peace. This review will primarily be for the women who are considering renting from this company. Do not rent from any rooming houses. You will be crammed into a small living space where you have to share a tiny kitchen, where people have to squeeze past each other, and share one bathroom. As a female, you will have to live with men whom you do not know. And there are plenty of creeps who elect to live in this type of environment because they're excited at the prospect of living around females. I had terrible experiences where I was retaliated against by a male tenant who worked at the university because I did not give him any of my free time or attention. I had to call the cops to come over because of his threatening behavior. I had let management know, and they did absolutely nothing. If you still choose to live in a rooming house, I recommend getting a body cam and a hidden camera scanner since you are forced to use the same bathroom as the men, and they can easily place hidden cameras anywhere. If you are lucky enough to have a female roommate or live on your own, I recommend still purchasing a body cam to wear when the maintenance guys are on the property. There was only one decent maintenance worker who was polite enough and was on his own. The others work in groups of two or more, and they are extremely aggressive and rude. One was inappropriate when they banged on my door and made inappropriate remarks about how I looked. You need to have a legal aide at your disposal when dealing with this company. They will change the rules around and not notify you. They also attempted to charge me utilities after the new lease was signed, and as a rooming house accommodation, utilities were never charged before. I had to contact an attorney and get that straightened out. Just don't rent from them, especially if you are a woman. They care nothing for the safety or well-being of the tenants. You would be charged more reasonable rates and live in a safer environment if you rented a room from an older female on Craigslist. read more

Properties rather poorly maintained. Leases not convenient for students, especially summer students. State they need the weeks between lease end and start to clean, yet the renter has to clean and even get carpets clean. Both apartments my daughter moved into were dirty and she had to have maintenance called out numerous times to make them habitable. Everything is just band-aided and not actually repaired or replaced. The move-in checklist is what they use as inspection. Not sure what the management company does. Only will accepts carpet cleaning receipts from the companies they have worked out deals with. Daughter had to argue that they damage to the property was there on move-in day when they deducted it from her damage deposit in spite of the move in checklist. Suggestion is to keep a copy ( screenshots) and pictures. No exceptions to anything and there email system often fails. Unfortunately few other options available. Don't treat the tenants as young adults. read more

I would never recommend MECCA Management for rental property. Extreme greed motivates this company and they expect their renters to fund everything right down to normal maintenance. They raise the rent consistently and have fees for everything. The majority of staff is rude and unprofessional. Good probability you won't get deposit back and will probably owe more in the end, even charge you for electric after you no longer have possession and turn in the keys. Worst mm Management company in BG based on experience. Stay clear if them is my recommendation! read more

Not very understandable. The rent is very expensive. The person who works in the main office in the complex is there only in the mornings. She only communicate the tenants by text message and email. I missed a lot the older administration because they seem to care more about people than this one. read more

Mecca have been, by far, the best landlords I've had while living in Bowling Green. Maintenance responds to issues quickly, the crew in the office are super helpful and they even went above and beyond to help my boyfriend and I move into our neighbors larger place after she moved out, ending our (at the time) current lease early with no penalty. And they were fair in what they took out of our deposit! Whenever friends ask who to go to I always, always, always suggest Mecca. read more

Application for the BG Estates denied. My income exceeded the limit of $30,000 Apparently $18,000 is greater than $30,000 They vehemently told me I made too much. They ignored all evidence I provided that proved the opposite. I gave more paystubs to show how my paycheck may fluctuate on occasion. I provided my 2019 tax returns. I provided the oldest pay stubs I could find to prove my employment hasn't changed. I kept shoveling documents their way, but I have doubts they bothered to look at any of them. My recent paychecks were MUCH higher than usual and unbeknownst to me, they were going to use those rare occasions to estimate my entire annual income. They inflated it. (I made $18,000 last year). They refused to listen. They ignored emails. They hung up or transferred me to someone else on the phone. And they kept trying to gaslight me in telling me I made to much. It's my tax returns. They're my pay stubs. I know damn well I don't make too much. When I say they, I mean mostly Lisa and whoever she deals with when it comes to the BG Estates. I'm looking at the other reviews on google and yelp and clearly their reputation precedes itself. Hi Lisa and company. Something tells me my next application you will have a harder time denying. For anyone who wants to see the photo of the rejection letter next to a screenshot of my 2019 tax returns... Go to the Google Map reviews. Then you tell me if I'm too rich for the BG Estates. Also I tried to leave a review on their Facebook page multiple times, on different devices. I kept getting an error message. I'm sure that explains the 4.1/5 rating. Horrible management company. Our apartment had not been cleaned and was disgusting when we tried to move in. They gave us a hassle about having cleaners come out and fix the issue, which was Mecca's fault in the first place. Terrible communication. Would have work done on the buildings and give very short notice to move your car, or have it towed. Ridiculously high security deposit, and they are known for finding any tiny issue to keep as much of your money as possible. The leasing agent we interacted with was rude and inconsiderate every time I spoke with her (Sharon). The unit was nice and fairly priced, but overall terrible experience with the people that run it. read more

I rented from them for a few years and it was a mixed bag. I loved the location of my apartment and it had good character as a unit in a converted house. They were also really understanding when I had to move out with most of a year left on my lease (signing in October for a July-July lease is annoying, especially if you're not a student and your life isn't that predictable). They finally set up an online payment system recently, which is nice and means you don't have to mess around with actual checks anymore. But Maintenance was slow to respond to requests and it often took me calling to check up for anything to happen. They also fixed things as quickly and cheaply as possible (example: my towel rod fell out because there was almost no drywall left behind it -we're talking golf ball sized hole- after having so many holes drilled in the same spot, I requested they fix it and they put yet another hole in the same area, so after a week it fell out again). They refused to provide a reference to my next management company, so I had to provide proof that I had paid regularly myself. When I moved out I hired professional cleaners and had the carpets steamed, as per the lease, but they still took a lot of charges out of my deposit. Don't expect to get your deposit back and you'll probably be fine. read more

Terrible customer service. Management does not care about the tenants at all. If you choose to rent from them: 1. Some of the apartment complexes have old washer/dryers that cost MORE then the laundromat in town. They do not clean your clothes very well either. you might as well go to a laundromat to save money and actually have fresh clothes. 2. the regularly raise the rates because they control so much of the property in town. 3. expect them to take a week to respond to your maintenance requests. and expect management to be rude. I graduated and moved home recently, it was a rushed effort since I was pregnant and for my mental health i was just ready to leave. The apartment needed cleaning like most apartments would, it was just me and my dog n cat because of the carpet I didn't expect to get any money back. I paid 300 in a pet deposit and 440 in rent. I get a bill in the mail saying I owe them 95 dollars. Of course they charged me stuff like 20 to clean the toilet and 25 to clean the mirror and sink and 30 for the tub and so on for the fridge and other things. They charged me 85 to clean the carpet. Added up to go over the deposit. Which is ridiculous but okay. Didn't expect to get money back but I definitely don't own you a dime. So I called because they had me down as only paying 375 in deposit which is a lie, but since they just bought the property in I wanna say 2017 and I've been there since 2014 I've patient and compliant. She gets back to me today and tells me that I did have a pet deposit but it got used up because the replaced the carpets because they couldn't get the smell out after cleaning it. I told her I figured because I leased the apartment from someone else and they were trash when I moved in but why would you bill me for cleaning if you replaced the carpet (well because we tried to clean it first)... okay so I gave you a total of 740 in deposits and your telling me it's al gone because of cleaning and carpet replacement? She goes "would you rather pay for that or the cleaning fee" and I'm like I would rather y'all charge a deposit that is accurate with the possible damages, she told me their deposit are like 325. But it's 700 to replace carpet???? That would mean that tenant would owe no matter what. And if the cleaning fees for my little one bed room exceeded 440 what the heck is 325? My friend left from her apartment and unlike me she cleaned it, never smoked, don't have any pets and they charged her for a door that was missing that was never there, to clean the carpet for smoke smells when she didn't smoke and to clean stuff that she scrubbed down, she did better job than their cleaning ladies! And they still charged her, so with that being said whether you clean or don't clean they will still find something because they don't wanna lose the deposits, they Nickle and dime you for everything to the point that you don't get anything back. Other than that they will work with you on rent and be patient but it depends on who you talk to. I told them once I was waiting on my school check to pay rent up and they were fine with it didn't say a peep and then when I was late one time and told them I was waiting they told me "they have to treat every tenant the same so no one says anything about discrimination" I never had a problem with maintenance because I never broke anything or needed anything fixed and I never had a rude person besides their main office guy that hung up on me. Take this review as you will but I would avoid them because your deposit will never be enough to cover the "cleaning and damages". My dog is a 10lb Scottie terrier mix. I invested in a carpet cleaner to make sure he didn't mess the carpet up too bad, but like I said it was damaged before hand I just didn't care because it's a college town and al those apartments are crappy honestly . The old owners were a lot better, Mecca is just money hungry. I asked them if I could pay my rent up and leave early or buy out my lease they said Mecca don't do lease buy outs I said can you see if the next tenant wants to move in early she said she don't talk to the tenants like that. But y'all was blowing up my phone to show him the apartment? And get him to sign the lease. Also when they took over, and this is my fault for not paying attention. I moved into my place in October and was on a 12 month lease which means it should be up next October, when Mecca took over everyone resigned leases early apparently mine got switched to a school year lease? Because they don't do year leases is what she told me ? Because all of your tenants are students? Just watch out. Because you'll come out owing them and they will have every excuse in the book as to why you get charged what you do, and their list for cleaning is so extensive but they will re clean and charge you anyway. I'm not saying they owe me money, but I definitely don't owe them a dime. read more

Bowling Green Estates used utilities in my apartment while it was still in my name, without my consent. I had moved out of my apartment in April 2018, of course knowing I would still be responsible for rent and utilities until my lease ended or it was re-rented to some one else. The utility bills stayed pretty consistent from April to June (very low, because nobody was living there). My lease was scheduled to end July 31st, 2018. On June 18th, 2018 I handed Lisa Bricker (who was in charge of Bowling Green Estates) the keys to my apartment. She had told me that many people want to move in to these apartments, so the sooner I could get out of my apartment, the sooner somebody else could get in. This would then end my lease and I would not be responsible for July's rent. So on June 18th, I cleaned my apartment very well and gave Lisa the keys, thus making it impossible for me to enter the apartment any longer. On July 26th, I received the electric bill for the apartment. The bill was for $100. I thought something must have been wrong so I called the electric company and they explained the usage to me. On June 18th(the day I gave Lisa the apartment keys) the kilowatt usage was 4 - which was normal, this was from me cleaning. Then on June 19th the kilowatt usage jumped up to 22. From then on, the kilowatt usage stayed around 21-24. The lady at the electric company suggested somebody had turned on all of the lights and left them on, or turned on the air very high. I called Lisa Bricker and asked why this happened. I explained that it did not seem fair to use utilities in an apartment that somebody else was responsible for paying, especially not informing them that they would be using those utilities. She informed me that I am still responsible for paying the electric bill. I was very much aware that I would be responsible for paying the utilities, for that was agreed upon. I assumed the bill would remain the same as the previous months, for nobody was in the apartment. But for Mecca Management to use utilities in the apartment I was responsible for paying - without telling me....is wrong. I emailed Lisa a few times, expressing my concern for this predicament, but her only response was that I would still have to pay the electric bill. read more

Mecca is ok but steer clear of CARRIE, the water and utility bill combined are over $250.00 per month which is preposterous for an apartment, however, my biggest complaint is that for the 2 years that I have lived in a mecca apartment any time that I had a concern or question I spoke with CARRIE and she has never once been courteous or well-mannered. Every time I have spoken with her she has been condescending and extremely rude, I understand that it's a difficult job but she can state things in a friendly manner without demeaning the tenant. She is a bully and it is not a one time experience, it is any time you have to speak to CARRIE she is beyond unpleasant and insulting. read more

I Do NOT reccommend rental an apartment throgh Mecca in Bowling Green Ohio. They walked into my sons apartment while he was sleeping without any notice, because an Ex girlfriend reported to them that she thought someone was living there with him! When directly asking them why they just came in the front door without notice they stated that there was a water break in the basement (which was crap I called the water deptment to verify and there was no leak or break their. In their next breath they asked if someone was living there with him EXCUSE me??? You just walked in his apartment without notice while he was asleep to ask him that! Shame on you Mecca for trying to take advantage of a young man whom is current on his rent and is a quite and kind neighbor! I cannot wait for his lease to end and get out of there! read more

At first it all seemed fine. Then I had to deal with the maintenance guys and like Elliot said, CARRIE is a total B****. The water heater broke and there was water all over the floor downstairs, CARRIE told me they would get there when they can, the maintenance guys were busy, I told her fine, there is water going everywhere, I am not responsible for the water damage. She cocked an attitude with me and said FINE they will get someone out soon. Hour later, they arrive, replaced a fitting and left. Second time I've dealt with CARRIE, I lost my house key (my fault obviously) and asked if I could get a replacement, she told me 100$ and the locksmith would be out "sometime" that day. I waited all day, no locksmith. Called Mecca the next day, nothing was noted of locksmith. I tried AGAIN to get a spare key a month or so later when I had time off, again no locksmith showed. I've been using the garage door opener for the past couple years to get inside the apartment. Another issue I have with this property management is the water bill comes in the mail and is a torn off piece of paper like it was attached to a larger piece, but you don't see your whole bill. Two people live in my apartment (including myself) and we're using hundreds of dollars of water a month, something fishy. We finally found a house to move into and was told by the office we need to be out by the first, which is fine. I took my vacation days and planned on it, we received a piece of mail saying we need to be out the 31st by NOON. Which is NOT what she said when I called them to let them know we won't be continuing our lease. Overall, the price for these apartments and the headaches you go through are not worth it. Also get rid of Carrie, she doesn't do well with people and it looks poor on your company. read more
