I play this course yearly when visiting family. Let me tell you, golfers in this area don't know…read morehow lucky they are to have it. If it was near me, I'd be out there everyday. This is a challenging course, and not one for beginners. Because of the elevation changes, it's easy to misjudge distance, so bring a range finder. Greens are not lightning fast like many desert courses (there are cactus out here). On one hole, you're so close to a Wendy's that you can walk over and get a Frosty while others in your group tee off. Heritage Hills is a gem and must-play if in the area.

It's an hour north of where I grew up in northwest Kansas and is an easy drive and an excellent test of golf skill. Growing up in high school, they used to have a $10 greens fee for students on weekdays and I'm actually not sure if they still have that, but even if it's more than $10, it's definitely still worth it. This golf course is definitely not for beginners. There are huge slope changes and many blind shots. There are also a bunch of bunkers, lots of tall native grass, extremely undulating greens and the course has a little bit of length. It gets extremely difficult playing in the wind, and in SW Nebraska it blows pretty hard 320+ days of the year. I came up to Nebraska for the annual John Mullen Memorial Pro-Am Tournament. It's an extremely well run event, and always raises between $15,000-20,000 for the foundation which is really awesome considering the small town. The pro's get paid well if you play well so it attracts many good players who want to play a great golf course and have a chance at some good money (winner gets paid $2200 on a $150 entry fee) Anyway, the golf course is fantastic. The reason it doesn't get 5 stars from me is because the greens aren't as fast and demanding as they used to be. It was a cool and wet spring so the grass hasn't filled in as well as usual so they couldn't chop down the greens, but they used to be really really difficult, and the harder; the better!!! Now it seems you really have to "hit" the ball instead of just being able to stroke it and get it started down your line. I saw a lot of good putts that should be fast, that were hit on a good line, and the grass slowed them down and they missed low and short. If they could speed them back up, this course is a 5 star experience.
