In essence a touch of gold is like tan zone but it is better decorated and this is the only discernible difference I can find. I am hardly an expert on these types of places but the prices seem to be extortionate and the young crowd who enter here are being duped into becoming something that they needn't. The staff here seem to be very fond of their own reflection and spend more time looking into mirrors than actually serving customers so I wouldn't say much for the personal touch here to be perfectly honest. On the whole very little difference between here and Tan Zone so if you're part of the tangerine army then take your pick but you may find a friendlier welcome at Tan Zone.

They offer a wide range of other treatments including massage, eyebrow re shaping and tinting and also full body packages at a wide range of prices. I'm pretty sure you can mix and match and create bespoke packages after a consultation so that you cover your every need in terms of vanity! They're ideally located and seem to be very busy. A shower is available before and/or after the massage according to your preference. (I take my own oil.) I go for one hour Thai Massage which is £35, the going rate for this part of the world, and I would say a real bargain!

I booked myself in here many years ago with the director, assuming that I'd get a professional hairdo and it would be worth the money. How wrong could I be. I turned up in the morning to find my intended stylist hungover and feeling like death, threatening to vomit over my head at any moment. She got through the colour consultation ok, although I had a vague feeling she wasn't really paying attention, and, like you sometimes sense with hairdressers, they've got their own ideas about what they're going to do to your hair. As the foils were prepared and the dye mixed, her friend came in and was promptly sat next to me so they could relive every moment of the previous night and discuss in minute detail the most insignificant things. It was at this point I felt like asking her to hand over the dye and let me do it myself. However, I persevered, and after a while my colour was on and I was left in relative peace with some magazines. After my hair was washed, I started to wonder what colour she'd actually dyed it. I said nothing though, and watched as this green she-devil hacked chunks of my hair off, so the bits that actually looked highlighted were now no more than tufts. Once she had blowdried it, she staggered back, looking impressed with herself, and explaining how the three different colours really stood out in the light. I could only gaze in disbelief. She had dyed it exactly the same colour as my own hair. I'm never good in these situations and thought maybe I was a bit biased because she was making such a show of feeling rough. I ended up leaving the shop with a bag of products and a bill of around £100 (bearing in mind this was more than 6 years ago). The first friend I saw didn't notice the colour was different, neither did the 5th, 10th or my mum. So I ended up going back and asking for it to be re-done. Originally I went to the Bold Street shop as I explained I didn't want that woman near my head again, but the camp guy behind the desk told me it was a lovely colour (I know - I was born with it!) and if I had a problem I had to go back to her. When I plucked up the courage to face her again, she agreed to re-do my colour for me, and then proceeded to dye the sample strip (your fringe, crown and parting) blonde. I didn't go back again.

As I've been going here for year the staff recognise me and are very friendly when I enter the salon. The stylist I use will often shout hello and tell me she wont be long. When she's ready she takes my coat and any shopping bags I inevitably have with me, and takes me over to a chair. She then takes time to discuss what I want, look at photos and make suggestions if necessary. The trainee washes your hair for the stylist. This is usually really nice as they give you a head massage and use shampoos and conditioners which smell divine. They then take you back to the chair and offer you a selection of drinks - lager, red wine, white wine, tea, coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate and mineral water. They also bring over some magazines if you want them. The stylist always takes her time to ensure she knows what I want and then carries out the cut expertly whilst chatting to me. She has often rescued my hair when I've bleached the life out of it, which has happened several times. Voodou offer student discount, they also have a loyalty card scheme which entitles you to a free haircut once you have collected 8 stamps on your card. They offer half price colouring on Thursday and Saturday which can work out really cheap. They also offer a £10 voucher for all new customers, or those who have not visited Voodou in the past 12 months. There is also a corporate discount card scheme which entitle you to 20% off. They offer a huge range of prices for cuts, different types of colouring, hair up styles, perms, relaxing treatments and conditioning treatments. You can choose a level of stylist to match your budget. This is an excellent salon. I never fail to come out here fully satisfied, cheered up and happy.

I am not particularly adventurous, I don't get colour or perms, but a cut and finish generally does me nicely. If you go for a graduate stylist it will cost you £17.50 which I just can't complain about. The final finish is pretty good. If you want to go for the top of the top (the director) you will have to pay £31-34 which I still cannot complain about. I have paid £45 before, at other hairdressers. I haven't had any treatments at Avant Garde but there is a good selection - hydro-active mineral salt scrub, enzymatic sea mud wrap, body therapy hydro pack, body massages (full body or back, neck and shoulders), hair removal, tanning, eyes, hands and feet, nail enhancement and ear piercing. For £100 per person they received dinner bed and breakfast and one free treatment as well as full access to all of the facilities including the gym, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Mum loved it all: the food, especially the breakfast was very generous and just delicious, the treatments were excellent and the staff were great. I think she was most impressed by the location and the hotel in general; the hotel is quite isolated (and thus possibly difficult to get to via public transport, the staff were unsure of the nearest bus stop or train station..) but this adds to the serenity. The hall is, by all accounts, beautiful, luxurious and one of the best spa retreats around.

Their shops can be found normally in the middle of the high street and inside the shops items are sensibly organised so that lunch time shopping is done quickly. Superdrug stock the same sort of items as boot. You can find mens deodrants and shaving items as well as aftershave. For women they have lots of beauty products. I am not a women myself but from previous visits they seemed to have a good selection of womens things. They also sell food and drink which is also convient. I would go as far as to say that Superdrug is much cheaper then boots. They regularly have good offers on. They vary from buy 2 get one free to just plain old fashion savings. I find the staff very polite and efficient. They always seem to have the right number of people serving so that you are never queuing for long. This is a plus point for me as I hate wasting my lunch hour in a queue. I like Superdrug and given a choice out between Boots and Superdrug, I would choose Superdrug 99% of the time!

I myself will now only get my haircut here after trying others closer to my home that weren't as good. It says a lot that people are willing to travel into town just to get a haircut at a humble barbers such as this. Haircut at the time of writing this is £10.50 and worth every penny.
