LOVE this thrift store. The employees are kind and there's always a gem to be found! This is by far McCalls best thrift spot!

The Hub

The HUB is the nerve center of Challis, Idaho. It looks and acts like your typical thrift store…read more Indeed, that's why everyone's there--to buy bargains unheard of anywhere but Challis. But The HUB is so much more--it's where people go to gossip--to learn the latest--to catch up with friends--to keep the proverbial "ear to the ground." In the meantime, of course, they are soaking up life's best thrift store deals. The HUB--where practically everything is fifty cents. It's the only thrift store we've ever experienced where there's practically always a line waiting for the door to open at noon. That's when the Challis siren wails--noon. And, fittingly, The HUB's door swings wide once again for the Faithful to swarm inside on a bargain hunting rampage. The HUB is a department store, five and dime, and Ladies Social Club all rolled into one slightly stuffy former flower shop. When people throughout Custer County compliment one another on an article of clothing, 99% of the time the response will be, "I got it at The HUB." The complimenter usually asks, "Fifty cents?" And the complimentee almost always replies, "Yep, fifty cents" The HUB is run by a group of Challis women who live and breathe for their weekly hours behind The HUB counter. Collectively, they are a walking talking Challis wikipedia. Need to know anything about Challis or one of its maybe not-so-famous residents? Just go ask a few polite questions at The HUB. Yep, you'll come out with a mind full of new insight and a few great new clothes as well. The Hub Ladies work for free. ALL of the proceeds get divvied up each early December. Every worthy group in Challis and Custer County gets an annual check from The HUB. The list of recipients is dutifully typed and posted next to the door so we can all see who got what all year long. It's inspiring. It's worthy. It's fun. It's The HUB--Helping Us Build.

So, my daughter and I made our way in to see what kind of neat treasures we can find. Walking in, it's quite overwhelming. It's a good sized store front but they have a lot crammed onto the sales floor. We made our way through through the store and they have some pretty pieces available. Tea sets, furniture, clothes. Surprisingly, I was quite taken back on some of the pricing her. I found an old birdcage and they wanted almost 200 bucks for it. That is some crazy business. Some salad bowl sets were 10 cause I couldn't imagine pricing anything above that. A tea set for 175 dollars. As full the store was with product, nothing really stuck out to me. To be honest, this place had a thrift store vibe with crazy pricing. Is everything vintage? No. It's a neat store if you're willing to maneuver your way through all the clutter. The pricing is out of this world and you can probably find similar things at the Idaho Youth Ranch for a quarter of the cost. It was neat that we made it in to check out but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

The music is loud and setting a nice vibe to the place. There's colorful pieces, stunning furniture and art everywhere. Each piece of furniture was perfectly placed with the most stunning accessories and accents around it. It was hard not to admire all of it! The music is making you happy, appreciating all the beauty in each treasure in the store. I appreciate the old Pepsi soda machine, the Nintendo with Super Mario brothers on the TV, ready to be played, the rich plant life that made the place feel alive and vibrant. It was truly like walking back into my past as a kid. Bringing back memories of blowing into the video game so it would play right. Putting a coin in the vending machine to buy a soda for a quarter. I was 10 all over again. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything. The esthetic here doesn't quite fit my Shabby Chic cottage I got going on at home. But I'm so happy I got to check this joint out. It was fun walking around and absorbingit all in. If you're looking for treasures with a retro vibe to it, this joint is the place to hit up.
