Plenty of street parking available for a couple of coins. Near the elevators is plenty of information helping you get to the correct floor and room. The tile floors are amazing and accent the beautiful light wood trim well. There is also an attendant just after the front doors to help you with directions. Plenty of different rooms specializing in a diverse amount of legal workings to help you be, well, legal. Take a moment and enjoy this beautiful building and walk the halls that are lined with art and the history of the staff that have walked them.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD…read more The Union County Historical Society is housed in the local historic court house building which was built in 1899. My absolute favorite part of this building was the top floor which housed the courtroom. I felt as if I was stepping into a scene from "To kill A Mockingbird" because this room reminded me of the courtroom scene from the movie. It was so cool, that words cannot express how it felt to be transported back in time. I experienced this room from every possible position, the audience, the jury, the defendant, the jury and even the Judge's chair. When you yell guilty!, there is a nice echo! Love it! This courthouse was super simple, besides the main room there were two smaller rooms used for jury deliberations and as the judge's chamber. This space is now used for Friday night concerts where you can hear Bluegrass, gospel and other forms of music. On the lower level is the main office and several rooms that reflect the towns history. The specific rooms reflect sports, religion, education, local politics, and military history. You will also find some interesting artifacts in the main hallway. I was surprised that there wasn't any information on the civil war just later wars. You must step outside and view the front of this building from a distance as it is truly breathtaking. I am so glad that a group of passionate citizens decided to fight the planned destruction of this building and its contents. It was absolutely worth being saved and is now the pride of this community. This courthouse is an absolute must see on your visit to the area!.

There was not much information there about the home on signs, so when I got home I had to look it up. I found a little bit of history about it. History: This two-story 1815 home next to the courthouse in Pikeville, TN was owned by John Bidgeman. Bridgeman was a local civic and business leader who outfitted a company of Confederate infantry from Bledsoe County. A federal-style house built in 1815, the John Bridgman House was one of the earliest dwellings in Pikeville. John Bridgeman was the founder of Pikeville and named the town after his home in North Carolina, Pike. The land that the John Bridgman house sits on is part of the original 30 acres purchased in 1816 to establish the city of Pikeville. The house was sold in 1992 to the First National Bank of Pikeville who helped restore it to its original glory. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 24, 1993. John migrated to Tennessee about 1811. Military records show that John joined the East Tennessee Militia at Washington, Rhea County, Tennessee during the War of 1812, where he served as a Sergeant. He was discharged May 14, 1814 after serving four months and eleven days. John was in Campbell County, Tennessee in December 1815, when he gave a power of attorney to collect any payments due him for his military service. John married Lavenia Cox at Bridgman's Mill, in Knox County, Tennessee John settled in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, where he appeared in the Bledsoe County court records in 1818, as a Commissioner for the town of Pikeville. Court records indicate that John bought and sold thousands of acres of land between the years 1818 and 1847. He also bought and sold a number of slaves between 1821 and 1837. John was elected to the House of Representatives for Bledsoe County, for the 13th General Assembly in 1819-1821

But I will say the following about this town: Okay, so I think the county courthouse here is positively peculiar and gorgeous. Made of local Crab Orchard stone it has such a unique shape and impeccable color. The surrounding bandstand and greenery is just charming. The clock tower has me looking over my shoulder for Marty in his DeLorean. What's up Doc? Let me snap my 89th picture of this facade over here. The downtown has really intuitive visitor guides. You can stop in the gazebo area and pick up a brochure or just look at the famous spots mapped out on signage above you. Did I mention this is also a retirement community? I feel like the city is used to foot traffic and all the investment in tourism shows it. If you have the time, you can visit the old depot or museums or just march down the flawless historical downtown streets. I really loved the old buildings here. There's shopping. There's some food but it's mostly outside of the historic downtown and closer to the busy roads.

The Dolly Parton Statue at 125 Court Ave in Sevierville is a must-stop -- right in front of the Sevier County Courthouse and easy to find with street parking. The bronze of a young, barefoot Dolly with her guitar in hand is beautifully kept and such a perfect tribute to our hometown hero. More than just a great photo op, it really represents everything Dolly has given back to East Tennessee through her music, Dollywood, and the Imagination Library. A beautiful, heartfelt memorial to a living legend who changed this area forever. Worth the detour if you're near Dollywood or downtown Sevierville.

The bronze statue by Gatlinburg artist, Jim Gray, depicts a young Dolly holding her guitar with her big smile and curly hair sitting on a rock. The statue was dedicated in 1989. I wandered around and was impressed with the amazing beauty of this historical building. Everytime I drive in Sevierville I see it towering over all the other buildings. It makes me grin for it is beautiful. It was build in 1896, and got on the historical registry in 1971. This magnificent structure was designed by noted architect Kenneth McDonald of Louisville, Kentucky. McDonald was known for his Beaux-Arts Classicism design. The building was constructed by C. W. Brown of Lenoir City, at a cost of $21,000.00. From its beginning, the new courthouse has been a symbol of civic pride. The courthouse is a three-story structure, measuring 85 feet by 70 feet. The foundation is made of limestone blocks, 24 to 30 inches thick. The exterior walls up to the main floor are of hand-shaped limestone. They were obtained from a local quarry and hauled to the courthouse site by horse drawn wagons. From the main floor up, the exterior walls are brick, made at local brick yards. The tower is the dominating feature of the Courthouse rising 75 feet above the building. It rises 130 feet from the ground and is made of wood columns 10 inches by 10 inches rising from wood trusses. Midway up the tower is a large Seth Thomas clock which cost $1,353.45. For years, the clock was wound manually but today it's electric and strikes at the top of every hour. The metal dome on top of the tower was made by George G. M. Nichols.
