Was visiting some friends in the area October 2023 and came here for a day trip. I'm from TX & a few names popped up when I hit the check-in button, so forgive me if this isn't the exact location. In any event, this is such a beautiful museum! From artwork, model & actual ship pieces, sports trophies & even a cafe it was just amazing. Around every corner there was something to see. What I really liked was in some areas there were lounge pieces that you could take a seat on. On the 3rd floor which had much of the paintings is where I sat I know for about an hour. It was just that pretty. What I also liked was the way those working that day were being quite nice. I travel a bit & will be honest and say sometimes museum staff can be unwelcoming. At times I've even felt I was being followed like I was a child who didn't know NOT to touch the items. It was not the case here! As I was admiring the whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling, one even came to explain some pretty cool details of how it got there & even suggested a part of the museum many over look. Had a light snack in the cafe. Great service, tea was nice & hot. I can't wait to visit Dundee again so I can visit this gallery again. I could spend a whole day in there. Housed in a splendid Gothic Revival-style building and displaying Dundee's main collection. Voted Dundee's best loved building in 2000, The McManus has been at the heart of art and culture in the city since its opening in 1867. The galleries display artworks and objects drawn from the museum's collections of Art, Archaeology, History, Natural Sciences and World Cultures and provide a fascinating insight into Dundee's people, culture and environment. The museum has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment programme, re-opening to the public in 2010 with new displays, a specially designed learning suite, cafe and gift shop. The refurbished museum doesn't utilize the space as well as the old layout. The collections are housed in a dramatic gothic style building but there is a lot of empty space inside and the atmosphere is more reverential than anything else. There isn't much to interact with and the cafe and gift shop are expensive. Admission is free which is just as well as I probably wouldn't pay to visit. read more

To be honest the New McManus Gallery is such a disappointment. It seems that there is more empty space than actual artifacts. I took me 15 year old son with me and he was disappointed too, this was because I told him about all the great things that were available to kids in the old gallery. I remember going on Saturdays after swimming at the pool and spending hours watching an older lady using the weaving loom and the dark ages area with the Pict settlement scared me and my friends every time. Now that there is only one gallery I will not looking forward to visiting Dundee again. read more

It was Dundee's best loved building but the heart is gone since the refurbishment. Everyone's best part of the museum is gone and been replaced by a coffee shop. read more
