I dealt with one of the accountants, seeking help with income taxes in regards to an estate. I was charged a fortune. The simple income tax returns, probably done by a clerk in the office, weren't received by me until April 27. I've never filed so late in my life. A covering letter stated when I sold the family home, which is my primary residence, and I am on title, capital gains would be payable. For the first couple of years, it would be at my tax rate. Three years after the death of my husband, it would be at the highest marginal tax rate, currently 53.5%. I'd lose over half the value of the house!!! I lost sleep for a week. I then phoned the CRA. I explained my situation. I even read out part of the will. No, I do not have to pay capital gains. I am on title and it is my primary residence. Now, I had two opinions. I saw another accountant. No, not taxable. So, I am dumping McLaren Trefanenko. I don't need the stress and I sure don't need wrong information. read more
