[I am not sure why Yelp has me in California. I live in Cary, IL.] Maryellen Howell, Manager at McHenry County Animal Control is the most heartless person I have had the misfortune to encounter. My loving Siberian husky, Yuki, bit my son's friend on December 30, 2019, which was reported appropriately. I did everything Ms. Howell set forth in her correspondence (the 10-day hold with the vet check on both ends, had him neutered and went the extra step to put him on Prozac until the testosterone left his body fully, bought and used a cage muzzle whenever he was outside and even purchase the rabies transfer tag, etc.). Ms. Howell executed the Decision and Order on January 27, 2020, deeming Yuki as dangerous which meant he had rules and regulations to live by but could live in our home. The envelope the Order came in had a January 28 postmark (meaning it was probably delivered January 29). At 3:00 p.m., January 29th, I open my door to two Animal Control workers and a Cary Police Officer notifying me that Ms. Howell has bumped up the investigation to a vicious dog inquiry and they were impounding Yuki that minute. I had not even gotten the Order yet that he could live at home. I was too emotional to call Ms. Howell that day and instead called her the following day, and with no compassion or empathy in her voice, she stated she could and did impound my dog at any point for 9-15 months while she was determining his status at a housing rate of $19/day and court fees and even after that the judge could rule he was vicious and put him down anyway. I asked if I could visit him which she empathically replied no for the entire impoundment period. She also stated that she was having him evaluated to see if he required the Prozac my vet provided. They were too lazy to give it to him, obviously. The tone of her voice and the way she phrased her replies told me that my poor Yuki was not going to be treated well. He is a pack animal and was used to a lot of attention throughout the day. I loved him too much to make him endure that for me to have him in my life. The kindest thing I could do for Yuki now was to approve euthanasia so he wouldn't have to be alone 24/7 for 9-15 months. How can they warrant that kind of treatment? He wasn't a vicious dog but by the end of that stent, he certainly would have been. HAD I SEEN THE ORDER SHE EXECUTED JUST 2 DAYS PRIOR, I WOULD HAVE FOUGHT HER TOOTH AND NAIL TO RELEASE YUKI. When my son saw the Order deeming him dangerous (allowing him to live at home), he wept and kept gasping out I am sorry Yuki, I'm sorry! Maryellen Howell overstepped her Order with no explanation and stole my son's dog away. She has no heart.... no empathy.... and no soul. My family will hate her until our last breaths. Someone like Maryellen Howell should be working in the public sector! read more
