Márquez Law - Managing Partner Jason Márquez

Márquez Law

Southeast, Virginia Village

I worked with John at Marquez Law for several months, from August, 2021 to June, 2022. I can…read morehappily say that I was extremely lucky to have them on my side. The entire staff at Marquez Law was responsive and attentive to my needs and John was absolutely great; he usually knew the answer to my question/issue right away or would immediately find out the answer. I never felt like I was being talked down to or wasting his time. Those 10 months were probably the most painful time in my life, but it all worked out, because I had the best legal team for my situation. I would recommend Marquez Law without hesitation.

We retained Jason Marquez based on his strong initial presentation and positive Google reviews. At…read morethe outset, he indicated that achieving a 50/50 parenting schedule and joint decision-making authority was realistic. Unfortunately, after working with him for approximately five to six years, we were deeply disappointed with the level of advocacy, professionalism, and follow-through provided. While Mr. Marquez was capable of drafting emails and filing motions, his courtroom advocacy consistently fell short. During hearings, he failed to adequately challenge inaccurate claims made by the opposing party, did not contest evidence he later acknowledged was flawed or misused, and did not meaningfully advocate when a judge relied on incorrect information to modify our parenting time. Our original custody schedule was every Tuesday and every other weekend--yet under his representation, our Tuesdays were actually taken away. Aside from securing a 50/50 schedule during the summer months, there was little substantive progress toward the goals we were initially told were achievable. Communication and timeliness were also major issues. On one occasion, Mr. Marquez stated an important email would be handled within a couple of days, but no action was taken for nearly two weeks despite multiple follow-ups. A "final" version of that email was not provided until more than a month later, causing unnecessary delays. He later admitted that he should have met with us in person or by phone rather than relying on prolonged email exchanges, stating that the back-and-forth had left him confused about our objectives. By the end, it was clear he no longer understood what we were trying to accomplish. He repeatedly stated that his email inbox functions as his to-do list, meaning clients must send multiple reminder emails just to ensure tasks are addressed. Billing practices further compounded these concerns. We were charged full amounts for work that did not meet promised timelines or outcomes. Commitments outlined in his own contract were not consistently honored, yet billing continued regardless. We were left responsible for costs associated with delays and unmet assurances, including a closing letter that lacked a file he had promised would be included. Additionally, Mr. Marquez represented my mother in her divorce case, and her experience closely mirrored ours--minimal courtroom advocacy, little strategic effort, and substantial fees despite limited progress. Taken together, these experiences raise serious concerns about consistency, accountability, and overall value. We were also troubled by aspects of his professional conduct. He routinely ended calls by referring to us as "kids," which felt dismissive, disrespectful, and indicative of how little he valued his clients. Given the length of representation and the significant financial investment, we expected far more proactive advocacy, transparency, and strategic leadership. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet those expectations. I would not recommend Mr. Marquez to anyone seeking meaningful progress in a custody case. With a caseload of 90+ clients, it became clear that our matter was lost in the shuffle.

I hired Modern Family Law in December 2025 for a prenuptial agreement and paid $6,169.66 under an…read morehourly fee agreement. It was one of the more frustrating professional experiences I've had. In late March, my attorney sent a revised draft to opposing counsel without tracked changes and acknowledged in writing that he had forgotten to turn them on. Opposing counsel asked for a marked version on April 1. Nothing was sent for the next 15 days, while I was left assuming my matter was moving forward. On April 17, the firm told me in writing that the redlines had been sent to opposing counsel. Opposing counsel confirmed in writing, twice, that she never received them. The firm later acknowledged they had not been sent. Finding that out is what ended my confidence in them entirely. I was offered a $500 credit toward the billing dispute. When I accepted the firm's offer to close the matter, that credit was withdrawn. My file was closed with a $57 charge for preparing the closing letter. I ended up hiring new counsel to finish the work, months later than I should have. Every statement above is supported by emails I still have, including correspondence from opposing counsel. If you work with this firm, document everything and confirm independently that work you're billed for was actually done.

They robbed me blind. They say "in a divorce only the lawyers win" and Josh completely epitomized…read morethis. They had the audacity to keep billing me for weeks after I fired them. I actually had to fire them and do the work myself to get my divorce finalized. $20k in and essentially nothing to show for it.... I had to lock my credit card because even after I told them in writing they had no authority to work on my case they kept hitting it for bills they cooked up. I tried to reason with Josh, but found out he is no longer with the firm. I've heard some shady stuff about him since. I should've done my research. I got his supervisor Karlee involved and she botched the work too, but at a higher hourly rate. This "family" law firm preys on vulnerable people. I literally don't know how they sleep at night.
