That's how I feel about farmers' market food porn here at Ukiah's visually stunning Saturday Farmers' Market. It opens at 9am and goes until around noon, with a nice local park nearby for resting in the shade and abundant amounts of free street parking all over. Of course, you can fill up on food for the coming week here, but what if you don't have the means to carry a lot with you? When visiting a local farmers' market as an out-of-town curiosity seeker, looking without leaping is sometimes pleasure enough. Buying means making a commitment to cook, and if I am just passing through town and have prior reservations to dine, what would be the point? All of this deliciousness would just sit in the back of my car all dressed up but no where to go. What's awesome about a quality farmers' market in summer especially is how great all the produce looks, even if you aren't ready or able to buy that day. Admission here is free and no questions asked. Look, admire, and buy if you can but don't pass this up if you are only passing through. Fruit, veg, and products this delicious deserve all the attention they can get! You can always slake your thirst after at Ukiah Brewing Company's bar when you are through loving the veg with your eyes, or grab a cold brew on nitro at Black Oak Coffee Roasters. But the market itself is a highly recommended stop if you have time to kill on a sunny Saturday afternoon and want to see what's happening in this part of Northern California's ever evolving food scene.

Goat cheese? Ewwwww. - Me, less than a year ago…read more GOAT CHEESE! YAAAAASSSSSS. - Me, now. Bodega and Yerba Santa Goat Cheese has changed my life for the better. I was first introduced to their cheese through a good friend of mine who had an unnatural obsession with goats (and their milk/cheese products). After an empathetic plea from her to try it, and practically forcing some of this cheese down my throat, I finally did, and to my amazement I wasn't gagging over the taste. In fact, I went back for seconds. I haven't had all their cheeses, but I've had all their soft spreadables and my absolute favorites are the Serrano Chili and Bail flavors. Since then, I have been searching for goat cheese every time I shop, and to this day these goat cheeses remain a favorite. I also had the pleasure of visiting their farm out in Lakeport, CA. Javier and Elodie, the couple who run the farm, are the sweetest and you can tell they really care about their goats. Their style of cheesemaking is quite traditional and manual (less machinery than your large-scale production farms), and after seeing the amount of work they put into it, you can see why the cheese is so delicious. It's no wonder why they tend to sell out at the Ferry Building. Even better, they use non-animal rennet in their cheese so you can feel extra good about eating it while supporting a local farmer. First I should tell you a bit about the cheese itself. My favorites are the various kinds of chvre style cheeses, especially the basil. However, if you have a bit extra to spend, I'd go for the plain chvre-style cheese, with a bottle of the hot sauce / marinade from the stand next door. This combination is truly one for the ages. I've also heard great things about the manchego and other harder cheeses. Not only are the cheeses delicious, but Javier seems to be a truly wonderful soul. He has pictures out of his goats, and has an aura about him that puts you immediately at ease. He'll kindly tell you all about any of his cheeses, and he is happy to provide a sample. There are many farmers at the market who are both friendly and informative (and there are also many great cheese vendors). But Javier / Bodega Goat Cheese is the only one who I genuinely look forward to seeing each time I visit.

There was a small mix-up in my order where I received an olive oil instead of one of the balsamics. Not only did they let me keep the olive oil, but they quickly sent out the correct balsamic AND included a free travel-size balsamic as a gift. They handled everything so quickly and professionally--it's clear they truly care about their customers.
