Nineteen Eighty One is a great local restaurant in Manukau, right opposite the Westfield Shopping…read moreCentre. It's a fairly new establishment in the area, but it's become a regular hangout for a few beers and very good food. You definitely feel the '80's vibe when you're there, and its always nice to see a little appreciation for that era. Their pizzas are delicious, particularly 'Rangi's Hangi' and 'Larry the Lamb'. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights. The place gets packed and its always a good laugh- there's even a prize for the team that comes second to last.

For Mains, My wife chose the Steak & Kidney pie with mash. I had the sundried tomato and feta cheese stuffed chicken fillet. My wife said it was the best pie she had ever eaten. I really enjoyed the stuffed chicken too. The decor brought back lots of memories.

After a few hours on the bus traveling from Auckland Airport, Burger Fuel hit the spot. I'm not…read moresure if the location on Yelp is accurate since it doesn't show on their website, but this is where I ate when I was in Rotorua. Burger Fuel is a burger chain in New Zealand with 1 store in Sydney and some in the Middle East. They try their best to offer "healthier" and fresher burgers. And yes, their burgers are pretty tasty. This burger joint is modernly decorated and bright inside. There's plenty of seating for a large or small group. If you're not a burger person, they have plenty of sides from sweet potato fries and milkshakes, even with soy milk! I chose a Vegan V-Dub sandwich: Pumpkin, carrot, chickpea and ginger pattie, beetroot, salad, relish and an aioli sauce. Yum!!! I love me a good veggie burger. I washed it all down with a dairy free caramel mylk-shake. Sigh, I wish the US had more burger places like Burger Fuel, though I know food tastes better outside of the US because of all the additives and crap they put in our food. I guess I will have to satiate my burger craving by trying to re-create BF's V-Dub. Do you think they'll give me the recipe?!

I'd say it's a big step up from fast food but not as fancy (or as expensive) as the "gourmet" burger. I wanted to try a chicken burger but their options were super limited and they all came with bacon. The point was to go with just chicken for my meat. But oh well. After we put in our order we noticed a sign on the table advertising what looked like the limited edition burger which sounded amazing: chicken breast with creamed corn and melted cheese. Yum!! I ran up to the counter right away and asked to change my order but our burgers were already being made. Which I guess is a good thing when your food is prepared right away. Plus we were pretty hungry so we decided just to eat our original orders. The burgers were great. We ordered the Bio Fuel which basically was all about the fried egg. I highly recommend this burger especially because it was delicious!

One of the gals I was with ordered a Create your Own chicken burger and had to wait well past 15-20 minutes. The other lass got hers pretty normalish time. But mine... Phew... Big Mac and a boys Cheeseburger Happy Meal. Yep you read that right, a Happy Meal!!! Well, my Happy Meal was more of an Unhappy Meal... I'm pretty sure one of the prerequisites for a cheeseburger is the patty, but no, not mine. Maybe they thought, 'hey, he's got a Big Mac too, he's being greedy with his beef intake today so we'll punish him' When I politely (yes I can be polite) asked for a new one with meat she went to slap it a cold set of buns. Jeez girl, don't ya know ya gotta warm buns up before ya get the meat in. Get your mind out of the gutter please people, this is a Family Restaurant!!! So, waiting and watching more service disasters produced a circus performance worthy of Barnum and Bailey, so it was kinda fun watching every single frozen Coke sit for ages melting in the heat of customer frustration till people's food arrived late as, but it's a dumb move to serve those before the food arrives. And it was Sunday night and I can understand Matamata is pretty busy because of the tourist vibe, but wow, it was one inept move after another. I seriously hope they were trainees because the manager sure spoke to them like newbies. Poor showing, but hey, they have plenty of room to improve till the next time I head down and risk it.
