I worked at McDonalds, Ferndown, Dorset for about 1 month or just over, may - june 2006.
Before you start in store you are sent on a induction day, so for the store I worked (my store was a franchise) in I was sent to Salisbury, where you are sat in a room with other new crew members with the personnel person.
You are given a pack with various information and leaflets inside it, are talked to about various things, have a tiny test to complete and watch a video and are also given your shift hours for the 1st 2 weeks.
The whole day lasts about 5 hours and you are given a free meal afterwards, and are paid for the hours you are there!!
I found that the staff, including management were extremely friendly and always there to help.
There was always at lease 1 member of management working on each shift, normally 2, and they would not just be sitting in the office! They would be in the kitchen making the food, and also helping on drive-thru.
The store was always clean, and there was always a crew member on some sort of cleaning duty.
Before I had worked at McDonalds, I had heard all sorts of things and from that I had imagined the store to be untidy, unfriendly staff etc, but this is far from the case.
A job as a crew member is good if you need flexable hours, as your shifts are different every day, but I was not keen on being paid every 2 weeks - prefer monthly.
It is a very busy and hard working role and you have to have really good communication skills and not be afraid to shout!! Otherwise the kitchen staff will not hear you and your orders will not be done!!
One benefit if you wanna save some money is that you get a free meal every shift - although I have to admit the food aint great, and that was the only time I've eaten it and will never again! (but after one months work I put on just over 1\2 stone in weight as I was eating McDonalds every day =S!! So maybe some own food at beaktimes!!) read more
