Nineteen Eighty One is a great local restaurant in Manukau, right opposite the Westfield Shopping…read moreCentre. It's a fairly new establishment in the area, but it's become a regular hangout for a few beers and very good food. You definitely feel the '80's vibe when you're there, and its always nice to see a little appreciation for that era. Their pizzas are delicious, particularly 'Rangi's Hangi' and 'Larry the Lamb'. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights. The place gets packed and its always a good laugh- there's even a prize for the team that comes second to last.

This was our first visit at 1981. The waitress was very friendly and informed us of the "Specials"…read more I asked if I could non alcoholic version of one of their cocktail's, she said no problem. We had the garlic cob for Entree. For Mains, My wife chose the Steak & Kidney pie with mash. I had the sundried tomato and feta cheese stuffed chicken fillet. My wife said it was the best pie she had ever eaten. I really enjoyed the stuffed chicken too. The decor brought back lots of memories.

I've been to Celcius on more than one occasion and my experiences have been pretty good. I always…read moreremember their stonegrill menu as being quite good- the Land Lovers stonegrill is a favourite of mine- but they've got a widespread menu that covers brunch to dinner. Its a central location in Botany Junction on Ormiston Road before you reach the main town centreso it's great for a quiet lunch date before a spot of shopping there. I'd go out on a limb and say Celcius is best known for its somewhat rowdy Friday nights, where you're bound to find every 18 year old from East Auckland having the time of their lives. I wouldn't try this place on a Saturday, as its usually dead as can be.

Though I used to work in Manukau I am now located on the shore and so I don't get to visit as much. Celsius was my first stone grill and I tend to defer to that when I sit down there. I will agree with other reviewers that sometimes the service lets them down, but the food has never disappointed me. The atmosphere is dark, the TVs on the wall are constantly tuned to sports stations, the fireplace is always on in winter months, all of this creates a sports bar feeling. Its a good meal, the ribs are nice, the steaks are good and honestly ... its a nice place, BUT the feeling is very sports, very subdued when seated indoors. There is some outdoor seating but get in quick to grab it as the smokers tend to gravitate there.

Ok, where do I begin…read more.. Burgers are ok but put together hurriedly. Expect poor inadequate service. Especially when it's quiet, as it was when I went in. The lass apologized at her obvious lack of till skills and lack of menu knowledge, but still... 3 of them to figure out which one I ordered. Bbq Double Deluxe... The one at the top of the menu... The one hiding in plain sight... Good grief!!! I go here very rarely mainly because Burger Fuel requires a 2nd mortgage for a decent sized burger, and Noodle Canteen is too big to even try and attempt to finish and work after. I've come to the conclusion that almost every burger joint that one visits has the prerequisite to have a complete lack of knowledge, ability, and basic listening skills needed to work in the fast food industry to work there... "Oh, you've come looking for a job? Are you incompetent at every level apart from breathing? Can you stand there with a non-plussed look on your face with a committed look of confusion? Will you make a mistake at every request from a customer, and apologize even though you've wasted 10 valuable minutes of their lunchtime just to order?" "Duh, can you say that again, I wasn't listening and definitely didn't understand a single word that may have registered in my small brain" "Wow, EXCELLENT!!! YOU'RE HIRED!!! We'll start you on the Night roster" "Huh? What? Sorry, I passed out for a minute, I think I forgot to breathe" "Damn, we have an over achiever here... Lunchtime roster it is!!!" I'm looking forward to giving a good review at one of these places for a change, but I kinda like how useless the staff are because the reviews are so much more fun to write. As long as I don't get food poisoning, you can trust me to find the places others shouldn't, or need to visit for comedy gold.
