My daughter had a 45 minute assessment today to figure out strengths and weaknesses in math to determine the right fit for tutoring at Mathnasium in Evergreen Park. During her assessment, (which most would consider a test) a tutor on duty talked the entire time while seated near my child, held a parent consultation across from my child, stood up and small talked a few feet from my child's desk area LOUDLY, yelled across the room to the same parent exiting, I mean she would not shut up. I found it very distracting from where I was seated and very unprofessional. If a child is taking an assessment, would it be too much to ask for a lowered voice? Move to a quiet corner of the center? Talk softly? Consult the other parent there in another part of the room? Well apparently this was too much to ask. The tutor and the owner, once the other parent left, began to talk about holiday and weekend plans, their upcoming work shifts, how the owner's wife fell down the stairs...etc. all while the tutor is standing over and near my child taking an assessment. How rude! I got up twice. I began to coach myself to calm down. But, I know my child, she is nine years old and doesn't concentrate well when things are going on around her, especially adult small talk, YOU KNOW? LIKE MOST KIDS!!!!. I went over the first time to see how she was doing because this woman talking and talking was getting on my nerves and I was seated several feet away, I figured my kid couldn't possibly be knocking out this test. Wait I'm sorry, assessment. She was stuck on a problem. The second time I went over I was through with this place. The tutor was standing near my child asking about weekend plans. My child was still on the same problem she was on minutes before! Mr O (the owner) told me that he told her if she's stuck on a problem to circle it and keep going, I'm surprised she didn't circle the whole thing! When I asked to reschedule during a more private session with less distractions they both looked puzzled. The owner said "During assessments there is no quiet place this is the environment." Whoa that was my cue. My request was incredulous to them. Ha. Whelp we are out. No apology no effort, no concern. Nothing. No customer service? I personally will not spend over $200 a month here. Mr. O was very pleasant and detailed over the phone but once I got to the location, my impressions slowly faded. Also, I must say Mr O if you read this, the tutor once she found out you were coming, she told the little girl she was tutoring that they needed to move from the way they were seated. She wasn't facing the window and did not see me when I entered nor did she greet me. She was more concerned about why you were coming up there. SMH.

I was very apprehensive initially and shared my concerns with the program director after the initial testing and results. She assured me that my concerns relating to phonics would be addressed and added to the program. She also stated that our 7th grade daughter is at 6th grade reading and comprehension level. After nearly two weeks completed, 4 classes per week scheduled at the latest possible time to have as few students present, none of the items we discussed were accomplished. I made a phone after the first week to the education director (the person responsible for the individualized program for our daughter and who worked with her at least once per week) to inquire as to why the Sylvan site showed her starting with 7th grade level material when she tested for 6th and why phonics was not introduced as promised. Her response was one of encouragement, give the program time to introduce the phonics, and that she would look into the level at which she started. The next week went without the introduction of phonics again but they did manage to load that aspect onto the website as an area to cover at least! Overall, we pulled our daughter out of this over promised and under delivering program after 8 classes in which the best thing our daughter remembers is earning candy as a reward/recognition. I was very leary reading all the online reviews and was repeatedly told by the program director, "this, in no way, reflects upon individual learning in Merrillville, Schererville, or Valporaiso." She maintained that everyone may have different experiences with various regions/states, but the three centers associated in NW Indiana do not have these issues. I beg to differ hence why we no longer attend. I strongly encourage you to contact your school guidance counselors for resources and to avoid this institition, well at least the Merrillville location (closest to us in Crown Point).

It is like a small family here. The classes cover many different topics and are very "hands on". There is a play area for open play and a large room for more exercise type activity. There are educational field trips throughout the school year. The only reason its not 5 stars is because I would prefer a longer (duration) learning program instead of 2.5 hours per day. Very happy to be part of the Thornridge family!

He had such an unbelievable and valuable experience at Thornridge that he was actually crying and truly sad it was over (as was I). He has built many incredible friendships and has nothing but great memories from the classroom to the fun field trips he attended. The teachers genuinely care about the children and are very creative in the lessons they teach. For instance, learning the alphabet, numbers, teaching the kids to write their names, and even cooking! They are very involved with every activity they do and truly enjoy teaching the children. They put so much more time into the regular school day (2.5 hrs), their day is not over after 11:30 am, by no means. I am very happy that my youngest son will be going there next school year for the 2 day program and then the following year for the 5 day Pre-K program. I know he will have the same special experiences and build friendships like me oldest son did. Very happy and thrilled to be a part of the Thornridge family!

I have always believed the Montessori methods and the philosophy of the program; however I was completely unimpressed with this particular location and the head mistress in specific. It turned out to be no more than an intolerant day care facility at best; they should not be allowed to call themselves educators. After three days, they informed my nanny when he went to retrieve my son from school that he wasn't welcome back and it would be his last day. The head mistress made no attempt to contact a parent to discuss with them personally what the particular issues were, what they were doing to attempt to rectify internally, and what we as parents could be doing at home to reinforce. Very disappointing after day three; are you kidding? When asked to make an appointment to speak with her further about the situation my request was denied stating that my check and some of his belongings were in the mail... Let me add that my son attended another pre-school prep program successfully the year prior (his teacher and her aides were disappointed to see him go when we moved) and is in week two of a new program without any issue.
