Waited 20 minutes for a treadmill. Get rid of some of the ellipticals, nobody uses them. Get more treadmills, everybody uses the treadmills.

Easy drop in for $10. Used the pool and steam room. Pefect for my trip. Staff super friendly and helpful.

This is a great Y. People are always friendly, facilities are clean. I go around 5 and there are plenty of machines (jogging, cycling, elliptical, weightlifting) available. That's about all I can report on because I haven't tried swimming or classes. The prices is about $100 for a family of 2, which is a good deal. read more

I wanted to get back into swimming and after several attempts at other facilities decided to join at the recommendation of my neighbor. I chose the Y for a few reasons. It's close to home, it's reasonably priced, and it has two pools. As someone who used to swim competitively, lap swimming can be a gamble. What I mean is that sometimes you've got people kind of floating around in lanes or playfully swimming with their kids; with two pools, that's rarely ever an issue. At most I've had to share a lane with one other swimmer. The locker room isn't the fanciest, but it's clean and I'm not expecting anything fancy. My only real pet peeve is that it's hard to get the pool schedule. I'm hoping they eventually put it on the app like they have the group fitness schedule. Usually I end up emailing to get it, but it should be available through the app and website and not so darn hard to find. The schedule rarely changes, but what does pop up that the pool closes early or for a whole day and I'd rather not waste a trip. I haven't participated in any of the group classes yet, but plan to. Our neighbors and some family members in the neighborhood are also members and also have had positive experiences. read more

Joining Y is quick and easy. But if you need answers to any other questions or make changes to swimming class (Aquatics) or summer camp waitlist/cancellation you will be directed by the front desk to reach out to the specific department. Your chance to ever speak to these folks in person or get a return phone call or email response is zero to none. It goes dead silent, even after multiple attempts. This is very frustrating and not the level of service one can expect. The facility here is decent. However, the family locker room is gross at times so not sure how well the cleaning crew performs the cleaning. If you are just using the facility and don't have questions/changes to any of the programs they offered such as in the Aquatics and Summer Camp (so far this has been my experience) then you are good. Otherwise, it is very frustrating being given the round around and not getting a response from the specific departments. Suggestions would be to train the front desk staff in other areas outside of signing up folks for membership and/or improve their website to allow members the ability for self-service, ie make changes/updates to enrolled programs. I prefer to provide feedback directly and allow them the opportunity to respond but their website does not have any feedback form. read more

I really want to love the YMCA, but the staff and management make it incredibly difficult. The facilities at the McCormick YMCA are just fine, My family and I have been members for about a year, however, we continue to have a difficult time getting accurate and helpful information from staff. Scheduling changes are poorly communicated or not communicated at all. When I first became a member, a manager at that time told me that the Y would soon be expanding its childcare to include infants, which has not yet happened. I continue to not be able to utilize the childcare because it's not available for children under the age of three. My family and I recently had a recent experience that was the last straw for us. On a visit to the YMCA pool, we left two wet bathing behind in the locker room during the chaos of departure (we have two young children). As soon as we got home (about 20 minutes later), I called the Y. I was told that the suits would be placed in the lost and found and I could pick them up the next day. The next day my partner returned for the suits and was told that they had been disposed of and that the Y has a policy of not keeping any wet or damp items. I completely understand this policy and why keeping such items could be a hygiene issue. That is precisely why I called as soon as I realized I had left them behind. If the person I spoke to had told me they were going to be thrown away, I would have returned immediately (with two small children in tow) to retrieve the items. Because the employee gave me the wrong information our suits ended up in the trash. When I reached out to supervisor Jonathan Anaya, he evaded all responsibility on behalf of the YMCA. Executive Director Angel La Luz never returned my emails regarding the incident. I am not suggesting that the YMCA is responsible for lost items, but it is certainly responsible for training staff and ensuring that members are afforded accurate information. The YMCA is clearly not invested in training competent, caring staff members, ensuring member satisfaction, or building community. read more

This Y has stepped it up in recent months. They are offering more and better classes, they have an AWESOME daycare (which my 2 year old, who typically hates all daycares, loves!), a clean parking lot (does anyone care if it's dirty? not sure, but this one is nice and clean), and a very responsive staff (in that they actually respond to comment cards). This Y isn't in the best location in Logan Square. And a couple years ago I know that there were a lot of thugs that would congregate nearby (or even play b-ball in the gym) and make getting to and leaving this Y a bit uncomfortable (who the hell wants to feel uneasy when they're going to work out, or trying to get home after working out? not me. certainly not my wife). But I've noticed recently that the McCormick YMCA staff has been doing a lot to reach out to the youth in the community, encourage them to participate in making their neighborhood a safer one, and as a result, have helped to make the YMCA on Lawndale a much more pleasant place to work out. I've only been going for a couple of months, but this is definitely a family oriented place with all the good of a big box gym. They offer free and paid classes for both children and adults. They have something for eveyone. There is also a pool coming up next year. Also, and this is very important. The cost for what you are getting is a huge value. They have certified instructors for all their classes, and all the staff in the day care are all CPR certified. They have free tours, check them out. read more

This is hands down the best gym I've ever joined - its simple and straightforward, all the machines are updated and always working, its clean and affordable and has everything you need, including a few extras like a wonderful steam room and plentiful parking and yoga and other classes. But more so than being an affordable gym that functions for my workout needs, it is the staff and membership community here that takes it above and beyond and makes me love this place. The membership is really diverse, people of all shapes and sizes and ethnicities and backgrounds are all doing their own thing, and it makes it a really comfortable and judgement-free place to workout. It's very family oriented and I often see families and friends working out together and enjoying themselves, and it makes it feel like a place you belong and its okay to joke around with people and say hi. The staff is so kind, especially the aerobics teacher Julissa - she has extraordinary energy and is so kind and welcoming. Even though I am by far the most clueless person in the weights class and Zumba, she makes me feel like I'm a queen and makes everything fun through her energy. There are so many regulars to the classes, and afterwards they all stay and chat and hang out in the steam room together, and its just so lovely to be a part of a gym where people actually talk and form a community instead of self-consciously ignoring each other. I feel like the McCormick YMCA is the kind of place from an era gone by where people actually formed community in real life instead of just on the internet - except with modern machines with TV's on them :). And there is a whole new addition with pools coming soon. So, don't hesitate to join this Y, but only come if you're not a jerk and will uphold the community spirit. read more

We've been coming this YMCA since our daughter was 2 years old... she'll be 10 soon. Having a YMCA so close to home - takes us less than 10 minutes to walk here - is amazing! There are so many programs available at the Y and the staff is so helpful. They remodeled the building a few years ago to be able to add a massive pool building. In this building you have a pool to swim laps and another to play in with your family. The lifeguards are very attentive to the people in the pools. They offer swimming lessons to both members and non-members for an additional fee. There are so many classes to take in their new group classrooms and there is even martial arts (for an additional fee) for children. They offer child care service (included in your membership fee) for children that can't join you in the workout area. There are three locker rooms available - women, men and family. There is a massive gym for all sorts of sports! Come and give them a try... you won't regret it! read more

Well they refused to reimburse me for everything that was stolen from me, and they lied saying nothing happened there in six months. Other guys I work out with told me they recently lost stuff too. They just don't bring anything in with them. David Rodriguez who is the director never reach out to me I had to track him down. Even though it's bothersome that I can't often arrive here without humming Morrissey under my breath (and, occasionally, I'll admit it, the Village People), this is my gym for better or for worse. I walked through its doors for the first time back in January completely clueless about what this "exercise thing" was, knowing only that I was turning 35 in April (maybe or maybe not the day I'm writing this review) and that I should probably start taking care of myself. Turns out, this is one of those gyms that takes care of you. On the first day that I walked up the stairs I got the tour and was told, "don't worry, people here come in all shapes, sizes, and ability levels." And it's true. There are a few marathon trainers who cadences on the treadmills blind me and a few weight lifters whose chest muscles are as big as my head taking in creatine in the locker room. But, in general, it's just folks who are trying to get into or stay in shape. And they're not all dressed to impress (though there are some incredibly cute hipster girls here). I've actually seen people working out in leather jackets and boots. Not that the machines don't deserve better than to be beat down by someone working out in steel-toed shitkickers. Despite the perception some people might have about "Y-quality," this location just got brand new machines last year. My favorite indisputable qualitied new thing, however, is the steam room. My more positive outlook on life this year is less the exercise itself than the meditation while chilling in the heat box. There are a few negatives though, unfortunately. And the first does have to do with said room. People (at least in the men's locker room), for some reason, seem to have no problem going in there naked. I rarely share food. I don't like the idea of sharing germs from a dude before me's hindquarters. These same folks walk around the locker room either still naked or in man panties. Part of me wants to spend the money I save with the Y's sliding scale membership rates and invest in boxer shorts for all the other male members so I don't have to see their male members! The other downside is since the Y is family friendly, there are tons of hyperactive children running around in the evenings while their parents work out. Especially during Zumba class for some reason. I thing Wednesday Zumba might translate into "let your kids crawl all over the rowing machine." All these aside, there's a good free class schedule (one of these weeks, I'm going to wake up on time from Cycle class on Saturday or Sunday morning), generally short to no waits for machines, History Channel on the treadmills, and trainers who leave you alone and don't try to push anything on you. And that alone is relief enough to keep going here. read more

I do not wear shorts to the gym with the words "JUICY, PINK, sorority letters, etc." across my ass. I do not put on make up or do my hair before I workout. Nor do I go to the gym to pick up guys, talk on my cell phone, or read the latest issue of USWeekly. If you fit the description above, do not come here. This gym is about as no-frills as it gets. It's hot as balls in the workout area, and it could definitely get some new, updated equipment. There are a handful of treadmills and ellipticals and basic free weights and machines. Hardly anybody wipes down the machines after sweating all over it, which is absolutely disgusting but whatev...I just wipe it down before and after. There are many things that can be improved at this Y, but it is what it is...and it's just fine for me. Their fees are on a sliding scale depending on how much $$ you make, and it's super affordable...way cheaper than any other gym around. if anyone's interested in pick-up basketball or v-ball...let me know read more

I am going on year 2 of my membership here and I must say I really like this place. It is unpretentious (wanna work out in jeans and a button down? You found your home!), clean, and has ample machines and equipment to help the average gal get her fitness on. The locker rooms are simple and clean, you have a few showers and a steam room for sweating out the sodium and booze leftover from the night before. The classes are friendly and fun and have good variety, and the equipment is modern and varied. I give an A for the racquetball courts (nice bonus) and plenty of parking. Was here today ( a warm summer Sunday around 1p-3p) and my sister and I had our run of the weight machines. Good bang for your buck if you aren't into fitness as a fashion statement!! read more

YES. i am a fan. if im at a party, and i could even REMOTELY tie in the ongoing conversation to something YMCA-related, i go for it. and then i end up having to edit myself and move on to something else. because once i get started about this place, i can't stop. A. It's sooooo effing close. i live not even a mile away from it. the thing about this ymca is that it is totally tucked away, so i didn't know about it for a long time, unfortunately. but hey- you live in logan square for exactly that challenge of finding hidden gems, right? B. It's clean and modern. The equipment isn't falling apart (like it is at the Irving Park YMCA). It also doesn't smell like, in particular, stale marijuana (like it does at the Irving Park YMCA). C. And this is the best part: They use an income-based sliding scale to determine how much you pay a month. THIS IS BRILLIANT, PEOPLE. you bring in a copy of your w2 from the previous year, and based off those numbers, they come up with a plan for you. I'm not going to say how much I pay, but I WILL tell you that I pay close to $25 less a month, compared to other gyms around the area. D. They have a ton of free programming from spinning to different types of yoga. I personally haven't taken any classes yet, but intend to sometime in the near future. E. Their commit to be fit (I think that's what it's called) program. I'm not sure exactly what the details are, look it up online if you're interested. But you get a free trainer who works with you to develop a work out routine for the first 6 weeks, I think. Awesome! If you're into that sort of thing. F. The people that go there are very cool and relaxed. I love it. You'll see a lot of guys in jeans and plaid button down shirts, lifting more than I ever will in my lifetime. A very unpretentious joint, unlike.... Cheetah Gym (So I've heard). G. Large parking lot! Even though I could take the bus to this place, sometimes driving is much more convenient. Especially cuz the parking lot here is big and safe. So as you can see, I have a ton to say about this place. Not five stars because it doesn't have a pool. But you can still use your membership to go to other Y's around the area that do have pools to make up for this. Another thing: this is a humble establishment. So even though they have ENOUGH equipment- they don't have an overabundance. Which means that if you go during peak hours (after work on weekdays, early mornings on the weekends), you may have to wait for a machine. That's about it. I love this place. read more

In the most segregated city in the United States, Chicago, there is the Logan Square YMCA . This place puts the C into community. Its multicultural, multigenerational, multincome, multibody size, and every body gets along. The only draw back, are the ubiquitous TVs. They even have them on the treadmills. But if the idiot box gets people to the gym, I guess its better than TVs at bars. Personally I only use the free weights, but I do love being able to play a game of 32 with the young kids in the hood. It keeps me on my toes and its just plain fun. Its also cool to see the same kids (looking tough on the streets), recognize each other from the courts and nod and smile, again community. And the staff are just amazing. If you work a 9-5 during the week and have limited patience when it comes to bullshit, you've been warned about the Logan YMCA.... From January through the beginning of April, this place is super packed with New Year's Resolutioners and it is impossible to find a machine between 5:30 and Close. What's worse is, finding a free machine, going to find some cleaner and paper towels because the clients here don't clean up after themselves and there are no designated staff members to clean in between machine users, so you come back with the cleaner and someone else has jumped on the (dirty) machine and you're stuck waiting for another 30-45 minutes. There are also screaming children running around unattended at all times while their parents are in class and/or are working out on the treadmill. There is no pool, there are no towels, no security in the locker rooms to ensure your towel isn't stolen while you're in the shower, etc. You definitely get what you pay for - but this place is about $20 per month too expensive for what you actually get. I was a member for 2.5 years but just got tired of the consistently increasing prices, stuff being swiped during my showers, and long waits for dirty machines. I'd 100% come back if they only stopped the kleptomaniacs. read more

The workout area is pretty bare-bones and feels a bit grungy, but it's enough to complete most workouts. If you're looking to do Olympic lifts, you'll have to make do with bench press bars set up on the ground; the lack of a dedicated area to perform Olympic lifts is the biggest downside of McCormick Tribune YMCA. There's also no pool, but that's advertised when you sign up. While I haven't used them yet, the basketball and racquetball court areas are nice, and they always have classes going. The staff and people who come here are all friendly, which is a huge plus. read more

The YMCA is sort of like the dive bar of gyms. I mean that in the best way possible. You've got to understand, the last gym I belonged to was David Barton (only because I worked in the building). Sure it was nice, pretty, had Bumble & Bumble products in the locker room (that I never used). But it also had a slew of vain gym rats, who hogged all of the free weights, spent far too much time in front of the mirror, walked around buck ass nekkid in the locker room (sorry I'm a bit more modest), and a "DJ" whose "unts-ss-unts-ss-unts-ss" beats were impossible to tune out even while wearing headphones. At the time I didn't mind, but now I realize that I just didn't belong there. I'm not saying the Y isn't nice. It is. With all of the new improvements, it's even nicer. What I like most about it is that everyone there is more relaxed - not looking to hook up, wearing old tshirts and sweats, and not cute little matching Lululemon outfits or cleavage-revealing sports bras. Going back to my "dive bar" analogy - everyone's there for one reason: to feel better. They offer this "ActiveTrax" program which, after meeting with a trainer, assesses your physical state and then creates custom workouts you can print out at a kiosk in the exercise room. It's pretty neat, and completely free. I haven't taken any classes yet, but they're free for members! You can also take advantage of the "Away" program, which allows you to work out at ANY of the YMCA locations in the city, and plenty out of state, too! The membership fee is moderate ($42/mo) but if you make less than $45k a year, it's based on your income! Can you beat that?! read more

As others have mentioned, this is not a place to see and be seen. This is a place where you can feel comfortable working out because the clientele runs the gamut. I've seen guys lifting weights while holding babies and others wearing construction boots and jeans here. It's the opposite of a pretentious and expensive "health club." The equipment failure rate has improved as of late; they've done a better job of fixing them it seems. I go in early, before work; so I never really have to wait for machines. It's a bit dirty and dingy in the exercise room but the shower / locker and common areas are clean enough. A BIG plus is the raquetball court, and you can watch some pretty intense basketball games in the gym while you're at it. Plenty of free classes that I have yet to partake in. It's too bad it doesn't have a pool (i'd actually prefer towels to a pool, but that's probably also too expensive) and it is a pain to get to but the staff are really nice, and for a no-frills and low-key facility you can't beat the Y - the price is right too. Don't expect to hit on girls or see celebs here and you'll enjoy it as much as I do. read more

Like someone who sleeps around because they don't like themselves, I've been around the block when it comes to working out cos I hate it. I have to alternate and switch it up between the Lakeview and McCormick Trib Y, the Bar Method and Dailey Method Studios. McCormick Trib Y is my fav because they have addictive and challenging classes, I can do cardio afterward on treadmills w/interval training programming. It's clean and modern while still being economical. It's also not the kinda place where girls get dressed up and paint on their faces to work out. it's no xsport. Try Muscle Sculpt on Saturdays to get toned and versed w/the latest hits. Trish has a gift for pairing challenging reps to the just the right song even if it's what I thought at the time, "Sets are on fire" by Kings of Leon. The mirrors in the Aerobics room are also floor to ceiling w/no breaks or distortion so you can check yourself (before you wreck yourself). read more

Did you know you can take Pilates and other classes here without being a member? For members, it's $15 for a quarter but it only goes up to $30 for a non-member. That is a great deal for 3 months of Pilates twice a week! There are other great classes too! I've been happy with my membership and I'm hoping more people will join (so that initiatives like putting in a pool and keeping the wide range of classes keep on going). I've been gym shy ever since I stopped going to Women's Workout World, where members (prisoners?) shat on the locker room floor with impunity. In January, after becoming winded after a rousing rendition of Head Shoulders Knees and Toes with a group of children, I suddenly remembered that when I first moved to my current apartment (in 2008) one of the deciding factors was its close proximity to the YMCA. It only took me five years to finally go and become a member. I like the no frills, no fuss ambience of the place, and I like supporting an institution that positively impacts my community. And everyone's bowel control thus far has been impeccable. I'll continue to sweat away on the faux hills of their treadmill machines for many a day, I'm sure. read more

I like working out here, its so much less crowded than the Rauner family YMCA and it was open today while rauner was closed until the middle of next week! Whats up with that! I don't mind that the machines are a little older than most but i find myself comparing it to the rauner ones, the rauner ones are much newer and they have flat screens and the windows face a huge soccer field. This gym doesn't have all that, it's just a gym to workout at and sweat. I prefer it because its less packed, i've never waited for a machine and because everybody is there just to work out, no one is competing for ateention, they could all care less. Its ideal! I only have ever utilized the Head Start Daycare, After-school and Summer Camp Programs at this YMCA. I remember when I a 7th grader in Ames Middle School I came to the ground breaking ceremony of this YMCA. That was over 10 years ago and the location, is still super clean and well maintained. I applied for the Head Start Daycare Program for my son when he was 3 yrs old, based on a referral from a friend. The application process is done through Ms. Elsa, and she is very nice and helpful to work with. My son was able to start the next day and he loved it. He was sent home with homework and different projects all the time. The children are fed well balanced and nutritious meals and they provide the kids with toothbrushes and ensure the children wash their hands several times daily. There is a small gated playground attached to the classrooms that are strictly for the children only. After 1 yr in Head Start, my son graduated from the program and was prepared for Kindergarten. He learned how to spell his name, write his numbers to 100 and many other important skills to take with him in his new journey of education. The YMCA set up a lovely graduation party with a jumping castle and other fun activities. Now my older son is a 1st grade honor roll student and my younger son is now attending YMCA Head Start in his big brothers old classroom. YMCA is amazing I recommend it to any parent who needs a daycare that actually cares to enrich and stimulate the minds of children in order to better prepare them for the future. read more

I have a friend that says, "I work out at the Y, the Y is the People's gym." He goes to Bally's now but I like his quote. Immaculately clean, super friendly staff, a mix of clientele, state of the art machinery, a variety of free and fee based classes, perfect climate, spacious, good for kids, good for adults, good for teens, good for me. The free weights and weight machines are superb. My only recommendation is to install more sanitizing stations, especially one or two closer to the free weights. I am going to have to give up my membership to this Y and start to attend a gym as well. It pains me to say this, for I believe am part of the People more than part of the others. But I am moving and the drive or bus trip or bike ride to this Y will be too long. Goodbye dear friends at McCormick, I will really miss you. :( read more
