I am extremely happy I enrolled my daughter to this swimming school. She had her 1st free class prior to Covid shut down. I was a little sad but I'm glad they opened back up and they are taking all social distancing measures very serious. I feel pretty save and my daughter's teacher is amazing with her! Thanks Kendal for having the patience to teach my daughter!

I'm a retired swim and water polo coach and am extremely picky about how my sons learn to swim. Goldfish has blown away my expectations with their amazing staff and developmentally focused swim curriculum! I can't imagine having my boys learn anywhere else and the staff have always been so friendly and helpful. The whole facility is always clean and I especially love the progress reports they provide so that you know how your child is advancing in their swim skills.

This place is awesome and so much fun! All of the staff are solely concerned with the safety and well-being of your child. The amenities are clean and well stocked. In between swim classes there is a little congestion with access to changing rooms, but a surprisingly ordered line forms and moves quickly. If you have questions, staff or other patrons are happy to help you. We will be back!

Facility is brand new. Everything is cater to kids - individual changing rooms, water temperature is always at 90 degree, kid-size potty.... etc. Perfect place to take my four-year-old boy to learn swimming. My husband has fun swimming with my little guy, too!

Which, that happens, I get it, but it was the staff response to that situation that completely turned me off from Big Blue altogether. No one on staff seemed to notice we were instructor-less and we were left awkwardly waiting by ourselves. When we asked what happened, why they failed to notice, and what they were going do to rectify the situation... the answer was incredibly underwhelming. No responsibility or apology was given. I quote, the front desk staff person said "well we have a lot going on, what do you expect us to do?" That response made me see red, because there are plenty of staff standing around the pool deck messing around on iPads. I ended up talking to a supervisor, who refused to give a refund but offered a class credit... which we never used.... So thanks I guess? The whole exchange left a bad taste in my mouth so we stopped going and just forfeited our money for the rest of the session since my daughter never really seemed to have a good time going to swim lessons anyways due to the high instructor turn over and the fact that they really pushed her to go underwater without a parent holding her... so not sure what toddler would be comfortable with that, so it just shows that the instructors aren't really familiar with tailoring swimming lessons with children's developmental levels. I sent a complaint to corporate via email, and called and left a message but no one got back to me. Ironically, I'm getting non stop marketing emails and texts despite unsubscribing multiple times... so that seems appropriate...This issue happened about a year ago at this point, and I still feel weird about it. If they were too busy to notice an instructor didn't show up to teach class, I'd hate for them to be too busy to notice if a kid is struggling in the pool or a kid needs help for any reason. This strikes me as a corporate facility designed to get as many kids in and out of the pool asap. Don't expect to have any customer service issues made right by this location, they just want your money.

The infant/1yr old trial calls for a parent/guardian to be in the water with their baby which is a sweet way to bond. We ended up holding off on enrolling him for no specific reason but once he turned three we knew we shouldn't put it off any longer. We returned for weekly lessons and it's been really great to have something for him to do during the winter and we especially love how warm they keep the water & the entire pool area. The teachers have all been really enthusiastic and patient with our rambunctious 3 year old. There are benches in close proximity to the pool so parents can be nearby, but there are windows surrounding the pool and plenty of seating for parents to sit outside the pool area (which can get pretty warm). The facilities have spacious changing rooms, showers and hair dryers which is a nice touch! I would definitely recommend this place for any kiddos in need of lessons .

My one issue is the billing department. I pay 75$ a month to have a membership here, and when I got a knee injury that required crutches and a massive heavy metal brace around my leg, my Doctor told me I was not allowed to work out until I was cleared by her as I might need surgery. This did not warrant a good enough reason for them to let me cancel my membership (because I can still do arm workouts according to them). During my four month recovery I was still charged a 15$ fee instead of the entire amount. Then, when I'm finally cleared and ready to get back to the gym my monthly membership charge declined, and I immediately noticed and put enough money in my account to pay for it. To my surprise the next day I got a charge for $98 instead of $75, and when I called they said their reasoning was because there's a service fee if they have to run your card again. A $23 dollar random fee is insane. This company is too focused on making as much money as they can off of each person who joins and honestly I won't be renewing my membership when it's time.

Someone is always leaving at the exact moment you arrive, and the two of you engage in a polite yet awkward standoff over who will hold the door. One of you finally relents and slips through, and just like that, the first small irritation of the day has landed - forgettable on its own, but the first of many. By the time you leave, they'll have accumulated, and you'll walk out slightly worse off than when you arrived, unsure exactly why. Next comes the card scanner. There is a self-scan device on the counter, and you will try earnestly, hopefully, to get it to work. It rarely does. But not never, and that's the problem. If it never worked, they might be forced to fix it. But because it flickers to life just often enough, they don't. So you stand there, twisting your card around like an idiot, while the staff -who've watched this same futile ritual unfold thousands of times - eventually wheel their chair over and press a button on top. This, too, rarely works on the first try. You both fiddle . Smile nervously. You both pretend it isn't ridiculous. Finally, you're through. Next is the locker-room, which is carpeted- an ideal environment for mold, bacteria, and athletes foot fungus. To reach it, you'll navigate a cramped zigzag chute that I've come to think of as the "butt funnel" - a design that ensures those entering and those exiting will collide in the tightest possible space. Once inside, you're greeted not by open space but by a bench placed directly in the entryway, flanked by lockers. This leaves you weaving through a maze of naked limbs and gym bags just to get in. Then comes the locker hunt. There is no system - no visual indicator of a locker being unused, no light, no logic. You must walk the perimeter, trying each one in sequence. Locked. Locked. Locked. Locked. Locked. Open. By this time, much of your desire to workout, which you had just a brief time ago, has diminishd significantly. Upstairs, unless you've come during workday hours, you'll find the place packed. Not just busy - packed. Every machine is in use, often with someone standing nearby, waiting. You'll find people on the floor, doing pushups or crunches in the narrow spaces between equipment. There's no rhythm, no flow - just bodies everywhere. oh, and forget going late in the evening - they reduced their hours significantly after Covid and then never opened them back up (almost certainly because they realized it increased their profit margin to not have to pay the staff). And the atmosphere - this is harder to define, but you'll feel it. It's not unfriendly exactly, just... off. No one talks. No one makes eye contact. I'm not looking to make friends at the gym, but I can't shake the sense that something in the bones of this place is just wrong. It takes more than it gives and it's hard to put your finger on why. When your workout is over, you descend through the same gauntlet of hell on your way out, a staff member will mumble a required, monotone farewell in your direction without looking up - a forced practice that you know is equally as painful for them as it is you . You'll hold the door for the next person as they awkwardly try to hold it for you. And you'll step back out onto Diversey having completed your workout. Technically, you've gained something - but it won't feel that way. Why, you ask, do I continue to attend this godforsaken place? Because it the only gym in the neighborhood - and I, like so many others around here, don't have a car in Chicago. Therefore I will continue to attend - losing something every time I go. Something hard to name - a little wellbeing, a little peace. A little of myself.

My children and I were appalled by how staff treated an elderly resident with an obvious physical disability affecting his arm and mobility. He was denied permission for a non-resident to help carry his belongings upstairs, which raised serious concerns about both safety and basic compassion. The non resident man informed the ill mannered woman that the man he was assisting had cancer. Who denies a cancer patient assistance ? It was upsetting for my children to witness this lack of empathy, and they immediately asked not to be left there. Situations like this are not only unsafe for vulnerable residents but also send the wrong message to families. The YMCA should take responsibility and ensure its housing management demonstrates greater care and respect for individuals with severe disabilities--denying reasonable assistance could lead to preventable harm. If elderly disabled residents are not safe who is? Not our impressionable young children, and we certainly do not wish to leave our children in places to learn such behaviors.
