UPDATED REVIEW: I originally left Chris a very poor review for multiple reasons. Mainly, the lack of communication after my judgment was delivered. I had to call repeatedly for multiple weeks to get documentation that I was promised. I got a call from him, directly, the day after I reviewed his firm. He asked what he could do to make it right with me. The only thing I wanted was the documentation that he promised me during his representation of me. Chris delivered later that day. Not only did he deliver on what he said he would do, he also went above and beyond and offered me an additional service for later, should I need it. I contracted these guys to take care of an expired registration ticket. Tomorrow is my court date, first thing in the morning, and I cannot get in touch with them to help me take care of this! I am supposed to send them my copy of my new registration and a payment of $100. I've called the number listed on their google website over and over again, and each time I call, they answer and then immediately hang up on me. My emails are unanswered. My calls are intentionally being ignored. Legal matters aren't a game, and I am going through a MAJOR hassle because of this. From the moment I first spoke to Mr. Powers over the phone and explained my case, I could tell that he knew his stuff. He told me the good, the bad, and the ugly about what I should expect. I was really confident going in that Chris McCartan and his team could provide sound legal assistance based on a solid referral from a friend who had recently used Bill Powers in a DUI case and received a favorable verdict given the evidence against him I was by no means expecting a miracle and couldn't compare one case to the other but didn't really expect to be treated as badly as I was considering the situation. I initially met with Chris for close to an hour, talked through the scenario and went over a few options. I was new to all this and nervous about how things could turn out but Chris made me feel comfortable, at ease and was very good at convincing me he was the right guy for the job....I felt like I was a priority in his book of business and was on board with having him represent me. Then came time for the court date... I received nothing from his office giving me instructions on what to do or how to proceed with showing up to the courthouse the day of the hearing. You guys can judge me all you want but I had never been in trouble prior to this and thought this was what I was paying for. I had to call Chris' office numerous times the day of my 9am court appearance before anyone decided to pick up and when someone finally did she was very rude and not willing to help at all. Once I was in the courtroom, Chris simply acknowledged my presence and continued the case. This happened on 3 other separate occasions following that and considering what I know now, that's pretty normal. What I noticed though in those visits was the stack of files that Chris was holding and how many people he was ultimately representing. I bring this up because the next time, the 4th and final time I was in the Cabarrus County courthouse under the representation of Chris McCartan, was one of the worst and most telling. I had met with this guy on numerous occasions beforehand and really felt like he cared and had a grasp on my case. In the courtroom, I was sitting no less than an arm's length away from Chris (the exact spot I had sat every single time before) and when he got there he made eye contact and acknowledged me like it meant something. However, when my name was called, Chris stood up and started looking around the room for me saying my name and acting like he didn't see me. I quickly recognized what was going on and spoke up to let the D.A. know I was actually present and Chris acted like he knew all along and gave me a wink and a nod and moved forward with little regard. It was then I realized I was dealing someone who either didn't care or had too big of a workload to truly understand the levity of what this meant to me each of his clients for that matter. To further the frustration, right before we went in front of the judge, he asked me where I worked and what I did which told me he hadn't bothered to look at my file prior to that moment or else he would've seen that information which was readily available and had been discussed in earlier meetings. To sum it up, I'm not a hater and I'm sure this guy has done some good things in his career but please be wary of him when considering lawyers. My case was tough and like I said in the beginning, I wasn't expecting any miracles. I simply hoped for a level of general respect that just wasn't there considering the money I paid and thought it prudent to post this review. I don't like that certain reviews are left out and not counted as part of the overall rating! If it were we wouldn't have made the mistake of hiring Mr. McCartan! He did absolutely NOTHING for my wife and charged waaay too much to do it! Another attorney told us after the hearing that "she got a raw deal" and that had we hired her instead it would have only costed us a 4th of what Mr. McCartan charged us and "the outcome would have been very much different". He just had my wife plead guilty and didn't even speak to us about the details of the case. The only info he had was what the actual charge was, and that she gave him on the phone call when she hired him, right before he took our money! After he was paid there was NO COMMUNICATION! (not even at the hearing!) Which is why we began to consult another attorney out in the hall in the first place. We felt like just another number to him and felt that the end result that we received was exactly where it was headed! We should have walked away then.. There was sufficient evidence that could have warranted a Not Guilty verdict or Dismissal that he didn't even mention to the judge!!! Who's side is he on? Does he work for the state? This guy is an arrogant jerk who acted like we were a bother to represent, after he got paid. Before he takes your money he will be nice and act as though he will help you by saying "Don't worry, I know some tricks" and Yes, he does! He tricked us right out of our money! This dude should not be practicing law. There are multiple reviews on other sites as well saying similar things about his incompetence, but they are hidden, does the Lawfirm pay to keep it that way..? I know a lot of the positive reviews on Avvo seemed like he wrote them himself or paid someone to do it to make him look good, you can just tell that he's trying to 'sell himself'. Not only did we receive inadequate legal council, we also just found out that not only did the office Mr McCartan fail to get ANY of the charges my wife was charged with removed when 1 of the charges was false due to the medicine that was found on my wife was mine and I was with her with my pill bottle in the car but we also just found out last night that out that the citation that she was given when we were originally pulled over was not rolled into the charge like we were told it would be. So now not only will we have to pay a fine (which would have been fine, we didn't mind paying what the court system requires) but we now have to pay the DMV a restoration fee. So a 50 dollar find has now gone up to nearly 500 additional dollars when it is all said and done. His office won't communicate with us, no phone call, no emails, no letters in the mail nothing. If they would contact us, we wouldn't be in this spot and I would be fine with providing a positive review. read more

Though Powers McCartan was able to afford me what was likely the minimum sentence possible, I do not feel I was given the highest level attention one might expect when retaining someone for their affairs. For one, I was never granted the ability to sit down and discuss my case with my actual lawyer, apart from my phone consultation, but rather upon my scheduled meeting I discussed the case in greater detail with a proxy. While my visit and conference were pleasant, it still would have been nice to talk to the person handling my case. It's never a good feeling to show up the day of your final court date and finally be introduced, and hope all of the facts had been relayed to him with the utmost confidence. When your lawyer asks you to raise your hand so that he knows who you are, one begins to wonder how valuable your business actually was. What made it even more bizarre, is upon our brief meeting in the lobby that day, he kept referring to "our talk" (I assume from me meeting with the proxy) - which indeed never really happened in the "our" sense. Could I have received a better result had my worries been originally granted satisfaction? I do not know. I do know that when it came time, my lawyer was deliberate and concise in asking the court to have mercy on my situation, which I feel they did. I would ask that Powers McCartan take more time in the "piece of mind" department, and perhaps focus a little more on quality rather than quantity. I also realize, that they are in the business to make money as well. They certainly received mine. We contacted this law firm because of all the great reviews for Mr Powers. However, since the violation was in Cabarrus County, Chris McCartan was assigned to my daughters case. In the beginning, Mr McCartan returned her phone calls, however, after the initial consultation, he never returns her calls. She is very young (19) and would like answers to some questions, but she gets the feeling he doesn't care! His paralegals always say they will have him return her call, but that never happens. I'm guessig since the bill has been paid in full, that Mr McCartan feels his job is done? So, if in Cabarrus County, my advice would be to find another attorney! read more

Not terrible but not great either. They did manage to get my red light ticket reduced but that was after all kinds of miscommunications on their part. I was told different stories each time I called and never had ANY luck getting an attorney on the phone. I would request a call back and had no luck. The receptionist is not exactly the nicest. When I called upset about getting charged when I was told I would not be charged until the service was complete... because that made me feel like they would actually complete my case... she was pretty rude. I paid Mr. McCartan to represent me for a DWI. He told me he could get it reduced. However, he treated me just like one of his free clients. In Free in terms of paid by the state. I received the same judgment as the others who do not pay over 2K for his service. I still have a DWI on my record and I am on probation. You are better off getting a court appointed attorney than to trust this guy. read more

You're treated like a friend until the first consultation, then its impossible to get in contact with him until your actual court dates. Also told me we had a 90% chance of getting everything dropped then at the final court date, at the last possible minute, during trail he told me we would take a plea. Here's what I got for $900.....The worst representation ever!!! The only thing their good at is selling their service! I was promised they could "get me off" as there are many loopholes in this law, The word "Swiss cheese" was thrown around. I agreed and was reassured everything would go smoothly. I was given the option of coming into the office or having a teleconference to discuss the case. I was a little concerned when I was told the earliest time available was just two days before my court date. I guess its a good thing I chose the later as it was scheduled for 1:30 and they didn't call until 4:30. This was after several calls to their office where each time I was reassured he would call "soon". Because I chose the teleconference I didn't even know what my attorney looked like and didn't meet him until a few minutes before going before the judge, I didn't even know he was there! After all this I was horrified to see that I could have done a better job myself. I don't know how bozos like this pass the BAR, much less stay in business. read more
