On a drive outwith the City Centre, I came across this garden centre, situated about 10-15 minutes away. Somewhat ashamedly, I kinda like garden centres (70 year old woman alert!) and this one was very pleasant. The choice is really wide and varied in here; soil, plants, gifts and even a cafe make up a really good garden centre which I would love to visit again when I had a bit more time. We stopped for a wee bite to eat in the cafe, and it was really great! The best, best, best thing about garden centres are the cakes. They are always home made and jam packed with, well, jam and cream and all the good things that are bad for you! Cue me struggling to carry the weight of thee biggest meringue I have ever seen! It was absolutely fantastic and I tried my hardest to finish it but I couldn't! I really like the idea of the high teas too, which are served in The Orchard Cafe on Thursdays between 4.30 and 6.30pm, it all sounds very quaint and twinset and pearls-esque to me! Having a wee look at the plants! Didn't buy anything, which in itself is a miracle! I love the plant choice no matter what time of year it is, they seem to have something to fill my garden! They also have a cafe but I haven't sampled anything yet ...! read more

Mayshade have a good selection of healthy plants and stock everything for your gardening needs. The Big Secret is how great their cafe is - we were there last weekend to buy some pots and decided to have lunch. We had the fresh soup (choice of three) with their home-made bread followed by locally-made pies with salad. It's just a shame we had no room left to taste their variety of home-baking - next time we will buy scones or cakes to bring home! read more
