This is a bronze sculpture by artists Jeff Varilla, and Ana Koh Varilla, the Koh-Varilla Guild . It was made in 2014 and was cast in a New Mexico foundry. It depicts William H. Hudnut III, former Mayor of Indianapolis, sitting casually on a granite bench with his legs crossed wearing a tie, but no jacket. Hudnut himself chose to be depicted sitting on a bench rather than standing, "to communicate his connection to his constituents rather than being seen as a politician or statesman as represented by many other politician sculptures. It fittingly sits outside of Hudnut Commons and welcomes visitors to the area.
The funding for the statue came from donations by Colts owner Jim Irsay, Pacers Sports & Entertainment, and Hudnut's Second Presbyterian Church.
Mayor Bill served as Mayor of the city from 1976 - 1992 and some of his accomplishments included: development of the $300 million Circle Centre complex, the negotiations to bring the Colts to Indianapolis from Baltimore, and the construction of the 36-story OneAmerica Tower, and the development of $157 million worth of sports venue in the city. He passed away in 2016 and the age of 84.
The sculpture is very life like, I mean very, very life like, and in low lighting may be mistaken for a real live person. It is made to scale. The sculptors actually measured Mayor Bill for the sculpture so that the proportions would be as accurate as possible.
There is a lot of metered street parking available right in front of the statute, but you could probably get away with just doing a drive by and getting a good look by slow rolling past it. FYI, It is located near many restaurants and bars
Well, as is the case with most public art that I review, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. It is probably best to plan out additional stops and make it part of a larger itinerary of some of the many downtown attractions to maximize your trip. read more
