I was…read moreplanning to schedule a new patient appointment with Dr. Michael Bernu, the center's founder and clinical director. In the process I learned that he keeps the entire $1,200 fee, which is paid in advance, if a patient cancels with less than 3 business days' notice. Now I understand that his time (like his patients' time) is valuable, and some people may not show up or cancel at the last minute. In such cases a reasonable cancellation fee may be appropriate, but to keep the entire $1,200 fee for doing nothing is disappointing and does not, in my opinion, reflect well on his character. In his new patient paperwork explaining this policy, there is no provision for returning all or a portion of those funds if a different patient can be scheduled for that time, nor is consideration given for emergencies. So, he could keep $1,200 fee and charge someone else another $1,200 for the same time slot, pocketing $2,400 for a 3-hour consultation. When I found out about this policy, I lost interest in seeing him and decided to look elsewhere for my healthcare needs.

I saw Tamera Pace for a general "check up" - she was so friendly and sweet and put me at ease. Blood work, EKG, etc. was all easy and timely. He once sat and listened to me cry -- pouring my guts out -- while handing me tissues. He never once rushed me or pushed me out of the office. THAT is unheard of, but that's how he is. I don't know if I am doing this correctly, but I would honestly advise against using Sterling. I made an appointment months in advance because I was struggling with depression and wanted to pursue getting antidepressant medication in addition to diet, exercise, and therapy. I confirmed my appointment two days in advance, signed my forms digitally, and was glad about getting help for my condition. They responded to my confirmation with an additional message, so my confirmation was confirmed. Thirty minutes before my appointment, they let me know it had been cancelled. I called the office to ask why, and perhaps reschedule. I get it. Sometimes physicians get sick or have a family emergency. That would have been totally okay and I could have done the appointment another time. The receptionist pretty rudely informed me that my would-be psychiatrist quit a month ago, and that she was no longer with Sterling. I told her that was a bit confusing for me as the patient, because they still confirmed my appointment. She responded to this negatively as well, and when I asked about scheduling with another physician, she said that would be not likely or not possible because Sterling only has one psychiatrist and he is far too booked up. I really needed help with my depression, and I wish that Sterling hadn't given me what was basically a fake appointment. I also wish they weren't so rude when I was following up looking for care. If I had known my physician quit, or that the appointment wasn't happening, I could have gotten treatment somewhere else. Now, I am still in need of medical advice regarding my depression, but I'll likely have to wait a few more weeks to get advice somewhere else while my condition worsens. I can't speak for every physician or every patient experience, and I am sure that Sterling has some great physicians and patients with great experiences. However, my experience was pretty bad. My advice would be to either get psychiatric care somewhere else, or to pick up the phone and call to confirm appointments, because they'll apparently mislead you about availability and confirmation through both text and email. But, it is Dr. Kurzynske who makes one feel like a real person with real value with real issues. He listens attentively, probes to ascertain issues, is not rebuffed by questions, and makes his patients feel like they've been heard and receiving the best medical attention and actions that a primary care physician could offer. He is knowledgeable and trusted to be current in that knowledge. He views patients as whole persons, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Has no medical knowledge or recommendations when asked. Women in the office are all overweight and rude except for one. Save yourself the headache and do not go here.
