This is not my idea of a book store. It's more of a storage area. You cannot walk around very easily because of the mess and also the male employee will follow your every move being very invasive. He is not interested in selling anything but mass produced paperbacks you can find cheap online. I finally just bought one to be polite and leave but realize now that he desecrated the book with a ink stamp of his shops logo. This is a big pet peeve of mine. I can't stand when people de-value items by writing their name or store info on the inside pages of a perfectly new book. It's not very intelligent behavior marking up something that you bought online. I should of just bought it online myself for cheaper and Brand New un marked condition! read more

This place is a metaphysical or spiritual bookstore with some random used books. In addition to books on religion and the occult, they have a selection of tarot cards, crystals, incense, and other spiritual items. This store is not a place for kids. There are no children's books, and the books are haphazardly stacked dangerously high. Another reviewer described the store layout as "looks like a library exploded" or possibly hit by a tornado. Most items appear not to have a price, and prices seem to be generated spontaneously by the owner on the spot. My own experience was that his quoted prices were very high, but perhaps some feel they are paying for this kind of experience. The owner is an outgoing charismatic character who appears to create the ambiance reflected in his items within the shop. This shop is an excellent place if this appeals to you and you're looking for this vibe. Some people rate this store very highly for this interaction and experience. Owner is a creep. He's very touchy with beautiful women. If you call him out for crossing boundaries he becomes defensive and gaslights you. I never went back after my experience with him crossing his boundary. He said he was just placing his hands on pressure points and I was making a big deal about it. It's messy, only broadly organized, and very difficult to traverse. The owner will follow you around and comment on each item you pick up. I found this to be obnoxious and played dumb just so he'd get bored with me and leave me alone. My SO was told he was retrieving books off of a shelf incorrectly (at 45 years old with multiple college degrees, mind you). The tarot cards are priced at the checkout counter, so if you like surprises, this may be the place for you. I value transparency and a reliable pricing structure (if it's marked that way, that's the price) so I did not appreciate the surprise aspect of this. All in all, the selection is great if you're into occult books, but you'll be stalked around the store, so don't expect to be able to actually look at anything without needing to have a conversation about it. Want to look at the decks? They're behind several statues. While I did find some interesting books, I ended up finding free PDFs of the same books online. Beware! The store owner is a Con Artist! My experience with this store will be my last. first off the owner Robert Thibodeau is very touchy feely to an uncomfortable level of hugging! Everytine I would find something to buy that was priced- he would take it and search for the product on the internet and find it with a higher price and then change the price higher claiming it's out of print now so he has to higher it. He claims he can do that since he has a small handwritten post it note on his desk that says prices can change at register. I watched him sell a common piece of Amber the size of a dime to an unknowing customer and tell her it was very rare and it was $75 regularly but she could buy it for $35 - it's $5-$10 to purchase at most. He told me I could buy his book for$24 from him at a deal beachside it was $1000 on Amazon. literally everything I found he just makes it up as he goes along! He uses some sort of phone metaphysical intelligence to manipulate you and tell you what you "need" so he can sell you certain items he is promoting. His hygiene is also disgusting and the store is a fire hazard. you will be preyed on and ripped off! stay away! read more

Robert, the owner, chastised me for picking things up and looking at things and setting them back down while shopping. He said I was "acting like a child, just picking things up and setting them back down for no reason" and I was like wtf? The place is a mess, nothing is priced and if you ask Robert how much things are, he gets annoyed. Owner Robert thinks he's a know-it-all but that's hardly the case. The Mayflower is a book shop located in downtown Berkley on 12 Mile Road just west of Coolidge Road. I have been to the Mayflower bookstore several times looking for Tarot cards. If you're looking for a deck of Tarot cards or a specific metaphysical or spiritual book, I bet the Mayflower has it. However, I don't know if you'd be able to find it. To be blunt, the bookstore is kind of a disaster. I don't know how you find anything in this store. Allegedly the books are grouped together, but I don't know the system. The shelves are close together and crammed full of books. The bookshelves are the wrong size so the books are actually shelved two to three books deep, which makes it impossible to find anything. Once when I was there I tried to look at some books and when I put them back they kept falling off the shelf because the shelf was so full and jam-packed. The owner had the audacity to come over and scold me for dropping books because it could damage them. At the same excursion, my friend bought some stuff and paid with a credit card and his receipt was hand written on a post-it note. From my experience with the owner and the staff they seem to be very knowledgeable and very interested in the products they sell. They are overall friendly and as helpful as possible. If you're looking for a specific book or deck of Tarot cards, then I suggest you try the Mayflower. It's probably there, but it may take a while to find it. read more

This quirky and odd bookstore has been here as long as I can remember. If. Looking for new age, occult, metaphysical, or spiritual materials such as incense or tarot cards, it's a great place. The owner is pretty well know nationeidecas an expert. And while I am not an expert or follower of any of these things, every time I have been in there, they have happily given me assistance and never made me feel somehow stupid or uninformed. I do like each time I drop in, and am glad that independent, nitch, places like this still are open and doing well. read more

I call it intimate, welcoming, and a rare expression of genius. The owner, Mr Thibideau created and lives in this Potteresque world of arcane knowledge and wisdom. It is a miracle that such a place exists today. If this environment makes you uncomfortable, or the owner seems abrupt, it might be that the effort it takes to achieve wisdom brings frustrations too intense for the searcher looking for shortcuts. This bookstore is a rare gem which should be absorbed slowly. If your day is too busy and your life too hectic, neither this bookstore or the tomes within are for you. This place is ok if you know exactly what you are looking for and they can help you find it. If you are looking just to browse then good luck. Like the other person said everything is sloppy looking and not easy to find. To quote my Freiburg during a visit "it looks like a library exploded in here". Years ago after a fire I thought they would make it better and more user friendly. I was wrong it is just as bad if not worse now. Staff is helpful and willing to discuss/give advice but with all the chaos in here it is hard to want to come back. I asked Robert to do my chart and his interpretation was spot on regarding my past, present, and I'll let you know at a later date the future of my chart. I'm a Tarot reader and was looking for a new deck of cards and a few books to enhance my knowledge. Before I could tell Robert the path I wanted to know more about, he placed a book on Zen and Zen cards into my hands. I have been reading since I was thirteen but this was the area I wanted to study. I've been going to Mayflower now for decades, since the mid 70s when it was located elsewhere. My search has been for Sanskrit language texts, grammars, dual-language readers, dictionaries and the like. And yes, with some patience and some guiding the shaman owner with what exactly I needed, we connected. Only he knows where things can be found! While there seems to be no order to the place, and while wandering among buddhas and crystals one slips back into an older time, the experience can be rewarding I found by just letting Robert guide you. An hour or two can easily slip by with just you and the owner, talking, comparing and delving around. Robert pushes your mind: have you heard of this? Read this? Seen this? Every time I visit, I say to myself, "Now, only 15-20 minutes, no more!" and then I look at my watch, and 2-3 hours has gone by!! LOL! Why?! Because it's spiritually intoxicating in this place (even though it's small compared to Border's etc.), like you drank the Soma of the Gods and got lost in a beautiful garden of spiritual delights. I cannot recommend this book store to anyone. It is extremely unorganized & crowded. Walking around the store is a challenge for even the most nimble customer. Books are stacked on the ground and can topple over at a moments noticd. The staff is not friendly and the owner is very pushy. When searching for a book, I was yelled at and told that each one I touch must be put back in the same exact place--how is that possible when I must clear four stacks just to get to the bookshelf. The crystals and accessories are overpriced. However, this place does have a great variety of tarot cards-- if they'll let you look at them. I don't know how this store stays in business as they aren't customer service friendly. I will never go back. read more
