During the Civil War's East Tennessee campaign it was almost burned down like other confederate supply buildings in the area. But it's claim to fame is that it was saved thanks to the passing of secret Masonic signs by the son of the mill's founder and union soldiers. Yup. Oh those good ol' ever-intriguing freemasons. Much of the damage you see now is due to age and actually to arsonist fire in the 1990s, apparently. Still, it's not much to look at. You'll have to use some imagination here. I wouldn't make this your primary destination or anything, but if you are in the area, this is worth a look.

Old Gray was founded in 1850 and is a classic example of the "park" style of cemetery, much like Hollywood in Richmond or Auburn near Boston. Starting with the beautiful entrance on Broadway, you need to also spot the classic stone wall perimeter. Note that the Knoxville National Cemetery has a separate entrance. Wow...this is a gorgeous old cemetery...I would say that this is a perfect example of Victorian Garden Cemeteries full of statues and amazing tombstones. We found the cemetery vary easily with our GPS app on my android phone. It is located beside the National Cemetery full of Army graves. They are uniform but still lovely in their own right. The old Gray Cemetery is surround by a stone wall with gates and wrought iron, a perfect example of Victorian artwork. We strolled through the park/cemetery enjoying the setting and the artwork of the statues. There was some homeless people relaxing in the shade of the coolness of the trees and tombstones. It was a little alarming and scary at first but we tried to keep away from them. I never like to be alone with people/ strangers in a setting where I am vulnerable. Some of my favorites were the statues of the ladies. They are sad and yet romantic. Does anyone ever go walking in these beautiful cemeteries like I do? I love the setting of these parks and find them very peaceful.
