No kidding, don't let the gas station vibes throw you, this place has great eats. We walked in through the gas station part of the building and were surprised to see the rustic decor of a medium sized dining area and an adjacent bar. It was a pretty full dining room and we sat ourselves. It didn't look promising as we saw one waitress and one bartender. However, after a brief wait, the waitress came to our table and assured us she would return as quickly as possible to get our drink and food orders. She returned as promised. Our drinks arrived a short time later. They were well made and attention was paid to get us another round as we finished the first. Our table had ribs, prime rib and a French dip sandwich. The portion size was great and the food arrived hot. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and the sauce was tasty. The prime rib had great flavor, was prepared as ordered and had very little fat. The French dip was also tasty. Truth be told, a salad bar would make this a true five star rating. The salads served with the meal were nice but very run-of-the-mill. Will we go back in the future? You betcha!

Reservations were at 6 and we were seated right away. Our waitress was promptly at our table and was excellent throughout. I wish I remembered her name. I ordered the Scallops Pernod which is an anise liqueur. It is made with coriander, star anise and mint so it does have an unusual taste but I've had it before but our waitress made sure I was aware of the flavor as she didn't want me to order something I wouldn't have liked. It was FANTASTIC! My mouth is watering think about it. There were plenty of good sized scallops with a Pernod and mushroom cream sauce over linguine. To die for! My friend had the walleye piccata and she said it was also fantastic. The restaurant itself is not terribly big so you could actually talk without yelling. It was decorated in the typical Northwoods style and was very comfortable. I would recommend Chef Rene's 100% although it is a little on the pricier side it is well worth it. Go there you won't be disappointed!

Some of the best steaks I've had were right here versus others within a 60 mile radius. This trip I had the lamb chops which were excellent. Also a double baked and we had escargot. I wish the location was was not connected to a hotel and was stand alone but I find this establishment to be in the top 3 in the North Woods

We stopped at Rhinelander Family Restaurant for lunch on May 29, 2026. My wife and I both ordered…read morethe turkey wrap, but what we received was not what was advertised on the menu. The menu photo clearly shows a wrap made with sliced deli turkey, while ours contained cubed chicken and had been grilled. When my wife politely asked the waitress about the discrepancy, she immediately became defensive. She went back to the kitchen and returned saying that because turkey wraps are rarely ordered, they use cubed chicken instead. My wife explained that this was not what we had ordered and that the menu photo showed something completely different. As the waitress walked away, she responded with, "Turkey is turkey." She even told us it was the chicken they used in the chicken dumplings soup they were serving that day. A $33.10 meal we barely touched. My wife also pointed out that the wrap shown in the menu wasn't grilled, while ours was. The waitress replied, "Well, that's how things stay together in the wrap." The conversation continued to deteriorate, and when my wife requested to speak with a manager, the waitress responded, "I doubt she'll care either, just like me." What made this experience especially disappointing is that I had eaten dinner here a couple of weeks ago while attending an event in the area. At that time, both the food and service were excellent. Unfortunately, the poor attitude, lack of professionalism, and unwillingness to address a legitimate concern during this visit completely overshadowed the positive experience I had previously. I understand that mistakes happen, but customer service and respectful communication go a long way. Sadly, this visit left us with a very negative impression.
