Dropped our bags at the bag drop and headed into the pro shop to check in. Staff was friendly and accommodating to our foursome. Had reservations, but said we could head out early if we wanted. Headed to the starter with bags already on our carts with water and ice in the small coolers on the carts. Carts are equipped with GPS - no scorecards provided. We played the South Course after warming up on the unlimited "range ball" driving range. Greens were recently "punched" (wasn't aware of this when booking our round). Needless to say, putting was a challenge, but the course was in epic condition and the views are worth every bit of the green fees. The track is laid out around the lava field with narrow landing spots on some of the holes. Accuracy off the tee box helps when playing here. If you play golf on the Big Island, this is a must play at least once. read more

Played the south course with my son mid April and had one of my best golf experiences ever! The course was beautiful and in impeccable condition. The views were breathtaking along the ocean and the contrasting black volcanic rocks with the lush green fairways made our day memorable. The best part or the course is the awesome staff, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We had a mix up on tee times (my error) but the staff made sure we were able to play and have a memorable outing. Highly recommend this course! read more

Skip this resort if you have the ability to do so... I realize "island time," is the mentality in Hawai'i... but when you are here on a business /luxury trip time is of the essence so it's a -happy- medium... the crew was slow, tired, rude at the check in desk one older American (did not appear to be from Hawai'i I could be wrong) woman in particular who's name I wish I would have taken... whom if you called for services from your room was just RUDE STARYT TO FINISH. The Food was ~AWFUL~ the glasses in the room filthy as check them before using, baby cockroaches in the area where coffee & fridge & addl glasses are kept, even those were filthy & their lousy turn down service was local bottled water in bottles I'm sure from the sinks I realize it's great water... But something in a closed container would have been ideal after SSEEVVEERRAALL DIRTY GLASSES IN ROOM WITH FOOD Particles of some sort... I scraped off with my fingernail, no local macadamia, coconut, mango, passion fruit, pineapple anything on your pillow... This might have been a 5 star hotel years ago...But sadly, the service for what you pay is TERRIBLE!!! If you can stay elsewhere DO!!!! Got 5 takeaway sandwiches for the guys and was charged auto gratuity of 20%. I get it, resort course so the food is expensive, but paying $30 tip to reheat something in 7 minutes is excessive. Called to inquire about the charge and was given a simple explanation that it's company policy. When I said ok, but told her I thought it was excessive, she responded with, "Why, who's this?!" Here's what you need to know: made a reservation by calling in to the golf course. I was quoted a price (approx $250) for a round of golf with rental Clubs for the next morning and was even told this was an exclusive price for persons residing on the property. I set my clock for 6Aam, got ready and showed up at the golf course and they advised that the price was dynamic and if fact I was incorrectly advised over the phone. Indeed they quoted me a price of $370. They did offer to adjust the price a little by doing me a favor and it would still be 20% more than what I was quoted. They never offered to actually hold true to the quoted rate. I was also told that their answering service must have made the reservation and therefore quoted the wrong price. How is that the golfer's issue??? I was pretty disappointed for the inconvenience and incompetence and decided to cancel and went up to Mauna Kea Golf course instead which offered excellent service and was rated higher. Very poor customer service at Mauna Lani. I will NOT be returning to this club. read more

36 hole championship facility with breathtaking views of the island mountains and the ocean. Tucked between razor sharp lava fields this lush green extremely expensive thing of beauty is every bit of challenge you could imagine. Undulating greens with slow pits against the grain and extremely fast puts with the grain make the greens a tough challenge. The long lush fairways are flanked by homes as well as the lava fields. The island grass gives you challenges you never expected. It props up the ball only to reveal a deep cushion way below what your mind expects at impact. Great ball strikers will have an amazing round. Duffers with have amazing stories and the best photos to remember the challenge of both the north and south courses. For a more relaxing laid back challenge, check out the par three nine hole Wiki wiki course. It will really sharpen your short game skills. Play it a few times in a row to get the local know knowledge. The carts are so amazingly comfortable. The gps unit connect to you phone to play all you favorite songs while to enjoy the vistas and the links. Other than the huge price this is five stars. Have fun! They also will rent you or sell you anything you forgot to bring to the island. Locals an resort guests get a discounted round. Juniors play free in the late afternoons. We played the South course and loved all the scenic views! The front 9 had a few water carries, and the back 9 ran along the ocean. I had a hard time concentrating on golf, there was so much to see! We saw a school of large long jumping fish (aha aha? Ono?) right off the shore, my husband almost hit a flock of nene (our only birdie on this course), and each hole was perfectly manicured, the greens well maintained. The real golfers will tell you to play the North course. If you're like us and just want to play resort golf while you're on vacation, this is the course. Every hole is picture worthy. I've played other ocean Par 3 holes, but the 15th here is my absolute favorite hole. Watch out for the lava hazzards, you go into those and you'll either lose your ball or gain negative yardage when your ball bounces behind you! read more

Upon arrival straight from the airport, we were warmly greeted by the staff and made to feel very welcomed. We were there for a practice round (daughters were signed up for the USGA Girls Amateur qualifier there on the North course) so they gave us a great price for both the juniors and the adults! Surprisingly, we were the only ones there! We had their awesome practice facilities and the entire course all to ourselves! Beautifully maintained course from tees to greens. Nice ocean views from a couple holes. Some holes with large trees to negotiate, but pretty straightforward layout otherwise. Interesting item of note was that there were really thick swarms of tiny bugs on the front nine. We had to cover our faces with towels to protect our eyes and our shirts were covered with dozens of tiny gnats. Pro shop was pretty large and well stocked. EVERYONE was super friendly. We had a great time and finished in about 4 hours (including 30 minutes at the range to warm up). read more

My husband and I were distraught when we heard the Plantation course at Kapalua would be closed for renovation during our honeymoon. As an avid golfer, my husband wanted to get in at least one round during our trip. When Mauna Lani was recommended to us we had high hopes, and this place did not disappoint. The views are unbeatable! You ride along the coastline for almost every hole and the course itself is built on authentic lava rock. Excellent neighbor island golf resort that offers an affordable Kamaaina rate. This review is for the North Course. This is the tougher of the two layouts. This 18 holes, while built on ancient lava flows, does offer some elevation changes. You must hit your drive in the middle of the fairway, any leaks to the left or the right and you will be penalized. The Salam Seashore Paspalum rough will grab your club, if you can find the ball. I was amazed at how deep the ball will sink in this stuff. The North Course cuts through a Kiawe forest and had a bit more of a parkland feel to it. Lava outcroppings do come into play from many of the tees. Service: Excellent... from check in to finishing up at the end of the round all of the employees were very attentive. Condition of the course: Excellent....for those of us who live and golf in Hawaii, the best conditioned courses can be found on the neighbor islands. Pace: Done in a little over 4 hours. Price: Good Kamaaina pricing for 18 holes. It's best to get on their e-mail list for the latest offers. This is the second time that I have played at Mauna Lani. I previously played the South Course, which has a resort/ocean-side look and feel. This is the easier of the two courses. I would likely play the North Course again. Great course for the price. South course rests along the ocean, and the North course goes toward the inland. South course is fairly straight, but windy. Holes along the ocean are beautiful. Stop and take that memorable picture. It seems like the architect put more thought in the North course. Most of the holes are surrounded by lava. There are plenty of dog-legs and elevated greens. It's much more challenging than the South course, and in my opinion, more fun to play. The staff is very friendly, and the course is well taken care of. read more

Played the south course for my first round. Attentive staff. Fantastic driving range and practice greens. They let you pull your carts right up to the range tee box on grass!! Very different from east coast u.s. Forgiving fairways with lava rock danger in just the right places. 2 jaw dropping pacific ocean water holes. Traffic tends to back up here as the Asian golfers take tons of photos. Stereotypical??? Yes, but true. I played as a single and finished the front 9 in less than 70 minutes. Back 9 had traffic from slow playing older couples. Still finished the round in 3.25 hours!! Being able to drive the cart anywhere on the course makes the round fly by !! Spectacular conditions. I've played here a number of times and never get tired of playing here. This is the best course I've ever played at. The greens and fairways are well kept and offer some of the most scenic holes in the U.S. bar-none. Playing the South Course is the reason you play golf. Considering the green fees (just north of $100/person) is a bargain when you consider everything you're getting. Highly recommend checking the forecast as it is always windy in the afternoons. Better off playing in the morning as to avoid the winds. If you are vacationing on the Big Island, Mauna Lani better be at the top of your list of courses to play at. read more

This golf course is among some of the prettiest and most valuable real-estate I've ever had the pleasure of viewing let alone play on. The few opportunities I have had to stay at this resort were absolute blessings. Ive been very lucky to stay at a Condo that lines the links, specifically a condo that overlooks the south shore's hole #15, which is arguably the most striking and impressive over water hole ever, and is probably the most photographed golf hole of all time. Treat the opportunity to play here with great importance, and make sure to really take in the entirety of this beautiful place. Both courses are equally challenging. The holes are flanked by sharp lava flow rocks that will devour your ball instantly. Also just as abundant are the salt water hazards. Two highlights of the courses include North Shore's signature 17th par 3 where the player must drop his elevated tee shot down into a lava amphitheater surrounding the green. It is a stunning and challenging landscape. The other is South Shore's hole #15 is just an absolute treat. Climb up the rocks to a tee box plateau and drive over the cove! Take your camera with you, because this is also one of the most beautiful spots on the island. I could stand on that box just drooling for hours. Bottom line: This place should be on any golfers bucket list, its not overrated, and the naturally striking landscape along the Pacific is hypnotizing. read more

Review is for: South course Had a great time playing this course. Fairways are big and forgiving. The lava rocks on either the right or left are not... but you really have to hit a bad shot to go that far awry. Not too many sand traps (as compared to Mauna Kea that had lots of sand traps and most of them surrounding and protecting the greens). Not too many water holes... happy to say I didn't lose any balls to water. I lost one in the lava rocks tho on a super errant shot. oops. The fairways, tee boxes and greens were in really nice shape.... most areas it is like vacuumed carpet. Mind you the rough is ... rough... in that the grass is sticky and will grab at your club so keep a firm grip and follow through. The greens keepers really take pride in their work and it shows. One even offered to take pictures for us. :) Super nice guys... all of them said Hi or waved. Good course for someone who isn't very good (for instance, ME)... meaning you won't get beat up too bad by the course if you don't hit long or occasionally hit it off your mark. Not as much character as the North course, but still really fun. There are a couple of beautiful holes along the water. Hopefully you aren't being pushed by the folks behind you and you can take a beat to enjoy the scenery. However, with that said... don't keep the group behind you waiting. Looking forward to our next trip back to play this course again and North (which we didn't play on this trip but have in the past.) Both courses are all-time favorites of mine. I really like Reflection Bay in Vegas and get to play that a few times a year and enjoy getting my ass kicked by Rio Secco at least once year... so these 2 Mauna Lani courses are Tops in my book. :) read more

Now this is a classic beauty Hawaiian golf course. Staff was very friendly. Treats you like you're welcome and not a tourist. Fast service. Nice desk folks, very gracious starter, look for Felix. I really liked him. Course is immaculate. I played the South course, challenging but not crazy. Course is fairly open and very scenic but there is wind. I e played 4 courses while here, this was my favorite. The Waikola courses are OK but doesn't compare in service and maintenance. They could take some lessons from the Mauna Lani folks. read more

Few things to note before I go into my review. I played the North course and the major reason that i gave this a 4/5 was because the yardage markers on the course were awful and it was extremely frustrating to find out how far away you were. We got to the course around 7 am, just me and my dad, and our goal was to get done so that he could get back for his meeting by 1030 and they starter and the guy who helped us with our bags promised us we could get done in that amount of time. But the way we play when we are on our own with an open course in front of us is not like most do, i think we usually make our way around the course in 2 and a half house, for example if we both hit shitty well pick a mutual place in the fairway to drop and if we hit shitty again well go to the next hole. Also, case we play a skins game if someone hits it in the water or duffs it the other will concede...or if one player (like I did) pops the ball straight up in the air and it lands in the divot mark and he cant find it since the chunk of grass is laying on top of it...he will concede and hang his head in shame lol. but back to the course. This has to be one of the most well kept and maintained courses on the island, and whats amazing is that they let you drive all over it, even up to the green if you want, and still the course is perfectly green and virtually no brown marks. also, i don't know how they do it but they mow the green so that almost every put is straight, or very very little break if any!! The course track is beautiful, it cuts up into the mountains and through the laval, and then around hole 8 and 9 it cuts down to the ocean, but every hole is different and poses a different challenge for each type of player. The course really was carved out of the laval and its a cool feature, cause if you stray away to far right or left and the gods are on your side it can save you big time. The par 3's on this course are a lot of fun too, most are an elevated green and all of them have great backdrops...17, my favorite hole, is a par 3 that is like hitting into a canyon of laval and a perfectly manicured green. Wayne S. put it best, every hole is amazing it its own right and picture worthy. The only gripe I have about this course is that they only have 1 yardage marker that is easy to see, its a big stole on each hole that reads 150 on it, but there is nothing for 100, 200, 250 anywhere on the course. As for the sprinkler head markers, they are super hard to find and are about the size of a flat baseball, so we spent a majority of our time trying to find them, which any golfer out there can tell you kills any mojo your round has. Also, i know this may not be a huge deal to someone playing golf, but the snack cart has hot dogs on it, and to top it off they are on Hawaiian sweet bread rolls! I know its a very minor detail, but her when you pair that with a great day of golf, a bag of maui chips, and an arnold palmer...you cant ask for much more in life. One last thing, whoever designed the course has a very sick sense of humor, on a number of the holes there are big trees about 150 yards away from the green (or to put it better exactly where your drive will go) so if you can avoid it your golden and hope that you partner hits the tree and you can laugh :). read more

Only played the south course, but man, was it a beauty! The photos for this course do not do the in-person experience justice. If you ever make it to the big island for golf, this should be your destination! First off, the service at this place is stellar. I really enjoyed the welcoming environment from every staff member, not just the director (whom I did get to meet, what a nice guy)! My family and I didn't want to lug our clubs with the rest of our luggage so we rented a few sets. The clubs were in great shape and came with a couple sleeves of balls. At $60 a set, I wouldn't expect less, though. When we started no one was in front or behind us (although a couple twosomes caught up to us in the middle). Everything on the island is so laid back. No starter, no marshall, you're probably not going to be paired up even if you're a single. At times this can be a bad thing, but for the day we were out, it was so relaxing! As far as the course, it is pretty challenging and long. There are the stunning, over-the-water holes that make it seem like a very advanced course, but as long as you're out to have fun you'll be fine. Lastly, I would advise to beware the bugs/flies. The carts don't have windshields and I left the 18th with a few in my hair and face. Keep swinging. read more

Two great courses at the Mauna Lani resort. The North is more inland and the South borders the sea. I've played both and they are ridiculously nice. The courses sit atop the lava flows which really add to the setting. The green of the courses contrast so nicely to the black lava and crystal clear blue waters around you. The South's signature 15th hole is a par three where you hit the tee shot over the Pacific. The 17th on the North course is a par three where you hit into a type of lava amphitheater. They have locker rooms, bar, restaurant, putting greens, pro shop and driving range. They used to play the senior skins game here and these are top notch courses. Save yourself some money by packaging rounds at the courses with your stay at the resort. We always do the pick your passion package, which includes unlimited golf. Beautiful courses, but I'm still the same hacker. Double turd! read more

The South Course on Mauna Lani was not in great condition. It was in better condition on previous visits. The fairways were not cut well and tons of grass clippings were left on the fairways. The Bermuda rough was unrelenting and this was right next to the fairways. There are some great views on holes 14, 15, and 16. With a calm wind, there were more PAR opportunities here on this day. The pace of play here was slow they were having a Kamaaina special and all the locals were out there. read more

The south course is an amazing, scenic resort style course with ocean views. The course is in immaculate condition and you have the freedom to drive your cart almost anywhere, something I have never seen prior to this. When I golfed it was CRAZY windy, so you might want to look at the weather prior to deciding when you golf. The only negatives were the lack of GPS, which is not really acceptable when you pay around $150 for a resort style course and the potential slow play of people gawking at the beautiful views. read more

We played the north course and had so much fun! We missed our tee time due to a crash on the highway and the staff couldn't have been more understanding and accommodating when we finally made it. The north course was in spectacular shape and not so challenging as to scare away novices (the south course was closed for maintenance). The carts are super cush and we played our favorite music on the blue-tooth enabled system. We were starving after a sitting in traffic and were disappointed there was no food on property- which was shocking for such a high end place. But, there was a lovely Cart Person who was very friendly, but we bought the one sandwich she had and it was terrible. At least she had cold beer. We would have given this a five if not for the missing food and beverage at the clubhouse. read more
