I have been buying American antiques at Northeast Auctions for 25 years. There are so many things…read morethat I like about it, as a business, that I must corall my thoughts. But as I reflect, I realize that it pretty much all comes down to Ronnie Bourgeault, who is an extremely knowledgeable, energetic, verbose, serious, sometimes grumpy, generous, philanthropic and good hearted man. He is highly respected in the field for being one of/the most antiques-knowledgeable auctioneers, and is well known by and connected to all the major collectors, dealers and museums who have encountered him in the ~ 45 years he has been in the antiques business. Because of his national reputation, he is chosen to sell major collections from CA to NY., so as a buyer, I don't have to travel far to see and examine some of the best material out there. Bourgeault's headquarters is a landmark for 'downtown' Portsmouth, an elegant early 19th c. 3 story brick Federal mansion that is a cornerstone for this uniquely well preserved historic shipping port. Throughout his many years in Portsmouth, he has consciously and quietly purchased and restored a number of early buildings with shaky futures. That means alot to me. He is also an active donor and board member for both local and regional museums and historic organizations of national importance. Bourgeault and his loyal staff run a very smooth professional operation. His auctions are always well attended ; the August one that kicks off N.H.Antiques Week is often where you will see the premier collections being sold. Americana is Bourgeault's focus but his Asian sales are also highly regarded. Both printed and web catalogues are well organized , written, and photographed. My one warning is that if you are new to the auction world, you might want to start by attending other auctions that cater more to newbies by being a bit more user-friendly. In keeping with his 'no nonsense' approach, Bourgeault is probably the fastest auctioneer in New England (at least), often selling 100 lots per hour (where other auctioneers might sell 60-80 lots per hour.) That speed alone takes some getting used to ; there's little room for hesitation, or you may easily be left in the dust! The world of antiques and auctions is a fascinating one and bringing history into your life can be fun, educational and richly rewarding. If and when you decide to take on that goal, Northeast Auctions is a top notch business to work with.

I recently bought custom-made twin xl bunk beds from Maine Bunk Beds for my five year old twins. I…read morefound the company after hours and hours of internet research, trying to find bunk beds that (a) would last long enough for my kids to use until they leave my house, (b) could be separated into two beds, and (c) wouldn't off-gas a toxic brew of VOCs into my kids' room. I am not disappointed. To the contrary, I feel pretty happy about having dropped essentially two grand on bunk beds. The fact of the matter is that these beds are extraordinarily well-made, and my five year olds have just gone from their toddler beds to the last beds I will ever buy them. Jim and others with the company were awesome during the process and answered my incessant questions without letting on that I was being annoying: 1) Can't you deliver it in three weeks instead of eight? Their birthday is coming up. (No. Custom made, duh.) 2) Can you paint the bunks two different colors? (Yes) 3) What is under the mattress? Is it toxic, formaldehyde-laced plywood? (No, it's the eco-friendly, soy-glue version of plywood.) 4) Is it strong enough to hold the heavy latex mattresses I'm going to buy? (Yes, holds 300 lbs!) And so I bought the beds, and I laid out the extra TWENTY!? bucks to have someone assemble them in my house. (That was a Christmas special I think, but worth $100 or more in time and headache savings.) The beds are here now, and they are just as great as advertised. It's hard to get quality like this.

The sink had to be ordered and was supposed to be delivered to our house. A week went by and we still hadn't heard so I called the store. They said they had it in the back ready for us to pickup, otherwise we would have to wait until Monday to have it delivered. We wanted to have the weekend to install it so we said that my husband would come and pick it up. He drove 40 minutes to the store only to find out that it had been put on the truck. When I called to ask about when it would be delivered and if they could do anything to help make up for the mishap, the guy on the phone didn't apologize. He offered the drivers name and number, but said they wouldn't do anything more than that. He was rude and tried to place part of the blame on us for the "miscommunication". What really bothers me is that he didn't even apologize. We will never go back or recommend this place.

I was told it would be ready for pickup today. I heard nothing this morning, so I called and asked for an update. I was told they had "no idea" when the truck would show up but they would call back. Several hours later, they called back and said the truck never arrived and I will not be receiving my order until at least the 20th, a full week and a half later than promised. When I called back to cancel my order, I was blown off and told that I would receive a call back momentarily. I'm still waiting. While I've been waiting, I've found a mattress for $280 less at Macy's and will be cancelling my order with Mattress Firm and they will never see my business again. Update: I finally gave up waiting and called the store back. Don acted like he hadn't heard from me, and then when I asked AGAIN for a cancellation, he immediately became testy, told me he was "going to handle it after he finished helping his customers" (apparently I'm not a customer?) and when I stated that he had told me that almost an hour ago and I had not received a call back, he started all but yelling at me about how he had already set up the cancellation (which he did not indicate the first time we spoke). I informed him that it had BETTER be done today and he said he will email a copy of the cancellation confirmation, so we'll see. If this is not resolved by the end of the business day, I will be paying this store a visit tomorrow.
