After 2 months of my son being taught the same objectives, I got some results stating that he scored 6 questions better in math and 2 questions worse in reading than he did on his baseline test when he first enrolled. There was no explanation about why he scored the way he did and also no reassurance on a plan for his future objectives. That's when we decided to withdraw him. Tushar Kumar, the director, who was nowhere to be seen the entire 2 months while my son was enrolled, suddenly wanted to meet with us to convince us to stay. After several refusals, he finally relented. However, he stalled for several weeks before actually sending us a refund of the unused hours. Then when we finally got the check, he said he took out $250 as an early withdrawal fee. This fee is nowhere in the contract I signed so I consider that money stolen and I told him so. At that point, he demanded the check to be returned because he was insulted. I will be taking this business to small claims court. If you care about your child's learning, I urge you to take your child somewhere else. And Tushar, if you try to dispute this claim, I will update this post with a picture of the contract as well as all of our email communications over the last few weeks.

I should have realized she was a charlatan when she refused to show me samples of the program she uses. (I wasn't even allowed to see the computer room.) Conversely, going to this program has significantly LOWERED my child's grades because it consumes almost 2 hours immediately after school M-Th, leaving little time or energy for my child to do real school work. Ms. Macaluso only works between 3-6, M-Th. There have been at least 3 other similar students who started at the same time as mine, all 3 dropped out within the first month because it is a time suck and didn't even begin to help. In comparing the "scores" with the those students, the other students had almost the same scores with the same basic information. Even students in elementary had similar scores as students in high school. In the initial meeting about the Reading Lab program, she presented herself as a doctor/psychologist. Now, after searching online, I don't see any such credentials, although she closely associates herself with doctors on her website. This helps explain why she does not accept credit cards even though she charges a huge amount. In summary - save yourself the time, the money, and frustration. This doesn't help students, it's just them sitting in front of a video game for an hour.

We gladly turned to Ms. Macaluco to see if she could help turn around my son's deficiencies to help him succeed past high school. Within 6 months, my son took an interest in reading and we knew we were on the right track. Now, 3 years later, my son is on his way to Abilene Christian College and this would never have happened without the help of The Reading Lab and Ms. Macaluso. My son worked hard but Ms. Macaluso was committed to helping him open new doors to his education.

Not only in terms of grades and ACT scores but how they treat each of their students as family. The tutors are amazing at what they do and make sure the students really understand the material. As a dual-credit student I took some challenging college classes and they taught me better than some seasoned professors. Mr. Alan personally meets with all his students and takes interest in what their goals are- be it college choice, grades, or SAT test scores- and helps make it happen. He makes sure they are pushed to excel in the areas they need to be, not just sit and breeze by the work. I'm very thankful for the experience I had here and I wish all of them well.
