It has been extremely easy to schedule tutoring for college level classes (currently receiving tutoring for 2 subjects). They are flexible, and they always try to provide a tutor that works around my son's class schedule. My son has had the same tutor throughout numerous tutoring sessions, thereby providing continuity in his studies. My son really enjoys the sessions, and he really feels it's worthwhile; the tutor has been extremely knowledgeable in his subjects. His grades have really improved. We strongly recommend Lighthouse Tutoring!

Interesting past reviews here on the Texas Tech University page, but I can read between the lines…read moreand just hope others can too. But this college in the dusty Panhandle town of Lubbock, Texas, ain't so bad as the low rated reviews say. It is NOT a big city. Bigger than most towns within 340 miles or so, but it's still got that small town vibe. My daughters' doctor and many other really good doctors in this vicinity studied and/or graduated from TTU. I have taken family members to Texas Tech health care facilities all over Lubbock. The staff members' compassion and competence have meant the world to me. I didn't attend Tech for a reason. I had the chance, but I didn't want to go to the same damn school as everyone else from my high school. Lol. I also didn't see the point in spending the tons of money since I knew I wouldn't be getting a full scholarship. My uncle graduated from here, though, and played baseball. Wreck 'Em! I have been here for all kinds of events and most recently my two young daughters and I walked across the campus during the day and then later on the night of April 25, 2026. The campus was well-lit in most areas. My daughter who is in seventh grade is already expressing interest in this place to become a vet. She has a while to go, but they are already pushing the college degree plan in her school. We'll see... The Red Raider mascot is one of the most unique in the country. There are traditions here. Sound ones. Good ones. It's not an ivy league... lololol, Klara K. (review from 7.25.2017). Oh man, that was funny. College is meant for meaningful degrees for significant work. Tech delivers on that. The only set back I have about it is the parking. That's most colleges. I get it. But what a pain that I don't miss.

All her advisors have been rude, and react as though they are being bothered! This has been the biggest disappointment at Texas Tech! For the cost of tuition, they should screen for better advisors!

If you're looking for real instruction, meaningful progress, or actual teaching tailored to your…read morechild's needs, this is not it. What Sylvan sells is the illusion of help--slick marketing, buzzwords, and glossy promises--without the substance to back it up. The most infuriating part? Many of the tutors are certified teachers--professionals with training, experience, and the ability to actually teach. Yet they are not allowed to teach. They're restricted to following rigid scripts and overseeing computer-based programs, rather than delivering direct instruction or using their expertise to meet students where they are. Even worse, tutors are not provided with the tools, flexibility, or autonomy to differentiate instruction. No individualized lesson design. No meaningful adaptation for learning gaps, disabilities, or attention needs. No targeted remediation. Kids with vastly different needs are pushed through the same generic content, regardless of whether it's effective--or appropriate. Instead of teaching, students spend most of their time clicking through pre-packaged software and worksheets that could easily be accessed at home for free. Staff supervise screens rather than instruct minds. Calling this "tutoring" is generous at best. Progress reports are vague, inflated, and self-congratulatory, but measurable growth is rare. Skills don't generalize. Gaps don't close. Confidence doesn't improve. Yet families are encouraged to keep paying, keep enrolling, and keep believing that progress is just around the corner. This model is especially harmful for students who actually need support--children with learning gaps, dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning differences. These students require explicit, structured, differentiated instruction delivered by skilled educators. Sylvan offers none of that, despite employing people who could--if they were allowed to. The cost is staggering for what families receive. Thousands of dollars for supervised screen time, canned curriculum, and restricted professionals who are prevented from doing their jobs. In short, Sylvan Learning Centers prioritizes enrollment and retention over real educational outcomes It looks impressive from the outside, but once you're in, it becomes painfully clear: this is not teaching. It's a business model built on hope, not results.

I arrived today at 11:15 and the doors of the testing center were locked, the lights were out, and…read moreno one was present. There was not a note indicating that the testing center was closed and the only "sign" was a clock sign that said "sorry be back at 2:30". I waited until 11:30 and still no one from the tested center showed up to administer my test. I quickly called ETS (Educational Testing Service) through the number provided on my admission ticket and explained the situation. I waited until 1PM and no one from the testing center showed up. I was eventually informed by ETS that my test had been canceled. I was not notified by e-mail or phone by the testing center at all that the testing center would be closed. I was not even notified by the testing center that my test had been canceled, I had to go through an ETS supervisor to find out what was even going on. I am severely disappointed in this service. I sat in a parking lot for 2 hours, wasted a day I could have been teaching in my school, and now have to find a totally separate day to take off and plan for a sub in order for me to retake my exam. I even went back to the testing center a little past 2:30 hoping to talk to someone and get an explanation but no one was there despite what the sign on the door had indicated. I was not given 24 hours' notice like I was supposed to be given indicating that my testing center was closed. The testing center wasn't even listed on the website as closed; it just wasn't open. Even right now, 5 hours after my appointment, I have still not heard from the testing center - I have received all of my information from the ETS hotline. Hopefully I will never have to use this testing service again.
