Interesting past reviews here on the Texas Tech University page, but I can read between the lines and just hope others can too. But this college in the dusty Panhandle town of Lubbock, Texas, ain't so bad as the low rated reviews say. It is NOT a big city. Bigger than most towns within 340 miles or so, but it's still got that small town vibe. My daughters' doctor and many other really good doctors in this vicinity studied and/or graduated from TTU. I have taken family members to Texas Tech health care facilities all over Lubbock. The staff members' compassion and competence have meant the world to me. I didn't attend Tech for a reason. I had the chance, but I didn't want to go to the same damn school as everyone else from my high school. Lol. I also didn't see the point in spending the tons of money since I knew I wouldn't be getting a full scholarship. My uncle graduated from here, though, and played baseball. Wreck 'Em! I have been here for all kinds of events and most recently my two young daughters and I walked across the campus during the day and then later on the night of April 25, 2026. The campus was well-lit in most areas. My daughter who is in seventh grade is already expressing interest in this place to become a vet. She has a while to go, but they are already pushing the college degree plan in her school. We'll see... The Red Raider mascot is one of the most unique in the country. There are traditions here. Sound ones. Good ones. It's not an ivy league... lololol, Klara K. (review from 7.25.2017). Oh man, that was funny. College is meant for meaningful degrees for significant work. Texas Tech needs to monitor their advisors! My daughter has not had a positive experience with any of her advisors. if you are an advisor, you have a critical job to provide some guidance and support to students. All her advisors have been rude, and react as though they are being bothered! This has been the biggest disappointment at Texas Tech! For the cost of tuition, they should screen for better advisors! read more

It's a long not smooth drive from D/FW area...Once we got there on a Saturday at 8:30am, I expected a very EXCITING welcome like when you tour LSU, especially since there was over 300 people/families present...NOPE...we just sat QUIETLY and ALONE for 30 mins, no presentation, no music, nothing...we was given plastic bags at arrival to carry around campus on a hot summer day (100 degrees) not backpacks like they give you at Baylor, Texas A&M, LSU and OU. They also gave us luke warm Dasani bottled water vs. ice cold as they told us it was going to be 100 degrees for the 2 hours we are in the heat. Ok, that wasn't it..we did not enter ANY of the academics buildings. stating that it was because it was a saturday and they were locked!! WELL UNLOCK them when you know you have 300 people coming from Dallas, Houston, New Mexico and California to TOUR!!! This was VERY disheartening...Don't keep us in the heat and talk to us about how NICE the honors college is with a chic fila and Starbucks or about the largest classroom but we can't see it...not when we JUST left Texas A&M and they toured us INSIDE 11 of their academic buildings on a SATURDAY in the cool air-conditioned seats and talked to us about their college of medicine, etc...and we had to drive farther to get here! Then, we only saw ONE dorm OPTION...NO WAY!!...we wanted to see at least 3 when you have over 8 or give us a map to tour off-campus apts as an alternative (like they do at TA&MU)...and the campus needs at least 1000 more trees on it...it looks very dry and desolate.. The kids (tourist) and the buildings were clean. Unless you are alumni kids or just love the color RED, I don't see the appeal personally...College Station is a nicer city, San Marcos is prettier, Austin is weirder (lol), Waco is smaller, Houston is more appealing and Dallas is classier so it comes down to legacy obviously.. read more

Texas Tech University - my daughter and niece - Colleges & Universities Near Me - Lubbock, Texas

(Disclaimer: this review is solely based upon my personal experience from first sight looking in due to a campus tour. Just a prospective student here.) After touring a couple of Texas universities this summer I figured why not add Texas Tech to my list, yeah it may be a 9 hour drive out from Houston, but the fact that this school number one major is kinesiology and my major is kinesiology why not? Plus, they have a law, graduate and medical all on one campus you can't get better than that. Upon arriving, we were welcomed by the most beautiful university that I've seen in the state aside from private universities. All I could see was the exquisite architecture from Spanish century with terra cotta roofs. Luscious plants all around a waterwall in the center and the tall flags. We stopped at the visitors parking booth to ask where we should park and a student with a red shirt directed us where to park behind the West Hall building. He had a nonchalant attitude about himself and wasn't at all friendly--he kept on telling us that he didn't know if we could park there or not. -West Hall is the place to go for prospective student campus tours. As we walked in we were greeted by more individuals wearing the red and black red raiders colors. I knew right there they had lots of school spirit here. Although, again they were standoffish friendly individuals. They were able to sign me up to get started. Then, we walked into a room to talk about the real insight about prices of the school and basic info. Then the campus tour began, we walked all over the spaced out campus. Its nice to know that the campus is kept-up. Another thing are for the dorms: we got the opportunity to tour Knapp Hall an all female dorm that our residence hall associate, Ryan spoke to us about. He was telling us that 2 or 3 girls live together in one room with one closet, a hall restroom and lots of restrictions. Most freshman students live here and they are inclined to limitations while living on campus such as no vehicle, must live on campus, no alcohol, guests must be escorted to your rooms, curfews and no kitchenette. Though saying that, it by far isn't a disadvantage to attending here. It actually helps students more. Moreover, they do have dorms that are all female, all male, co-ed, learning communities for transfer students, by major and even for freshmen. They have an indoor swimming pool, lazy river that they say is the largest in the state, pool, nice sized gym, big library, study aboard programs even a TTU campus in Spain. Also, if you didn't know, they have agricultural studies as well as animal science. The top two majors here are kinesiology (exercise science) and engineering. The only school in the state that offers a degree in Wind Energy~~how interesting. The campus itself is absolutely breathtaking beautiful and plus the drive from Austin to Lubbock was exciting too--seeing all of the mountains and wind turbines. Super neat-o. However, the university is set on a major research university--it being Tier One, strong traditions and history is not so friendly people. During my visit here, I didn't encounter too many happy people. It felt as if it was rushed-kind of forced to be enthusiastic; that's from the guy at the visitors booth to our tour guide, to the individuals who worked at the bookstore. I am not saying that is the main factor, but it will play a role on how I feel about the university. I did fall in love with the TTU during this campus tour, so hopefully not everyone is distant with niceness, friendliness, homey when it comes to newbies like myself. Additionally, its nice to know that even that I earned my associates degree that they cannot turn me down with it comes to the programs I want to pursue. The Arts and Sciences department was very informative on discussing how the pre-PT requirements are and its also good to know most of the classes that are required, I've already completed at San Jacinto College. Kaila Cox, the Arts and Science recruiter was especially nice and homey. I could tell she was true and friendly. Also, if you apply to the Arts and Science department you are required to have a major, minor and foreign language in order to graduate with a BS or BA. Although, our campus tour mainly involved walking outside to view the beautiful building rather than inside looking at how big the lecture rooms are. Another interesting thing is that if you live in Houston, Austin and Dallas (major cities in Texas), they have an admissions counselor located in your city, so you don't have to drive all the way up to Lubbock every time you have a question. Also, majority of their students transfer from Harris county--Houston. Which is neat, since I won't be the only Houstonian of TTU. The academics is strong. There's many student organizations even a few under my major and field of study. Even though, it is a nine hour drive out of Houston, from my experience a well worth it drive. read more

This is my 2 year as a student at Tech and I'm so glad this is the university I chose. My teachers from the year I started and now are all amazing and helpful. The tech staff is full of devoted professors and employees, from the maintenance people to the cafe and even the bus drivers. I feel genuinely great about knowing that I am receiving a quality education from this university. They do have a lot of weird fees in the tuition though, so just a heads up on that. Students are also not allowed to park on campus so keep that in mind as well. The library is 24 hours and will be your best study spot, I promise! read more

First a side note: Wendy, for what it's worth, Yelp's a place where you can review any local business. Since Tech is a for-profit institution of higher learning, it's totally in bounds to share your take your experience here. It's been awhile since I earned my degree from my alma mater, but I'm glad I did. Going to Tech meant the world in my development as a human being, and my best friends in the world to this day I made there, in addition to an education that helped encourage me to make my way in the real world (thankfully, not the show the Real World). And while I could carp on the wind and the fact that it literally took six hours to drive anywhere out of town that wasn't Amarillo or Friday Night Lights territory (if you were wondering, you do get used to those kind of road trips), overall, I wouldn't have traded a day of my time in West Texas at Tech. I graduated with a degree in Public Relations, and will use a little of that degree (tongue planted in cheek) to share these facts that remain in my long-term memory: - Texas Tech is the second largest campus in the US behind that of the Air Force Academy. I can only assume that the larger one has landing strips on it. - Tech's the only institution in the US to house a contiguous undergrad, law and medical school at the same location (no doubt because of all that space not used for landing strips). - The thing that you hear about how flat the city is really is true, and this is true of campus too. I once heard a man joke that he watched his dog run away...for three days. - I did crib from the Wikipedia entry that Michener was a fan of the Spanish style architecture on campus. Will Rogers' horse statue (Soapsuds) rear end points toward a rival institution if you follow it for a few hundred miles. The communications, design and engineering departments (not to mention some of the more storied ones, like viticulture -- West Texas bears an amenable grape growing environment -- ) have turned out a number of accomplished grads. It's true what others have said about the size of the campus and getting around, and there's no denying the wind (a trade off for humidity in my case...when I stepped foot on campus for the first time, I was hit with an honest-to-goodness tumbleweed)...but for my experience, Tech meant more often than not the best of times. Some may agree, others may disagree, and that's fine. I don't get back as often as I could, but while I was raised in the big city, I grew up at Tech. And that's worth a guns up or two. read more

This is an expensive school with all kinds of taxes. For the amount of money we are spending to send our son to school, the majority of his teachers do NOT speak English. IF they speak English, it is not their first or second language. My son had to teach himself on more than one occasion in order to understand slightly and not tank the class. So, we are paying the university who pays the teachers, and then the students are teaching themselves. They should be refunded some of the money since they are doing their professor's job. Then, some of the dorms are ridiculous. My son's girlfriend's dorm was ok. She had 2 beds, desks, dressers, closets and 2 sinks with mirrors. It was small, but it did the job. They share a bathroom for the floor. My son's dorm was a large room with 4 boys. They had 4 beds, 4 mobile closets, 4 night stands and then a counter with chairs for studying. There was no sink in this room. I think it is ridiculous not to have a sink in each of the rooms. I could live with the room if they could afford to find good teachers who speak the language of the majority of the students for a university in the United States where our language is ENGLISH. If someone who doesn't speak English as a first language could communicate as well as if it were their first language, I wouldn't have a problem with them teaching. Just beware before sending your child to Texas Tech. You will pay a high price just to have your child teach themselves. read more

Yelpers are excellent judges of Faculty and Research quality. They can really tell the difference between a PhD and an MBA. (Hint: a PhD never orders a pumpkin spice latte, no matter what time of year). And I'll tell you, Texas Tech is plum covered up with PhD's. Just look at them! So, if you're trying to figure out where to do your graduate study, look no further.They are rather short on Starbucks around here, though. read more

This is really strange for me, writing a review on Texas Tech University. Yelp is more for restaurants and shops, not higher learning institutions. Yelp is for talking about somewhere you spent and hour or two, not three years of your life. But I just have to say a few words. Texas Tech is a good school. Not great, but very good. It is the place where people that grow up in this area dream of going, and most of them do. It excels in the areas you would think a college in West Texas would... like Ag, or football (I guess). I enrolled because I lived in Lubbock and I wanted a Masters degree. I didn't think I would be moving anytime soon, and I was tired of waiting to start school. It really was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I met the most amazing people, studied under the most incredible professors, and obtained another piece of paper to hang on my wall, along with the most valuable information I never knew I needed to learn. You have to have respect for this school. Yes it's in Lubbock, which is debatably boring and stale. Nationally I have no idea of where it stands in the rankings. But for people in Lubbock, it's something to be excited about, and proud of. The people are GOOD PEOPLE. I like it. I really do. read more

Professor/ student ratio is small in upper level degree programs. TTech is a great research college, and is the law school has a high rate of passage on the bar exam. I didn't love college, but that is just because I am more of a hands on learner, not a class goer. Texas Tech has a beautiful campus and probably has spent millions upon millions keeping it that way. The campus is huge and has a lot of really pretty areas. My favorite spot on campus is on the second floor of the sub. There are these so called "study" rooms. They each have 2-4 seats in them and you can go in, close the door, and study with friends. The doors are made of glass which makes me happy that weird things aren't going on in there. I would personally go in, turn the lights off, and take a nap after lunch before my next class. This is one of the reasons I didn't have a 4.0 probably hahah. Tech is a great place to make friends, learn and grow as a person. read more

If you want a degree from a public Texas University and 1) don't like the Austin counter culture, and 2) don't want to join or be associated with a cult, then Texas Tech is just right. A good mix of people without having to fight a stigma. If you are a student, then your opinion doesnt matter to the faculty. If you are faculty, then you walk around like your god. If you are god, then you're sporting a double-T shirt b/c of all the bible thumping. read more

Coming from someone who didn't go to school here, Tech and Lubbock are West Texas treasures. Whether hitting some of the local restaurants or crawling the bars on Broadway, there is fun to be had. Sporting events are pretty good bang for the buck here too. read more

Having studied here, I think it's an alright university. Just some heads up suggestions. Their rules and strictness level is a bit weird. Some "staff & security" here doesn't really have proper reasons at time for some of their actions towards students. Got quite a lot of "professional" confused people workin around the campus, besides some students. Be wise and careful attending this university! Best for masters/graduate degrees! read more

Of course, I love my school. The campus is beautiful and well-kept. However, I've had some issues with some departments and parking. The good outweighs the bad, but I still can't wait to be able to move on and use what I learned here out in the real world. Best university ever. Everybody is so nice, diverse and welcoming. The campus is huge and well kept. Professors care about your academics and almost always have office hours to help you. In addition Tech also offers free SI Sessions (supplemental instruction) which are basically just a big tutoring session ran by TA's and grad students- they're so helpful. There's also free tutoring in Holden Hall and a million other resources that will help you succeed- both academic and non academic. And to the review that said stuff about not being able to have a car/have a curfew, that's false. You can definitely have a car, just make sure you buy a ~ $200 parking pass to one of the parking lots on campus, there isn't a "curfew" and guests don't need to be escorted? This university is amazing. The negative reviews are clearly people that didn't know how to get off their ass and and use the multiple resources offered to them, or they didn't get accepted to the university and are salty. I loved my time there, and all my friends there, but I am definitely happier I'm in Dallas now. I hated walking so far on campus to classes, but it made me thankful for smaller campuses. Most of the faculty keeps their nose up at the sky, but that's ok, that just means they'll trip sooner or later. I love the depot district, and my memories there were sweet. I wasn't too impressed with the EMAC program...they have a ways to go. I felt I did waste some money there to be honest, I feel more classes could have been offered in my program, but I could have researched it more. I will always have a special place in my heart for Lubbock and the Raiders, but wind and dust isn't for everyone. read more

I love my Alma Mater. Tech does a great job in many aspects: food offerings, campus beautification, courses, and faculty and staff. I have had the pleasure of seeing how the campus has changed and evolved since I first attended in 2011. They have started operating a Food Truck (all the rage now) and they are always trying to beautify the campus. Staff have always been friendly and they have some of the best faculty around. read more

I signed up for online graduate classes in the engineering department and then found out my employer would not reimburse me. My class started on a Tuesday, but the last day to drop was a Sunday. I could not figure out how to drop and nobody was available on Sunday to provide help. Monday morning after getting in contact with the appropriate support staff at 9 am I was able to withdraw from the university and thus get out of the class. Finally, I had dropped the class the day before it started and was told to just have my advisor back date a form and I would not be penalized a percentage of my tuition fees. Long story short, dozens of emails and phone calls later, Texas Tech tried to damage my credit. They lied to me (in an e-mail and over the phone) and I eventually caved and paid $500 because nobody answered their phone on that Sunday. This is the most unethical institution I have ever dealt with and I am a life long student. Any time I can steer someone away from Texas Tech I feel I have done them a service. read more

As an Alum (class of 88), was surprised to see this on Yelp as well while browsing through my old Lubbock haunts. I have lived all over and you will not find a better college or college town to go off to College. The campus is beautiful, the living facilities on or off campus are abundant and affordable. The social life is excellent and it is a great party town.....Tech is how a student should go off to experience college, in a smaller town where the University is the focal point....the town caters to this University. In addition, if you are a single Lad going off to school...this University has the most attractive Co-eds. Playboy made their first visit to Lubbock while I was their and it was the last stop on their "girls of the Southwest Conference" tour and they came to Lubbock and made it know that in all their years of doing the "college girl tours" Lubbock by far had the most pretty and abundant Women on any campus they have seen. So there you have it. A very good school (trying to become great). A beautiful, affordable University, the right size town supporting and catering to you....and the best looking Co-eds around.....I sure hope Tech has kept up that tradition since I left. I am currently a student at Tech and I am transferring immediately! My experience at this school has been nothing short of terrible. At the beginning of the semester Texas Tech sent my financial aid to someone else's bank account. They immediately informed me of the mistake and told me to come up to the office to get it fixed. I thought that they were handling this very well UNTIL I got to the office. The first person I spoke to had no idea what was going on and sent me to someone else. The second person was late to work so I had to wait for over an hour to talk to anyone. Once this person arrived I showed them the message that said that it was the schools fault. As soon as she read this message she proceeded to inform me that this was in no way their fault and that I needed to learn to take responsibility for what happens to me. After yelling at her boss for about an hour and making four calls to condescending Tech employees, I finally got my money one month late. One month into this semester, I gt an email informing me that the school had unintentionally sent my private information to over 500 people and that there was nothing they could do about it. When I emailed the dean of students, who's office sent out the info, I was told that there was nothing to be done and that this was just life. This place is not a school. It is just the worlds largest scam. read more

Do not attend this school. Financial aid lied to me just to get me in. Professors changed my grades, just so the department would not have to give me the scholarships they had promised. Good luck finding a professor you can understand. The academics are just plain awful. Classes are either so easy a 3 year old could pass or so hard PhD students can't do the work. I had a TA for my Physics I and II classes that could not do the work because they said it was harder than what they do. This school is a huge waste of money and I would not recommend it to anyone! read more

Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas is a school that is not only a school that has high standards when it comes to the school's academics among schools across the nation, but the atmosphere itself is something, I feel, is quite unique to the university. There is so much school spirit among students, teachers, staff members, families, and even neighboring businesses take a huge part in spreading their love of the school. You hear of so many alumni's who attended Texas Tech, still share their love for the university whether they are still residents in Lubbock or have moved on to follow their careers. All people want to say usually about Texas tech is that everyone can get in but yet many people do not know that the business school is number seven in the nation. Not only does Texas Tech have a good business school but it also has one of the top engineering and law programs. Our football program used to be very well known in the southwest conference which we were a part of from 1956 all the way till the conference disbanded in 1996 and Texas tech moved to the Big XII. Texas Tech has the fourth most bowl game appearances in all of the Big XII. No matter win or lose tech will always support our football team. So if you want a college with a lot off good scholastic achievements and lots of team comradery Texas Tech is the place for you to go. read more
