You probably wouldn't see this preschool-K12 math & reading learning center hidden among a small…read moreshopping complex between Allisonville Rd. & 116th St. I used to be a former Kumon student and almost 20 years later - I am thankful for going through this program (even though I pretty much sucked in math when I was younger). Now I'm a math whiz - although my word problem, intermediate algebra, & calculus days are long forgotten. This location has just changed ownership, but it was great from the startup. After almost 20 years of working there, the previous owners were a wonderful couple who definitely showed passion in teaching - not based on business aspect. Under new management, the new owner is keeping Kumon's previous model. He is very organized and provides good feedback to students and parents as well. He tailors his/her own curriculum based on a student's achievement. They have a wonderful early learning teaching assistants as well as math & reading staff who take pride in grading material and helping students with any questions they may have. Because this tutoring center is based on self-motivation, students must work try to work independently to understand concepts. The instructor will guide them if they cannot figure out the problem. From what I understand, prospective parents schedule an appointment with the instructor take their child(ren) in for a free placement test to evaluate their child(ren)'s understanding. From there, if the parent decides to enroll their child(ren), they will need to register their child(ren). I'm not sure what the pricing is now (due to inflation), but I'm estimating around $95/mo per subject. I don't have any kids yet, but I would trust this instructor to tutor my child - perhaps in the future so they can be ahead in school like I was!

Was then ready to sign up but Atif did not get back with me and I had to call back a week later. Then I was told that the person that could teach both is now busy or can't. So ended up with 2 different tutors coming to my home. Not what I wanted or was promised but I went ahead with the in home meeting and signed the paper work& paid the sign up fees. I also wanted SAT in home tutors. Was told after over a month of waiting for the SAT tutoring to start - 4 weeks of SAT test prep time now wasted- that he can't find anyone that can come to my home. That I would have to drive over 30 min to the tutor paying the same rate of $55 an hour as if they were coming to my home. He said this would be temporary until the end of December and then he had a tutor that lived in my area that could come to my home. So I agreed to go forward since he said it was going to be temporary situation. I was trying to me understanding even though it was not what I wanted but I trusted that he was not going to burn me 2 times. In the meantime, the Math tutor did not seem to really know all her information. She spent a lot of time looking things up and trying to recall precalculus information. So this is wasted time for me paying $45 a hour I want someone that knows the information. I voiced my concern to Atif and he seem surprised and said he would speak with her. Well nothing changed & my paid time with that tutor was over and that tutor after that was not even going to be tutoring anymore. So at that time Atif then had to find someone else for the Math tutoring but when I called corporate to complain about everything going on he says that he immediately found a new tutor for us as soon as I told him. WOW, what a lie. I was shocked. He only found a new tutor because the other tutor was no longer working for ClubZ. Then I suggested to corporate that he then give me a credit for the wasted time with the other tutor & he flat out refused. Still before I called corporate a lot of other stuff had happened. I was waiting for him to get all the tutors scheduled so that we can get things going. It was a lot of back and forth emails and phone calls and still nothing scheduled even though I gave him my entire weeks availabilities so he can coordinate with all the tutors. Still days and weeks are passing. I finally tell Atif just give me the names and numbers of the tutors so that I can get everything scheduled. He finally gave me the 2 SAT tutors numbers. In addition to the new Math tutor. He finally gave me her number as well. I then contacted all 3 tutors and got everything scheduled in 1 afternoon. What Atif could not do for a few weeks. I just don't get it. Thats your job to coordinate tutors. Why did he not do that? I still do not understand that. How was I able to get everything scheduled and I texted him the schedule in 1 afternoon when he could not. Even corporate was surprised at this when I told them. They said I should not have to do that and it is his job. So now we were getting closer to the end of December and I kept asking for the name and number of the SAT tutor that is coming to my home so we can set up the schedule for January & on for the tutoring. After several weeks of this back and forth he finally tells me that the person he was going to have come to me in no longer available. Umm wait.... isn't this the same thing that was said the first time. Are you kidding me. Is this a bait and switch. Tell me what I want to hear, get me to pay the fees and then pull the rug from under me and say you don't have the tutor anymore. If you don't have the tutors in my area then just say so from the beginning. Don't give customers empty promises and expect them not to get upset. I called a different clubZ Maggie 317-826-2222 and told her what I needed and she got back with me in 1 -2 days & said that unfortunately she did not have anyone that serviced my area. Thats was it done no confusion no misunderstandings.. just a straight forward answer. Why didn't I get that with Atif? He appears caring and wanting to help but in the end it really is all about the money because after all that he refused to refund me for the fees he took. $50 per child - 2 children tutoring, $150 for SAT.. Why would I pay these fees if I was not planning on using the service? I wouldn't! So if you told me you would have a tutor then you did not isn't it your obligation to then refund because you could not hold up your end of the deal? Apparently not in Atif's world. That is not how it works. Corporate even told him the right thing to do and he shouldn't let things go this way. They suggested to him to offer the refunds but he would not. The most he supposedly said he would refund is $40. I still have not received by the way. So I paid $250 in fees, $180 for math tutoring that was not good at a total of $430. How is $40 fair?

Recently took my 15 year old whom I suspected had dyslexia and after $1200 spent got a diagnosis of anxiety. Knew this was wrong because I'd already had my daughter tested with a family friend who specializes in Dyslexia but lives in VA who had confirmed my suspicions. She implored me to find another Indiana provider so I could get my daughter a much needed 504 at school and tutoring. My family friend also pointed out a couple of key things about DII's methods that were clear indicators to her that they are grossly outdated in their approach and testing. Some of these include that DII's psychologist's background was in behavioral sciences with no speciality in reading or learning disabilities, their tests were achievement tests only, they don't have a Speech Language Pathologist on staff, had no access or familiarity with the PAST test, RAN test, CTOP test etc. and had no idea of the certification level of any of their OG tutors. Do yourself a favor and spend your money with Dr. Horn at Beacon who can do a thorough and in depth psycho educational analysis. As it turns out, ever professional we've seen OTHER THAN DII has agreed that my daughter is very much dyslexic. When I reached to DII to explain my frustration with taking my $1200 and offering me a very unprofessional analysis and report afterwards, they promised to pay for additional testing for my daughter with an outside SLP and then refused to reimburse me after I had the testing done. These people didn't care at all whether they helped my child or not and proved they don't adhere to standard principled business practices either. I'd steer far away from this business if you suspect your child is dyslexic as DII is in the business of taking money with little regard for actually helping children.
