I discovered, when my oldest was in the 2nd grade, that although I'm a certified elementary teacher, I was the LAST person to help my daughter with math homework! There were struggles for years. I didn't know how to help her and couldn't afford a private tutor. I just did what I could and her teachers helped the best they could. She did "okay" in math but it was still a frustrating experience and my daughter grew to really dislike math. Then Mathnasium came to Decatur. My 7th grader's math teacher was out a lot that year and so I decided to try Mathnasium. I opted for the 6 month program. I wanted my daughter to fill in any blanks in her math education and obtain confidence for 8th grade math. Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, she was furious with me for signing her up. She was quiet and moody during her sessions. She complained about having to go during the summer. I ignored her and Sam (the owner) was AWESOME at supporting her and making her feel comfortable and welcome. He hand picked tutors for her and she found a couple of tutors that she really connected with. I really want to emphasize how much Sam worked with us to help my daughter feel comfortable! At the end of the 6 months, I was very satisfied. Not only did my daughter's confidence in math improve, but her confidence and dedication to ALL her subject improved! My daughter who was not really enjoying school was now talking about college a lot and seriously considering going for the International Baccalaureate program! But then something really weird and wonderful happened. When I told my daughter that her last session was coming up, she asked for more sessions. SHE DIDN'T WANT TO STOP GOING TO TUTORING! My daughter looks forward to coming every week because she knows that the tutors at Mathnasium will explain, in a way she can understand, anything she didn't "get" from the teacher that week. Oh, how I wish I'd had Mathnasium when I was in high school! When I come in to pick up my daughter, I'm always greeted warmly and I'm made to feel welcome. During the fourth grade, my son felt really defeated in math. We started Mathnasium in the spring and things changed immediately. First of all, my son was actually happy- he literally danced when we got home! He knew that we had found something that would help him and he was excited because Sam (the owner) and his staff teach number sense, not just memorization. My son is one of those kids who have to understand "why." When I received his MAP scores (standardized test that measures growth) my son had tripled his growth target, which is highly unusual. I am excited to share that since our daughter's test scores suddenly dropped in the 4th grade because she was learning her math in Spanish at her language immersion school, she has been going to Mathnasium to build up her math confidence, and has it worked!
