She struggled with math since middle school. We tried private tutoring as well as another nearby tutoring center, neither did very much for her. I thought that was the norm and she just needed time to catch up...rebuild the foundation. But I was worried for her. She was struggling and losing her confidence. She thought she was dumb. That's changed since FPL. Even after her first session. She couldn't believe how patient and kind her tutor was. He didn't give her face or sigh when she didn't understand. He told her it's OK and explained it in different ways until she understood. He even went pass the hour to help her on several occasions. Her views towards math has changed. She's even helping her classmates with math now. The tutors also helped her prepare for any upcoming exams. FPL has changed my daughters life. This may sound too good to be true, but it's the honest truth. She's not getting straight A's but she's no longer carrying a heavy load on her shoulder.

You have to use a smart card that you pay for every month it's cheap but have to try not to lose it or it may cost around 15 bucks to replace it. If they don't want your kid there they will try EVERYTHING to make you leave. Teachers are young and a bit UNPROFESSIONAL. It seems they had something against me or my daughter who is only 1 and a half. Staff may treat you and your kid different if you pay with a voucher. Try to avoid this daycare there are better ones out there.

My daughter Lulu is a 7th grader here…read more WMS was founded last year, and it's a sliding-scale private school dedicated to social and economic diversity. There are no textbooks, and in fact, true to the name, most of the learning is workshopped, meaning students learn through real world application, building and creating things. Earlier this year my daughter learned slopes, geometry and trig concepts through building a skateboard and skate ramp. She's created plays, movies, podcasts, books, VR applications, digital games, a zillion woodshop projects (she is very confident with all hardware equipment now).  Her classes have had a 6:1 student to teacher ratio (there are about 15 kids in her grade). This will grow, but won't exceed 10:1 I believe. Each kid gets a new macbook pro and the school uses modern tech - slack, google apps, etc - to communicate with students and families. When the pandemic hit, they smoothly and gracefully transitioned into digital learning, providing live learning all day every day. In the fall, they learned in prospect park all day, and will return there this spring. They have rotated weekly with the 6th grade for in person learning through winter. Each day begins with meditation. They have advisory every day and prioritize social-emotional skills; kindness is a necessary quality to get into the school. They have on-site covid testing and are extremely cautious about covid. True to the promise, the student body is a mix of students from all walks of life, and the tuition ranges from ~$500/year to ~30k/year - I believe there are 5 levels of tuition, although I have no idea who is in what level. The parents are tight and supportive of the staff. As they're a startup, they've been through some teachers as they learn the best fit, which is expected. But the core teachers are enormously talented, enthusiastic, incredible teachers who have a solid and positive rapport with the kids. The school was started by Andrew Ravin, who was a teacher at MS51 for some time. His stem teacher has a PhD in Math from Colombia and still teaches there. They are an impressive group. Above all, the reason I wanted to write this is because my daughter is thriving. She LOVES school. She hates summer camp but when the idea was floated for possible camp with this group, she squealed with excitement at the idea of it. She was a strong student when she started and she has some aptitude in certain areas, so the teachers feed her harder challenges in those areas to maximize her potential, as i'm sure they do with other children who display a capacity for more. There isn't any "mean kid" crap, all the kids have a great relationship with each other and a mutual respect. My daughter's sense of community and confidence has only strengthened through covid. Currently, the school is building out their forever home which will be just on the other side of Prospect Park, 10k sqft of maker and performance space in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Ms. Denisse, the humanities teacher, has more than 20 years experience in instruction and is an incredibly sensible person. My son is learning to love school, mostly because there is always someone in the school community who can listen to him, understand him and will not give up on him. My son went through three different elementary schools and never truly engaged or loved school until now. All the kids have a great relationship with each other and a mutual respect. Prospect Lefferts Gardens will be the new WMS home come Sept. 2021. They are currently building at 495 Flatbush Ave. (between Empire and Lefferts), a 10k sq ft of maker and performance space in a middle school. Our daughter…read morestarted in September of last year at 20 months and was immediately thrilled to go to playgroup each day. She comes home excited and happy and tired and always has something fun to tell us about her day. They go outside every day, rain or shine, and she is always coming home with cute art or plants or other creative projects they've worked on together. We love the school and feel so lucky to have found it, Patty and Maya are clearly excellent at what they do and it's really amazing and comforting to know our kid is in such good hands.

While the administration pays a lot of lip service to the Reggio Emilia philosophy, that's all marketing and zero substance at this school. Reggio Emilia at its core is adaptive and flexible; the goal is tailor the educational approach to the learning style of each individual child. Contrary to that approach, the teaching staff (who, it must be said, are mostly very kind and caring) are trained to follow a single approach that is applied to all the children. My child attended the 2's and 3's program. When I observed that some of the classroom approaches were too rigid for her in some ways, and not challenging enough in others, and that the environment was in some ways not conducive to her learning style, I made suggestions to the administration about ways to adapt the setting to better suit her needs. My requests, which were trivial in scope and would not have posed much of a challenge from a budget or logistics perspective, were largely ignored. Instead, I was advised to hire an additional teacher, at my own expense, to work one-on-one with my child because her existing teachers were "too busy" with the other kids to handle my requests. Imagine that: after paying a tuition of over $15,000 per year for pre-school (which was more than I paid for my excellent private college!), I was told that in order to meet my child's educational requirements, I would need to pay for another teacher, an additional $120 per hour! Like the other parent below, we moved our daughter to another Williamsburg school, which has smaller class sizes, and an administration that cares about cultivating a healthy environment of learning. The people who run Williamsburg Northside care more about cultivating a healthy bottom line.
