I booked with Alisa for a custom arm sleeve and the process was super clear and helpful. Her design came out perfect for what I wanted and she created a comfortable space for me to be able to tell her if I wanted to change anything or redo the stencil placement. The studio was kept clean and organized with a bunch of sick art, figurines, and decorations. (They even had a mini retro arcade system for me to use while I waited) The sleeve took about 7 and a half hours, so I was really thankful that Alisa could thug it out with me while keeping her attention to detail and quality high. Jose is insanely talented. If you care about clean fine line work and micro realism, he's your guy. The detail on this tattoo is unreal. The cherubs are perfectly balanced, the shading is super smooth, and the lines are so clean it almost doesn't look real. Nothing looks heavy or overworked. Everything is soft, precise, and exactly how fine line tattoos should look. What impressed me most was the micro realism. Even the tiny details hold up close, and the lettering came out crisp and delicate without overpowering the piece. You can tell Jose really knows how to control his lines and understands how tattoos will age over time. I plan to continue booking with Jose for all of my fine line and micro realism tattoos moving forward because his work truly speaks for itself. Jose is also incredibly flexible and patient. When I first booked, I originally planned on getting the tattoo on my hand, then kept changing my mind about placement. I must have sent him at least ten emails with changes. Instead of getting annoyed, he was so patient and made sure I felt completely confident and happy with the final decision, which ended up being my back. When I got to the studio, we played with the stencils, and his precision and perfectionist mentality completely won me over. He truly cares about balance and symmetry and will not let you walk out with something that looks crooked or unbalanced. His goal is for the tattoo to look impeccable, and it shows. I also have to give a huge shoutout to the studio owners, Sam and Howie. While Jose was tattooing me, Sam was working on another client nearby, creating a floral neck piece that was absolutely breathtaking. Watching her work made me want to book with her in the future. She is clearly an incredible artist. Meanwhile, Howie was DJing and mixing music the entire time, and honestly, it was such a vibe. His taste in music was perfect. Chill but still upbeat. I got to a point where I completely stopped listening to my podcast and was just enjoying his mixes instead. It made the whole experience feel relaxed and fun, especially during a longer session. There were also other tattoo artists in the studio, all working on amazing designs. The level of talent in this place is unreal. Everyone is so skilled, welcoming, and passionate about what they do. The studio itself is clean, comfortable, and has such a strong sense of community. You really feel taken care of here. The friendliness, the talent, and the overall energy of the space made this such a great experience. On top of that, their prices are very reasonable for the quality of work you're getting. IF YOU CAN, PLEASE ONLY GO HERE! I was in the area of DTLA and came across this shop on yelp (thank you guys) and I seen they accepted walk-ins. I originally just wanted to get a quote on a price to see what I'm working with. When I walked in, the shop was so professional and clean, and super welcoming. The gentleman doing a tattoo stepped away to come talk to me, view what I wanted, and recommend another tattoo artists also doing a tattoo at the moment, Emily, because she does really good in the style I wanted. I really appreciated how they made new customers or walk-ins feel, even if they're busy, they will make time for you. Emily was an absolute angel & gave me a very reasonable price and I was able to schedule within that same week! I came in today for my first two tattoos, and I immediately felt at home. We got really lucky with finding this gem. Hubby and I were in town for a concert and decided to be spontaneous and get tattoos. We walked into Mateo Studio and were greeted by Serina and Jordon. They were both attentive and open to our ideas. We were on a time crunch so they were very insightful on how we both can get a tattoo that matched our vision within the timeframe that we had. Our initial thought was getting skeletons together. I had about 3 pictures for reference. It was nice because they showed us their unique style and helped us bring our vision to life. We did not get same day tattoos but were booked for the next day. Check in was smooth. They were both communicative during the process, allowing us breaks when needed and checked in on us. This was my first ever tattoo, so I did a lot of research before booking and I honestly couldn't be happier with how it turned out! There's a parking lot right next to the building (it's $7, with options to self-park or valet), but if you want to avoid that fee, there's also street parking available. The building itself was a bit hard to find at first, but I just called the number attached to my appointment confirmation email, and the person who answered was super kind and helpful in guiding me. Once inside, the studio felt so warm and welcoming. It has a strong modern Asian Pop-Culture aesthetic, with lots of thoughtful trinkets and decor; it was honestly way more stylish than I expected. The owner greeted me and checked me in, and everyone made me feel really comfortable right away. My tattoo artist was Alisa, and I chose her because I really loved her work online. As a fellow Filipino, I also felt like I could trust her. She was incredibly sweet, patient, and professional. The whole process was quick, and since I have a high pain tolerance, it really wasn't bad at all. What I really appreciated was how open she was throughout; she encouraged me to speak up if I wanted to make any changes, and even let me FaceTime someone for a second opinion before finalizing everything. Afterward, she walked me through the aftercare instructions in detail and was just so thoughtful (plus she offers free touch-ups within the first two months!). I cannot recommend this studio and especially Alisa enough. I visited Mateo Studio LA last month to get a new tattoo from Alyssa and some color and touchup to an existing one. This was my second time working with Alyssa (first was when she did a guest spot in San Francisco at the end of last year) but my first time visiting at Mateo, her home studio, and it was nothing short of a great experience! The studio is located in a huge warehouse building in Arts District and was a pleasant place to hang out for the day while preparing for and getting my tattoos. The vibe and decor match perfectly with the bright, airy space and they're comfortably stocked with amenities as well, from light refreshments when you need a break to the well-equipped bathroom. Alyssa, Howie, and the rest of the staff were always friendly and helpful throughout the entire process. Alyssa's work (@peach.delyte on Instagram) first caught my eye through her unique blend of styles drawing inspiration from nature and organic elements as well as abstract brushstroke designs, often with whimsical or macabre touches. For both of my tattoos, I had specific visions for the designs that Alyssa helped bring to reality. Working with her feels like a true collaboration and she's great about offering focused feedback and suggestions throughout the process of finalizing the designs. The first time I got a tattoo from her (the Lily, in black&white shading only) I was thoroughly surprised at quickly and efficiently she worked, and how much of a positive impact that had on the overall experience. The same was true for our second session where she added color to the Lily and a new tattoo of three whales. When I saw Sam was taking September bookings I LEAPT to grab a spot while I was in the area ;u; I was already going to a music festival w my bf around then, so we extended our stay just for my appointment. Beyond happy with my first tattoo with Mateo Studio and hope to come back for more work. I've been wanting cherry blossoms/plum blossoms for years but could never find a style that really stood out to me. While looking online, I fell in love with the unique way Sam draws blossoms and sent an appointment request email over as soon as her books opened (around 1 month ahead). She got back to me within the week and we confirmed an appointment that worked with the timeline of my trip. The parking lot had plenty of spaces on a weekday and was easy to find. The studio itself is in a large, industrial-style building with high ceilings, super clean and very modern. Lots of cool pop culture art around, and a tiny tabletop arcade game in the lobby for waiting customers. Sam was highly meticulous and considerate throughout the process, from redrawing parts of the tattoo to checking on me during the actual session. Each side took around 2 hours. So far, it's been healing well and looks incredible-- I've been receiving lots of compliments from peers.
