Theres hardly anything interesting in there to see, seeing as the larger department stores like Debenhams and BHS is in close reach. Beales has really outdated itself making itsself a failure. There product range is poor, the items are pricey, the customer service is very poor and all seem to be stuck up attitude. The interior design is extremely poor and lighting is bad. If this store doesn't improve, it will definitely go down hill.

We got to experience it during the Christmas holidays, which was nice for sight seeing. It opens at 9 am on weekdays, and the outside doors opened to the public about 5 minutes before. Many of the stores open soon after. The 3rd story consists of a variety of restaurants, all of which were closed that early in the day. Instead, quite a few coffee shops were open, including a lot of Costa's. The center of the mall consists of elevators and a set of escalators. Even at 9, there were quite a few people working and browsing.

The location consists of multiple stories, with each section having a dedicated clearance section. All prices are clearly marked, and include taxes (which somewhat compensated for the prices being in pounds). My wife got a good deal for a blouse (5 quid), that she wore multiple times on our cruise. Going on a multi-day cruise with just carry-on luggage (allowing us to be nimble as we explore), means only light weight clothing that is easy to handwash/air dry. TK Maxx (just like its sibling Marshalls/TJMaxx in the States) is great place to pick up heavily discounted clothes that fit that bill. It's also fun to see what fashion and brands a foreign country is selling...in this case, it was similar to what we are able to find in the States (along with similar prices). It was a self checkout and we had no issues using our US bank issued card. Learning: TJK changed the name to TK Maxx to avoid confusion with a British retailed called T.J. Hughes.

It has a small and apparently carefully chosen selection of anything you could possibly need, from housewares to luggage to shoes. A tiny escalator goes between floors. The most extensive collection is women's clothing but they have menswear as well. Upstairs is a cafeteria and a hidden away hair salon and a beauty salon. I love coming here for a quick browse in the center of town.

Also, the pay machines don't take cards, and there are no cash machines on site - you have to walk to the High Street for those. I know this because I couldn't find a slot for my card, had no money on me and had to ask the security man in his little booth where the nearest cashpoint was, explaining that I wasn't from Winchester. He very helpfully replied 'High Street'. Because I know where that is, don't I? Anyway, shops. There were some. But lots were empty and closed up.

As an abstract artist, I had a very success Spring art exhibition in Salisbury in March 2018 (despite the Ukrainian poisoning debacle). In contrast, I haven't been able to get any response to my enquiries about holding an art exhibition either from the City council's facilities or commercial art galleries in the city. It's no surprise to me that the Winchester has lots of empty shops. Some of these could be used for pop-up art exhibitions and other attractions. I get regular offers to exhibit my abstracts in the USA as well as cities in the UK like Bristol and Birmingham. It's a surprise and a bit of a shock that an artist like me living and working in Hampshire can't exhibit my work in the county's capital.

Their excuse was that the clothes didn't sell very well and I would have to travel to Waterlooville to see if they carry plus sized clothing, which is about 40km away. It astounds me that a store that advertises that it sells plus sized clothing actually doesn't. And them saying the clothes didn't sell very well that's why the Eastleigh one doesn't carry them is just ridiculous .. considering the obesity problem in the UK and that at least 50% if not more ladies are at least a size 16 or higher. Sadly, the other plus sized clothing providers in the Southampton area have also closed. Their suggestion? Order my clothes online.
