The administration is hands-on, they listen very well and often incorporate feedback from the parents. The academics and faculty are top-notch. The teachers help students reach their full potential everyday. The facilities are outstanding and well maintained. The maintenance team works so hard to keep everything clean and in great condition. I don't even think I am as passionate about anything as much as the teachers here are about teaching and the Montessori method! While the years of accolades achieved can speak volumes on WMS's commitment to the Montessori way of life (only school in Illinois to have earned full recognition from Association Montessori International (AMI)), the biggest kept secret, which actually isn't a secret, is their summer camp. Each summer camp session has a theme that is throughly explored with craft projects and other activities. But, the coolest exploration is for the elementary students, who take the most unique and fascinating off-campus field trips. Last year, to name a few, the students went to Pilsen to see the murals, the Chicago History Museum to further their understanding of the city's history, and Cernan Earth and Space Center. Honestly, I wish I could join in on these adventures! In addition to all this learning, there is a whole lot of summer fun still to be had, with frequent visits to the local pool and splash pads. With all that said, my kids have an enriched summer (with more energy and gusto than I could provide)!

15 years ago we chose Montessori Education for our children. It was an investment we were…read morepassionate about. WMS offered the perfect conditions to nurture and "grow" our children. I wrote an essay years ago, Locally Grown, about our experience of the treasured early elementary years. Fast forward and our oldest is graduating High School and youngest is a freshman. As a family, we are compelled to share our honest and sincere feedback of this experience from a retrospective perspective. These thoughts have been communicated with the head of school directly however, we feel called to share publicly as to offer insight to those families considering the AP. Our children's recommendation is: "Stay through 6th and skip the AP". The Adolescent Program at WMS presents a conflicting experience for several students and families, highlighting significant concerns and areas for improvement. While the school claims to provide a holistic approach to education, it falls short in crucial areas, leaving some students unprepared for the challenges of high school. The AP  has strayed far from the original Montessori philosophy, which emphasized neutrality, respect for individuality, and a focus on grounded, thoughtful education. The current approach has deviated from those principles, favoring an agenda-driven model that seems to place the needs of its teachers above those of the students. The most striking issue is the lack of preparation in foundational subjects, especially math and writing. My oldest states she was at a disadvantage due to the insufficiency in these core areas, leading to regret and frustration as struggled to catch up in her freshman year. She expressed she was profoundly underprepared for the rigor of her high school, acknowledging the gap could have been much wider had we not chosen to leave the AP before the completion of the 9th year. The social environment at WMS also presents challenges. We observed evident favoritism towards certain students, creating an atmosphere of exclusion and uneven attention. Additionally, teachers engage in questionable behaviors, including texting students and discussing other students in a negative light both in front of students and sometimes parents. A total lack of integrity. The teacher-student dynamic often feels less like a mentorship and more like a friendship-seeking relationship which undermines the authority and maturity required in an educational setting. For example, encouraging students to experiment with nail polish, twerking, and other frivolities rather than teaching math and writing. Some teachers seem more interested in fulfilling their own emotional needs through vulnerable adolescents than providing the guidance, wisdom, and leadership that students require. The program's attempt at inclusivity and open-mindedness is overshadowed by a lack of neutrality. Teachers actively promote personal social beliefs, leaving little room for objective discussion or diverse perspectives. The curriculum, too,  leans heavily into certain ideologies, and teachings, creating an atmosphere of comparison, while neglecting broader educational goals. As parents, we were told by staff "The adolescent brain is broken " and they will struggle with decision making and managing emotions. Indeed, the adolescent brain's developmental limitations are not adequately considered in decision-making. The emphasis on identity exploration, and identity-dependent worthiness, adds to the confusion and emotional turmoil during a period when students should be focusing on personal growth and academic development.  Our observation has been that the adolescent program has strayed from"following the child" to "following the cause".  A distinct contrast to the original Montessori philosophy, which emphasized neutrality, respect for individuality, and a focus on grounded, thoughtful education. The current approach appears to favor an agenda-driven model that often places the needs of the school and its teachers above those of the students. In conclusion, while the WMS Adolescent  Program may appeal to some families for its progressive approach, it is our determination it falls short in preparing students for future academic success and personal development. A return to the original Montessori mission--focusing on respect, objective learning, and appropriate developmental guidance--could better serve the needs of these adolescents during one of the most critical stages of their growth. Investing in a Montessori education was a good parenting decision but pulling them from the Adolescent Program was our greatest decision.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Greenfriends Montessori for the day on 8/22/25. I was very…read moreimpressed with everything I witnessed. I am a Montessori mom with three grown children who all went through a Montessori school (starting in preschool and some stayed as long as middle school). We also briefly tried public school, Waldorf, and home schooling. So I feel I am in a good position to assess the current Greenfriends school. The school is located in a rural peaceful setting with a large outdoor play space with gardens and fruit trees. The interior space is absolutely beautiful - light, sunny, homey, cheerful and clean. The materials are so well cared for. The teachers are kind, compassionate, intelligent, loving and patient with the children. All the children were happy and engaged. There was a nice balance of intellectual/academic stimulation, reading/writing, play, relaxation, listening to stories, moving their bodies, relaxing during snack and meals, and social engagement with peers. I was especially impressed with Lakshmi Mohan, who is not only a seasoned Montessori teacher with a history of having run her own thriving Montessori school in another state for years, but also a wonderful leader to the entire Greenfriends school community. I have known her for 20 years. Honestly, my children had mixed experiences in their Hawaii Montessori school. But we had very limited options, and this was the best we could find. The academics were solid, but the character of some of the teachers was very poor. Character of a teacher is critical, especially in the younger years when the children are learning to bridge the gap between home life and school. So a teacher needs to be very loving, patient and show integrity because children are so affected by the vibe of the adults they are around. If only our kids had been able to have Lakshmi in their lives. I can only imagine how amazing that would've been for them. When I met her 20 years ago I wished we lived in her area. She has a very thorough understanding of the Montessori teaching methods which is very important. But to me in the most important part is her heart and character. She teaches the children with so much patience, love, kindness and joy. It was obvious to me that she cares so much about each child. Some people were born to work with children. Lakshmi is one such person. The other teachers were also wonderful and caring. This created a sense of calm, order, joy and happiness. School was fun! It was very heartwarming to see a three year-old little girl telling me how excited she was to learn and how much she loved MATH! The children went outdoors and had a lesson about trees on the grounds. They enjoyed finding a caterpillar. They worked on counting and writing. They were kind to each other. If there were any issues whatsoever, (all I saw was interrupting) they were redirected very patiently. When a teacher is very calm and loving, it sets the tone for the entire classroom culture. These Greenfriends teachers set such a beautiful tone for learning in school. The qualifications of the teacher comes through their teaching skills. Greenfriends is a gem, this is one of the most amazing schools I've ever visited. I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

These are my personal observations, but if you're seriously considering sending your child to this…read moreschool, I strongly encourage you to do two things: look into Discovery Montessori in Ohio--specifically its license revocation--and speak directly with families whose children attended Green Friends in Elburn during the past two years. This school was once a truly special place. Unfortunately, that changed dramatically starting in 2023. While Lakshmi Mohan may have had a positive impact elsewhere, her involvement--along with the actions of the school board--coincided with a period of significant disruption and decline at the Elburn location. The result was a mass exodus of students by 2025. In 2023, two highly respected and beloved teachers either resigned or were dismissed mid-year. When concerned parents asked for transparency, they were met with dismissive, evasive, and at times manipulative responses from the board. While the new teachers who stepped in were wonderful, it was evident they were operating under strain--likely due to board-level dysfunction. I believe most of those teachers have since left as well. Several parents witnessed teachers being treated with extreme rudeness and condescension during board meetings. Meanwhile, board members repeatedly made commitments to parents only to later deny ever making them. Communication was marked by stonewalling and an alarming lack of accountability. The behavior of the majority of the board exemplified toxic power dynamics. If I had to sum up their attitude toward parents, it would be: (these are not direct quotes) -We never said we'd do that. Be grateful we even let you enroll your child here. We should charge you more. You're lucky to be here, and your opinions don't matter. Despite this, we are grateful for the time our family spent at the school--specifically for the wonderful teachers and fellow families we got to know. The teaching staff was truly exceptional, and we will always appreciate their dedication to our children. I don't know how many families plan to return, but it's possible that a new cohort could offer a fresh start. Still, I feel compelled to share our experience--not because I expect change (which feels unlikely), but because families deserve to know what they may be stepping into. Transparency and honesty should be the bare minimum from a school administration. Unfortunately, I don't believe this board values either, nor do I believe they take parents' concerns seriously. For further context, here's an excerpt from a June 7, 2021 article in the Akron Journal Star regarding Discovery Montessori in Ohio, where Lakshmi Mohan was named as the administrator in the article: "Over the four years of inspections, the state documented 30 infractions, including: Class sizes exceeding legal limits Unsupervised toddlers Unsafe playground equipment Hazardous substances accessible to children, including pesticide Medication administered without prescriptions Dangerous furniture setup in toddler rooms Many of these issues were noted repeatedly in prior inspections and went unaddressed." They are always going over and above to make sure everyone feels welcomed. You can tell that they all love what they are doing. I love that it isn't a huge facility with many classrooms all going on at once. There is only one class in session at at time. The backyard is amazing with a beautiful walking trail. The children go outside every day. The children are learning through play. the teachers are very experienced with helping foster a child's learning while they are playing. You will not see a worksheet here. You will not see a teacher drilling your child. You will see children learning by doing experiments, cooking, building blocks, playing board games, putting on a puppet show, pouring water into containers, creating meaningful art, etc. I highly recommend Hobson to everyone. It is truly the best first school for your child.

They took good care of my family and the other two families that had parental deaths when I attended here. The teachers were great here I learned a lot. I was scoring in the high 90th percentile sin everything on every test I took after I left here. I owe them big time for that. They challenged me. I was in town the day the church burned...I saw it all smoky and crispy. Sad, sad, sad. I had my first communion here too. My mother, two classmate's parents and my great-grandmother's funerals were here. I was an alter girl too when I was a kid. I used to run around the church after school. This is the place that put the fear of G-d in me and keeps me agnostic rather then atheist as I go through that whole "I'm an adult - know what" thing. The spiritual education I got here kept me on a fairly straight path most of my life... The new church is AMAZING, huge and endless. They tore down the rectory and the convent and now have what I think is the largest and most beautiful community faith centers I have ever seen.
