Came here once for the food bazaar that typically happens every month. The space is not super large, and it can get very hot in the summer. I came around 11am, and I was one of the first ones there. Tried the chicken satay (served on top of these pressed rice cubes) from the stand at the very front (Tuson Sate?) which was delicious and probably the best thing I tried. Got a fruit slaw from Warung Bu Marty Jogja, which was refreshing and a tiny bit spicy. Definitely a different flavor profile than what I'm used to. There were a lot of things there that I didn't recognize, and I wished that I had a larger stomach so I could try it all. Got a few of the different desserts but none of them stood out. Things add up surprisingly quickly - I think the satay was ~$8 - and to be honest, nothing really blew me away. But it was quite a unique experience and glad that I checked it out. read more

** 800th review ** I came for one of the monthly Indonesian Food Bazaars here and had a great time. To be honest, I was definitely one of the non-Indonesian people there, but that was not a problem. There were lots of interesting, yummy things to try - food that you won't find in American Indonesian restaurants, even the ones I've been to in NYC. I wish there had been more descriptions on the food items, but everyone was willing to explain what was in the food. I'd say there are minimal vegetarian items, but there are a few. This review is regarding the Food Bazaar. I was told this event is 2 times per month. Make sure to come early, the best food and drinks run out. The prices are fair, the Chicken Satay (5 and rice cubes $5) on the left at the entrance and the Fish Cakes (6 for $5) 4 or 5 stalls down on the left were the best grub of the day, but the (?) Noodle Soup ($5) at the front right was really also great. I wish I had taken some photos, if your in the area its well worth your time to pass by. read more

Regardless of all the management problems they have, let's be honest, this is the cleanest, friendliest and family oriented masjid you'all ever visit in entire NYC. Your kids are running around in the free coolest and warmest room better than your own house. The bathroom is the cleanest and always smell better than your own bathroom. The food is always free except for the food bazaar. The lecture and prayer are sunnah always. The halaqoh is great especially for the Sisters' Halaqoh on Wednesday. The hatred is always at lost, the funny thing is the hatred never win against his family or kids, in terms of being a good Muslim and going to Masjid, how come they will win against the wrong accusations all this time? So sorry for the poor soul, don't try to make the mesjid becomes your comfort shelter as you can't have it in your own house. Let Allah show you the right path. The food bazaar at Masjid Al-Hikmah is much better than most of the Queens-based Indonesian restaurants. Imagine being invited to an Indonesian potluck, where everything is homemade by cute little hijab-covered Indonesian women. With a wide array of delectable items such as fried tofu, banana leaves stuffed with spicy meat, summer-time drinks of the neon-color-variety spiked with coconut milk, more than five types of grilled meat satays, and soupy noodles and meatballs. This dream is a reality. And my point about the food being better than restaurant food is that it is homemade, relying less on thick fatty sauces and more on fresh ingredients and lighter flavors. Variety is high at the food bazaar. And while quality is hit or miss (in my humble opinion), the experience is more than made up by the intereactions with the friendly Indonesian organizers and families. I love Queens. read more

Dropped by when one of their infamous bazaars was ongoing and it was well worth it. Walked around a few times to scope out all the stands and then split into three groups to grab some goodies. Some of it was meh, some of it was great. I'd avoid the fried vegetable type things, which tended to be mush(tried from two stands). Fried in the morning or the evening before, I guess. The beef rendang at the northeastern stand, manned by all men, was delicious. The satay stand on your right as you walk in was a stand out for our group, I liked it but it didn't blow my mind(though the cubed rice was pretty cute). I wasn't a big fan of the green drink in the back with the worms which I was told repeatedly by an Indonesian internet-friend I must try, too sweet for my palate. Overall, I'd avoid the snack type foods and stick with the entrees unless you know what you're getting. I wasn't a big fan of *any* of the snacks I tried. Food stalls crammed into a parking lot, heat blasting up from the pavement, everyone cutting in line - I feel like I'm back in Jakarta! Street food is the real Indonesian food and this is the best I've had in the US (but I haven't been to Philly yet, so that could change). I agree with the reviewer above who said go for stewy entrees over fried snacks. The entrees have more herbs and spices and thus more distinctive flavors. Stuff to look out for: rendang (beef stewed in coconut milk and spices); young jackfruit (purply-brown when cooked, with a mild flavor and a texture kind of like artichoke hearts); tempeh. The table from Hardena Waroeng in Philly was the best - their sambal (chili sauce) was the real deal. read more

On certain Sundays here, you can observe Islam while eating kale curry, for just $4 per pint! The medley of turmeric, ginger, and spices sat harmoniously in the coconut milk base, as piquant as the fabulous debutantes serving the delicious dishes, which included satay chicken for $1 per skewer, three types of grilled fish, sesame-adorned rice balls (banh cam), oxtail soup, squid with greens, fried vegetables (bakwan sayur), and beef rendang. Proud parents sat in the row of about a dozen seats lined up in the middle of the lot, attending to their boisterous, drooling children. Hymns emanated from our pleased bellies, joining those of the timely azan. A kind vendor even provided free water, which I later released in the very clean bathroom, which comes with communal slippers and a foot washing station. read more

We were here for the Indonesian food bazaar. The bazaar is in the parking lot behind the mosque. It was pretty crowded when we were there. The Indonesian food here are definitely authentic. You can find the Indonesian dish here that you can't find anywhere in any Indonesian restaurant in NYC. The price were decent. Everything was less than $10. The next time they have another food bazaar, we'll most likely go back! read more

this is such an incredible and diverse community. This is a unique place in that this is perhaps the most distinct and readily identifiable Muslim house of worship that caters particularly to the beautiful Indonesian community. This is one of the few Masjid that still holds the correct Qiblah direction in North America. Majority of the Masjids changed their Qiblah direction towards North East. Actually, Qiblah direction from North America is South East, not North East. If you go to oldest Masjids is USA and Canada, they were all used to face South East, including grave yards. There is only two way Qiblah direction would be North East. First, if we change the meaning of the Qur'anic word :Shatr", which means direction. Second, if one is insane. There is a website.... thelostqiblah.com, where you can view the book "The Lost Qiblah:Vol: 1. However, anyone can challenge me, I accept the challenge. With one condition, we have to go back to the Qur'an and Sunnah injunctions. This deen has been completed in the presence of Prophet sul lul laa hu 'alihi wasul lum 1400 years ago and he clearly given us the methods of finding the direction of al Qiblah. Nothing of this Deen left for us to complete! And if you prefer science and technology, my challenge is still there. Finally got a chance to try this place when I was walking to work and saw tons of people in the backyard so I stopped by and saw all of the food stalls. There were alot of interesting things that I never saw before and everyone there were super nice and friendly. I didn't get a chance to try anything but call my friend to go out here to try it and buy things for the house for later on that night. Anyway she came down and got a little of everything and lucky that she did come because she found out that it was the last event until next spring. During the winter they serve lamb satay in the parking lot which comes with a serving of steamed rice four (which turns cake like - like turnip cake without the fixings) for $5. The satay sticks are cooked on a portable grill The food comes with a spicy/non-spicy option and you can eat in the lot or you can get it to go. They speak English so there is no language barrier. If you choose to eat in you will probably have to eat it standing up (they only have a couple of chairs and no tables). You can also get individual satay sticks for $1 or deep fried tofu with veggies for a $1. The food is served from 12:30pm-2pm on Fridays. I believe it is timed when service ends at the Mosque. The food is quite tasty and you are getting the real McCoy if you want Indonesian food. The problem is during winter the fried tofu and steamed rice flour cakes can get cold. It may be better if you arrive at 12:30pm when it starts and hopefully the food is hotter. They have a food bazzar during the summer months which offers a wider variety of food with tables and chairs. The food bazzar is definitely worth coming and would give that 5 stars. The food bazaar at the masjid has the best Indonesian street food in NYC. There's sate, gorengan, pecal and lots of sweets. There is a great community vibe and the masjid is welcoming to outsiders. read more
