My mum was visiting and had taken her on the Staten Island ferry. Since it was Zuhr time we decided to come here to read our Zuhr. The women's area is pretty big and clean. Lots of space for women. There's also a kitchen and table with chairs for people who would like to have their lunch. However there is a sign that says you shouldn't enter the masjid without a hijab for women. I do not agree with that, because I feel that Allah would prefer any Muslim woman to enter a mosque and pray rather than punish her for not having her head covered. That's my interpretation. I did not have a scarf but decided to come up anyway because most mosques have scarves and cover ups for people like me and sure enough they did. That sign wasn't going to stop me from praying and it shouldn't stop anyone else either! So even if you do not have a hijab, please come up to the 4th floor anyway because they have scarves up here! It's also a really good place for some peace and quiet..

Our prayer floor is the third 3rd floor . There is 5 floors for praying The men have 4 floors. All signs clearly written at all the entrances that the third floor is the sisters floor. Me and another woman, arrived at around 1250 pm Friday to prepare for jumah. We put our shoes in the cubby , we put our bags down in the front area of the floor and started praying and reading . All of the sudden two men came to us in front of us and told us to leave and pointed to the back of our floor The way in the back, approx 10x10 space was curtain off for us women. I asked the women, if this is the women's floor , they said yes. But men keep coming in. Finally the adhan started and to save our salah we went into the small space. It was a total of 28 beautiful sisters stuck in this small hot space. We didn't have any room . After the service, I went to speak to the Imam about the situation we were rudely interrupted, many times, the imam didn't care at all about the situation or about the women who worship here. His answer to me was when I go to haj it's more crowded . I tried to explain that we are professional women and we make money we donate and work in Manhattan we deserve to be treated better and have a place to pray without being pushed around by men. This obese imam is not a good Imam for women, he talks the talk but does not walk the walk. Women deserve better . I will never come here again.

An Absolutely Beautiful and Welcoming Experience!…read more The second part of the funeral was prayers at The Islamic Cultural Center of New York. The Islamic cultural center is a magnificent landmark and a truly special place. From the moment I entered the grounds there was nothing but peace. The beautiful Mosque is grand, modernist architecture on Third Avenue, you know you are visiting a landmark of spiritual and cultural significance. It is one of the city's largest mosques and serves not only as a place of worship for the Muslim community. Stepping inside, the vast, light-filled prayer hall with its soaring dome is breathtakingly peaceful. Upon entering the prayer room, shoes are not permitted. The ladies are on one side, and the men are on the other. Which I actually like because it was nice to have a place wherein ladies can speak and pray amongst themselves. Even though we were there for final prayers for the family matriarch. We were all at peace. The space is immaculately clean and well-organized, with a palpable sense of calm that is perfect for prayer and reflection. The staff and regular attendees are exceptionally friendly and welcoming to newcomers, including non-Muslim visitors like myself. The center also offers a wide range of educational programs and events, including weekly classes and forums, demonstrating its commitment to being a true cultural center, not just a mosque. Whether you are seeking a place to pray, to learn more about Islam, or simply to admire the unique and beautiful architecture, the ICCNY is a phenomenal place. This center is a credit to the city and a shining example of how a place of worship can also be a vital, welcoming community resource. It's a must-visit.

Sisters area was tiny, not very clean, with one bathroom that smelled bad and didn't have a mirror (an extra challenge when you are trying to re wrap a silk hijab). But the most troubling part was that, despite having multiple signs in the sisters area that state "Brothers are not allowed to sit or sleep in the sisters area," I walked in to find a brother sitting there. He was slow to leave, but I figured it was an exception and didn't react seeing that he was leaving. Then once the adhan was called and I was starting salat, he walks back through the curtain to behind me, grabs a bag, and goes back to the men's side. Then someone else tries to walk in through the partition (I'm just seeing feet at this point), sees I'm there and goes back, then when I was doing my sunnah another guy walks all the way through to the back door. I really don't have an issue with mixed gender/non-partitioned prayer, though I prefer and appreciate having separate spaces. What I do have an issue with are hypocrisy and double standards. Imagine if the sisters treated the brothers' area so casually! I was the lone sister there--one came after we started and left while I was making dua (including for the masjid and this situation). I know sisters don't often come in numbers and it does to some extent justify dedicating less masjid space to us, but I think this can become a vicious circle and self-fulfilling prophesy if the space that is there )and the brothers' decisions and actions) do nothing more than discourage and alienate us. My husband came out saying the place was great and it had some of the best bathroom/wudu facilities he's ever seen. Then I told him about me experience. He said I should have said something directly to these brothers, but understood when I explained that I had already started praying. So this is my way of saying something. May Allah swt guide us all in navigating these issues in our ummah.

We were surprised by the sermon, which should have been based on the Bible and not on politics. The whole time they tried to draw an analogy between Jesus and the immigrants entering our country. I was deeply uncomfortable with this. I have been a Christian since birth and am knowledgeable about the word of God. They should never compare the problems of immigrants, especially illegal immigrants, with Christ, never. By the way, I have an idea for this church: If they like immigrants so much, why don't they open their doors to them? I didn't see any immigrants at the service. Hypocrisy should have no place in the house of God.
