Their grounds are well maintained and gorgeous with plants, flowers, and water features. They have a Welcome Center that explains the history and symbolism to truly appreciate everything this temple has to offer. Allow me to inform you that The Nation of Islam is NOT a regular Muslim/Islam Organization. It was designed specifically for the Black Americans who descended from slavery in North America . It specifically addresses the issues of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Slave Disorder) due to 400 years of Slavery abuse, and continued social injustice in America. There is virtually nothing in the Original Nation of Islam teachings that is in line with the usual Middle Eastern Islamic Teachings. The disciplines taught even down to the diet are different. For example: Middle eastern Muslims smoke.. Nation of Islam members are not allowed to indulge in any intoxicants, whatsoever, including tobacco. Another example is in usual Islam a man can take up to four wives. However, Members of The Nation of Islam cannot marry more than one woman. Also, Members of the Nation of Islam are also forbidden to carry guns. Even the dress code is unique and members of the Nation of Islam can usually be identified by their uniforms, which include a Bow Tie for men and specific Headpieces for the women.

This is the masjid that I grew up with, so of course, I may be biased…read more Beautiful masjid with a wonderful and ample area for women to pray upstairs. There's also area near the back of the women's area in case you aren't praying. Furthermore, for women with young children, there is a small room for women to take their children there and pray so as to not disturb others in the larger prayer area. I attended Sunday School here, and I have to say that experience really shaped my relationship with the religion as I grew older. Furthermore, IFS has grown more social media aware recently, and has started sending listhost emails and posting on Facebook their many events. They've started catering to the community in other ways as well, with sports programs for younger kids to exercise classes for older women. There are also free lectures that are open to the public after evening and night prayers. Despite how wonderful this masjid is, there is certainly room for improvement in sha Allah, that can be easily attained. Firstly, the bathrooms are almost always a mess unfortunately. Either the floors are all watery, or there isn't enough soap, there is always something that makes me uncomfortable using the bathrooms here. Secondly, the social groups here can be somewhat clique-y, making it difficult (especially for older women) to feel like they are a part of the community.
