Good authentic take away. Highly recommend this place when you're on the go. Service is mediocre. Overall good value for money.

Five of us came here for dinner and two of us came early and they came by and served us water while we waited for the rest of our party. 3 of us ordered the Dhaba Special with butter chicken, lamb korma, and the chicken jalfrezi while the other two ladies ordered the chicken tikka masala and the fish madras. We all asked for spicy and the only one that was slightly spicy was the lamb korma which ended up being my favorite! With the Dhaba Special ($30 with minimum 2 people), you will also receive a small serving of chicken tikka and a vegetable spring roll as well as raita with several dips before your main comes. Come hungry because we already starting to get filled up but we persevered. The waitress was nice and asked us if we were ready for our mains before bringing them out. They brought out our rice in adorable bowl/cup. The curry was delicious, especially the lamb. Flavors were excellent with the almonds and spice. The butter chicken was a little sweet and then the chicken jalfrezi came with onions and capsicum was very tasty. The naan wasn't my favorite. It wasn't a little too thin for my taste. I am spoiled by traveling to India and living in Japan (yes, Japan has great Indian food!!). We were stuffed and couldn't finish all our food. Service was pretty nice. It was a bit cold and the door kept being left open by departing customers. After my friend got up from her seat and closed it five times, they started making sure the door stayed closed. They took all our food off our plate and didn't ask us if we wanted to take any home. You can BYO Wine for a $5 (per bottle) corkage fee. Great location in West End and would definitely go back.

However, I have been to many Indian restaurants in other parts of the world, including the area of London famous for Indian food, so I believe my opinion can be trusted. And my opinion is that this is a wonderful restaurant with delicious food, a great atmosphere and wonderful service. I went with one of my friends who only likes Butter Chicken, so that is what we had, along with Naan Bread. Butter Chicken is always fantastic, and it was in this instance as well. It was a very enjoyable evening; I really have only good things to say about this place. The meals are moderately priced, around $20 for a dish. They offer excellently valued lunch specials so if you're lucky enough to be able to escape the office for a relaxed midday break, this is a great place to go.

It seems a popular business model. Envision the rating as three stars for the restaurant and four for the store. First: the store. It is not as large as a full grocery store, but there are two separate rooms and a wide variety of foods. There are plenty of packaged foods and spices and freezer items, but also some chaat type items from the restaurant, and a few fresh vegetables (notably including okra, which is a bit hard to find). It isn't hard to find something to buy. The restaurant is up a set of stairs. One could (and I did) shop at the store without even noticing the restaurant entrance; it is to the left upon walking in. It is a pretty basic fast food place. The chole bhatura (chickpeas and fried bread) was satisfying. The bread had some nice herbs in it, but the chickpeas weren't quite as nuanced in flavor as the best iterations of this dish I've had. The samosa was quite large, but mostly potatoes and a tad salty for my taste. The menu wasn't huge, and I wasn't left with a burning desire to try it all. Also, I found it odd that the place is named "mirchh masala", but they don't actually have any menu items with stuffed or fried chili peppers (i.e. mirch), as some Indian places do. However, I may very well continue to come back for more groceries. Also, quick note: they do take cards, for both of their businesses.

Of the three facets, I have thusfar stuck with their chaat (fast food) items. Their menu is appealing and getting something substantive, cheap, and fast is all well and good. The dishes I've ordered have been appealing in their variety of flavors, but not fresh and often cold. Of them the aloo tikki chaat (fried mashed potatoes with an alluring combination of chickpeas and garnishes on top) was the best. I couldn't say that the food here was better than any of the other numerous grocery/restaurant Indian places I've found in Brisbane. They've also had some issues ranging from running out of menu items to struggling with card payments that aren't dealbreakers but aren't helping my impression of them either. Having not found the absolute great Indian restaurant anywhere in Australia, I may come back here again, but I wouldn't make any great effort.

We browsed their takeaway menu and called to order at 11:45am (time is of the essence when you're on a time limit!) only to be told the kitchen didn't open until midday. We suggested they could take the order and give it to the kitchen and we would come to pick up once it was done, but that seemed all too complicated. So we piled into the car and ordered in person. The restaurant sits one floor above a bustling Indian food market. Walking through the downstairs section everything looked very authentic - this is coming from someone who's never been to India mind you - but it all looked fresh and absolutely delicious! The restaurant itself is a vast expanse of dark stained timber and silk tableware. It reminds me of the 1990's and felt very clean and polished. They have a huge well-stocked bar (I saw 5 different bottles of gin, and being an avid gin-drinker I was very impressed). We ordered lunch specials and waited for approximately 20 minutes for the meals. When we were back at the office seated in our lunchroom there were many positive comments. "The best curry I've had in ages" one person said, and another (originally from the UK) said it "tastes like the awesome curries we get back in England". I was extremely impressed with the soft, pillowy rice and creamy succulent curries. They were devoid of excess oil and had a lovely complexity to them. The meats were perfectly cooked and there was no dryness. Also the lunch servings are very generous - although the packaging leaves something to be desired. All in all for under $13 the meals were delicious. We will definitely be going back, but probably only on days we can afford to take slightly longer than our regulated lunch hour.

When we were planning our Brisbane, Australia trip, my dad read somewhere that there is a large Indian population in Brisbane so the food there is authentic and very tasty. Of course, we are always down for a good Indian meal so we walked just a few blocks from the Queen Street Mall to Indian Mehfil and got ready to indulge. We arrived there a little after 5:30pm but because it's almost winter in the southern hemisphere the sun had already set and it felt much later. The restaurant looked much fancier than we were dressed but being the hungry folks we were, we didn't let that deter us. After being greeted by the very friendly staff we found our table and looked at the menu. Of course there was quite a bit of curries to choose from and being as hungry as we were we wanted to try everything. In the end we settled on the butter chicken with a side of garlic and cheese naan bread and the lamb vindaloo (they also had a kids' menu and our less adventurous girls chose the chicken strips). You know it's going to be a good meal when upon taking our order, the waiter asks, "How hot do you want it? Medium, hot, or Indian hot?" We wisely chose medium which offered more than enough kick for us. The food came out fairly quickly and the portions were very generous. In fact, the waiter advised us that one order was probably enough to share with two people and he was very correct. Even the kids meal was big enough for both girls. Overall, it was a very, very good meal. The food was very hearty and very well seasoned. Our lamb vindaloo had large chucks of tender lamb and I almost couldn't eat all of it (almost). And the butter chicken sauce was so good you could have just poured it over the rice and that would have been plenty. The prices were very good considering the exchange rate and the fact that you could share an entree. If I'm ever in Brisbane again, this place is definitely on my list of places to eat.

However, they have everything they need to be a booming success. The fit out is beautiful, much more glamorous than your standard Indian restaurant, the service is friendly and the beer list is very impressive. But where Indian Mehfil really shines is the food! Delectable curries and amazing flavours that left us full to bursting, and still coming back for more. Personal highlights were the eggplant curry and butter chicken, with special mention to the keema naan. Indian Mehfil may struggle to find its customers initially. But once found, I'm certain they'll keep returning. As will I.
