Mas Katy Center - Mosques Near Me - Houston, Texas

Isee there is a lot of mixed reviews of this masjid about mostly the women section which i can't really speak upon. But what i can speak upon is the men's section. I was raised at this masjid and seen it grow from the small little like home (now a daycare) to now a huge well ran beautiful masjid. Especially during ramadan the masjid feels so alive and the youth all come together. This Masjid is beautiful, but the last time I attended Friday prayer a few months ago I was told to leave the beautiful prayer room by a rather rude lady because I had my quiet infant with me (she grabbed my baby's car seat and started walking away with it to get me out). I was lead to a dirty unkept classroom with broken desks and nasty carpet. I had to watch the imam on a tv screen instead of seeing and hearing him give khutba and lead prayer from the balcony in the main prayer room. It was apparent that women with children were not allowed to enjoy the nicer amenities of this Masjid. I will not be returning. read more

Salam, it is April 29th 2022, the masjid is so full up stairs in the woman's area- which is a good thing right? But It feels as if we are praying in a sauna. There's so many people and it is so hot upstairs. I'm pretty sure one of the sisters collapsed during Taraweeh prayer from how hot it is. There is no air circulation and I suggest the masjid installs ceiling fans at least in the sisters area and more ground fans. Thank you read more

This is a beautiful masjid, there's two floors for the womens prayer hall, however the bathroom to make Wudu smells so terrible, honestly it's a foul stench and a masjid deserve better to have cleaner bathrooms for the women read more

Two Fridays ago, during the khutbah (sermon) of the Jumma (congregational) prayer at MAS Katy, a woman and police officer were telling women with babies and toddlers to leave the main women's prayer hall and move to the "children's room", a space down the hall. The babies and children were making no noise and causing no disturbances. The woman and police officer continued to walk up and down the rows evicting these women and their children up until the prayer officially started. Again, none of these children were making any noise. I wrote an email to MAS Katy using their official website, saying that the woman and police officer were abusing their power by removing women and children who were not causing any problems. By doing so, they were discouraging families from coming to the masjid, and I hoped this issue could be addressed and was looking forward to their response. They did not respond to my email. Today, during the khutbah of the Jumma prayer, another woman, different from two weeks ago and possibly a teacher at the adjoining Islamic school, told a young mother with 3 or 4 young kids that she had to leave the main prayer hall. The young mother refused, saying her children were not causing any problems or making any noise. She had used the "children's room" before; the air conditioning of this room is broken, if actually present, which is dangerous in the Houston summer heat, and has various hazards like metal chairs, etc. so she cannot leave her children in the room alone. The young mother has been coming to this masjid since its opening, volunteers regularly, and was now being told she and her behaving children could not sit in the prayer room. The woman telling her to leave told her this was a "masjid rule." The mother asked her, "Where am I supposed to go if I cannot use the main prayer room or the children's room?" The woman responded: "You can leave." I was sitting next to this while it was taking place, and I turned around and asked the teacher why exactly the mother and children needed to leave if they were behaving appropriately. The teacher asked me if I had written the email from two weeks ago. I said yes. She told me I was rude and arrogant and just because I went to Rice University I thought I was a big deal. I told her I didn't think writing an email to the masjid I have been attending for over a decade, bringing up a concern that affects multiple people, was rude and arrogant, and I again asked her why the mother had to leave. The teacher did not at any point answer my question and left. The khutbah and prayer continued as normal, and there were no disturbances from any of children present, including those of the young mother I have mentioned. I am sure this does not need to be said, but regardless I will mention that there were multiple witnesses on both Fridays. I think any person with some semblance of common sense can understand why this situation is completely unacceptable. MAS Katy asks for thousands of dollars in donations every week for the maintenance of the masjid, improvements, programs for children, and then kicks out mothers and their children from prayers. MAS Katy fervently preaches unity of the ummah, the Muslim community, and then their teachers attack the characters of other masjid-goers for wanting to see a change. MAS Katy wants to see their congregation grow, and then refuses to equally and fairly accommodate all members. Ladies and gentlemen, this is hypocrisy and abuse of power at its finest. I have a few questions for MAS Katy that I, along with many others, would like to know the answers to. First, what gives one individual the authority to remove other civil individuals from a religious congregation at MAS Katy? Is it a minimum donation of $1000? Is it membership in the elite management of the masjid that is supposedly welcoming of all people? Second, if there actually is a "masjid rule" that requires women with children to sit separately (or children to be kept separate from their mothers), why is that room not kept in the exact same condition as the main prayer room for men and the main prayer room for women (it is definitely not for a lack of funds)? Third, if you encourage emails on your website, why do you not respond to them and instead verbally and publicly attack the people who send them (instead of responding in any way to the actual problem)? After the prayer today, I went back to shake the young mother's hand and wish her well. She smiled and did the same. MAS Katy, that is what unity is. That is what inclusion is.
