Dr Buchness is one of those rare NYC dermatologists that actually treats skin diseases as well as doing beautiful cosmetic work. I followed her when she left her old group practice in the West Village and set up this lovely office in SoHo. She has treated me for 6 years for psoriasis and melanoma. As a melanoma survivor, I am clear that Dr Buchness saved my life. She knew exactly what that odd black mark was, and sadly I know too many people who have died of melanoma because their doctor was less educated or careful. The office also sells the superb NIA24 products for sunscreen, and a range of skin serums that are excellent. Dr B's colleague Susan Hirsch is also outstanding and I can't recommend the aesthetician Debbie highly enough. The whole staff are caring and friendly. Susan Hirsch has been my dermatologist for a few years now after a long search in NYC for a good one. She's sweet and fun and doesn't make you feel crazy when you come into her office with tons of questions about every spot on your skin. She is very thorough, and takes pictures of any moles that I have so that we can track their changes. She caught one two years ago that was an evolving melanoma. Can't thank her enough for that! She is pretty easy to get an appointment with, and I usually only wait 15 minutes max to see her. Best of all, she has good recommendations of over the counter treatments and isn't constantly trying to write you a prescription for things you don't need. read more

While this place is not a scam it is about as bad as you can get from a legitimate practice. Mary Buchness is a careless Dr. who obviously only thinks about one thing and that is getting paid. After going seeing her over 7 times (every to weeks) she was still not able to comment on any of my progress (positive or otherwise). She only once took even the most rudimentary of historical measurements to track progress and on my last visit when asked "do you see any progress" she responded with "I do a million of these a day there is no way I can't remember." I think its time she hangs up her hat and stop doing the bare minimum to collect her paychecks. Also, expect at least a 30 min wait EVEYR TIME even when you arrive early. read more

I've seen Susan Hirsch several times for acne. I cannot say I trust her, as she comes off as a little flighty. I've never been seen by Dr. Buchness. My biggest peeve is there is always a long wait when you call...I'm currently on hold for 9 minutes, which prompts this review. I usually wait 20 minutes to be seen in the office, which is ok. The doctor was great. The office policy and handling is awful. Went for a treatment that was two for one and missed the second "free" because it had to be within a month. They never told me this. They just said I'd like to see you in a month. Not that I would lose the second treatment if I didn't come in within that time frame. Also, they charge you $150 to make the appointment, in case you don't show up. But if you do they still charge you and you have to wait for a refund check in the mail. So you still lose. Lastly, had an appointment, called to say I was running a bit late to get a response that the office was closed. I do not recommend based on all of this. read more

As a life-long sufferer of pretty bad hyperhidrosis I was referred to Dr. Buchness after trying all other options over the past 30 years (Drysol, pills, iontophoresis, BOTOX!) - not of it worked. Interestingly, before trying a new strain of Botox she recommended I try Glycopyrrolate one last time, but this time to try it twice a day. No one is more shocked or stoked than me that it appears to be working, and its only due to the increased dosage! I wish I had met Dr Buchness and her awesome staff when I was 13 - it would have made my life so much less anxious. Her and her staff are pleasant, listen, and don't rush you. Dr Buchness is one of the BEST doctors I've encountered in New York .. Of any kind! She is extremely knowledgeable and surefooted in her practice, I am always at ease whenever the slightest problem arises. Case in point: bizarre undergrown pimple from hell the size of Olympus Mons* in my cheek, and she deftly deflated it, got me the antibiotics I needed to trim the infection, and sent me on my way to France for vacation without a picture-destroying monstrosity everywhere I went. And that's only the most recent thing.. I've been seeing her the last 7 years and ALWAYS a great experience. I have no clue what the negative reviews on here are about, other than maybe betraying the authors own bad experiences with life in general. It's a long wait--it's true. I usually went for acne and had to wait half an hour, esp. if I made appointments for lunch hour or after. The office also closed on Fridays, which I found frustrating. Dr. Buchness is competent and willing to listen--no nonsense. If I asked to try a prescription, she'd listen, and as my skin changed between college and now, she gave good advice. Her PA Ashley Stonewater, I suspect, kinda got sick of me and it took going to another dermatologist to get some clarity on how to deal with allergies to antibiotics I'd been on. I found that frustrating. One thing I appreciated about Ashley is that when I had a horrible student insurance plan she was willing to manually date prescriptions as being written for the next day so that I wouldn't have to make three appointments in a single week. The medical assistants, Nadia and Maribelle, were always kind. I've been to three derms' offices for acne in NY, and I'd say this was about the middle. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!! Dr. Buchness was actually very nice, professional, and more than competent for my visit. The problem is the accounting staff. I paid my responsibility during the original visit in June 2014, and they collected what they could from my insurance. Imagine my surprise when their office sent me another bill for $8.51 in October 2016! On principal, I called multiple times to request an explanation and/or waive this as a nuisance. There office refused to returned phone calls or follow up, and now they sent a follow up in February 2017 with another $35 processing fee tacked on. Absolutely horrible, greedy, and not trust worthy. There are ethical dermatologist offices out there. Find one of those and use them instead. read more

As I wrote when she was at Romano's practise, Susan Hirsch was fabulous, "sweet as a honeybee," incredibly knowledgeable yet personable. Not afraid either to tell you that your mystery rash may just be attributed to "rough sex!" She is also quite big on photographing skin problems to keep in your records. If she's unsure about anything, she'll call Dr Buchness into the room for a second opinion. The eponymous grande dame of Dermatology has quite a wait list, but from my brief interactions with her, the reputation is quite deserved: unflinching in her assessments, cool yet polite. Terrible experience. I went here because a friend told me that he liked her. I got to the office and waited 30 minutes in the noisy and crowded waiting room before I even got taken to an examination room. In this room two young girls gave me 4 more forms to fill out (I filled out 4 forms when I arrived), asked me a ton of questions, and took about 10 close-ups of my face. Who are these girls? Where is the doctor??? Finally after 10 minutes of interrogating me, they left me alone in the room... where I waited for 20 more minutes before I packed up my belongings and left the office. I was there over an hour and never even met the doctor. Does she even exist? What a complete waste of my time!!!! If you like seeing a doctor in a factory, I highly recommend this place. read more

i saw Susan. it was easy to make a same day appointment. but had to wait for 35min-40mins to see her even after the appointment. she seems nice and experienced. I only had sun allergy problem it was a short visit for some prescribed lotion to heal.. she recommend to take over the counter allergy medicine for sun allergy as well - which i thought it was interesting. For me, Dr. Buchness has been great - and has saved me quite literally not once but TWICE after urgent care doctors misdiagnosed and mis-prescribed a problem. Not only did she immediately know what was going on in both cases, she took a lot of time with me and gave me options for care. The latest issue could have gotten really serious if I'd waited any longer, and two doctors I'd seen before her had literally shrugged their shoulders and told me to wait it out. I also appreciate that her office was able to fit me in immediately (several times) when I've had sudden or alarming symptoms. Yeah, they need to take better security measures for patients' data, which I assume they've done now, but in terms of the quality of care - including the nurses, who are great and kind - I'm completely satisfied with this practice. read more

I've been going to Dr. Buchness's for at least 5-7 years now, since she was in the Village, and I have never been disappointed. Both she and the other dermatologist in her office, Susan Hirsch, are fantastic. Between the two women, Dr. Buchness is calmer, more established and has a more serious composed manner, while Susan has a very sweet and vibrant personality. Both take their time, are patient and polite, and have given me excellent care. I've been dealing with light to moderate acne for a long time and Dr. buchness and her staff keep it under control. Susan is soooo easy to talk to, and makes the appointments fun. And the aesthetician Debbie is a gem! She is conservative in her approach so you feel safe in her care. She is so knowledgable, and really goes above and beyond explaining what's best for your skin care. I've had some facials with her, and now am embarking on a set of chemical peels. I am in great hands! The offices are in a great location in Soho, with a kinda funky upscale vibe. It's a welcoming and airy space with nice receptionists. I have been seeing Susan Hirsch, PA for about 2 years and I have raved about her to all of my friends. I have gotten Botox from Susan about four times and I plan to return for a fifth. I was really worried about having a frozen forehead because I like some movement - Susan totally got me. She has done a fantastic job each and every time. I never feel nervous in her office, nor do I feel rushed through the procedure. Susan has also helped me with other things - mole removal, laser hair treatments and general derm questions (like that day I thought my hair was falling out). Then she asked me to get dressed (in front of her) and talked to me for about 2 MN. everything looked good and the consultation was over. I was in shock! So not professional! So rude! Actual appointment was not bad but talk about horrible front desk and management of the office. I went for an appointment and left license and insurance card when I called a nasty lady responded we do not have it and cut me off. 3 weeks later I received a phone call saying they had it so I went back to get it. Another month later I received a bill saying I needed a referral and advised that a referral was not asked of me at the time of the appointment...receptionist advised she would inquire with an office manager after attempting to contact them for 2 weeks they said there was nothing they could do and wound up paying 15 min appt=$225 bill even tho I have insurance. I was underwhelmed with my experience with Dr. Buchness and my treatment. Her bedside manner was where my appointment became problematic. Firstly she was 30 min late. What New Yorker has time for that? Then when she came in she was super casual with me. You're 30 min late, please show some urgency here.
